What type of material is the gasket made out of? Curious before ordering because depending on the type of material the oil could possibly soak through in a sense. Seen a couple random copies on eBay made from several different material ranging from what appeared cardboard to one made out of nitrile or a composite of the two. Not sure if you’d or have tried try a “ rubber” type gasket as this would eliminate the use for rtv.

I use Felpro. Mine was the first then the Chinese copied it. I think they use cardboard and fold the gasket up. Several people have bought the Chinese version only to buy mine later on.

I work on Honda engines and everything on the engine is RTV silicone sealed. Leaks are NOT common. You can even start the engine a few hours after completing the assembly. All you do is scrape off all the old gasket material, hit the surfaces with some brakleen and wipe down and then good to go. This Ford TSB has you doing all sorts of weird stuff trying to get a sealed interface....and now a guy in his garage inventing gaskets and sealing techniques trying to solve the issue! I think I will just go with the all-aluminum Ford oil pan and not deal with this. This is crazy. But I hope your solution worked for you!
@Raydarman1

The 3.5 has an aluminum pan replacement not the 2.7. Ford has developed a new plastic pan with an oring but you also have to replace the valve covers which costs more money. Most DIYers are just cleaning up their old pans and using a real gasket. When I started this years ago there was no fix at all and Ford had that crazy TSB. Today while Ford has a fix it’s expensive. Now the Chinese are copying my gasket and using cardboard not Felpro. People still buy my gasket with positive results so it’s helping people which is great. I also include a 2 page set of instructions. Been working on cars 50 years now.

I’ve got a 2013 F150 but my friend has the 2015. When he told me he had a plastic oil pan I I couldn’t believe it. This is complete bullshit. Ford like everything else in this country has turned to shit. Maybe if they didn’t put so much damn money into these worthless electric vehicles, we’d get a quality product. This oil pan issue should NEVER been a problem. I usually buy a new truck every 10 years or so. The ‘24 f150 is $59k? For what? A chance to replace plastic crap that should be made out of steel? I am done with ford.

For the folks wanting to do it but can't get a new pan. I said screw it and pulled my old one off and re sealed it. 2 weeks so far so good. I used the gasket as well as the permatex. As long as you don't destroy your old pan getting it off, it should be fine to re use it. The big thing here is making sure both the block surface and the pan surface are CLEAN. When you think it's clean, clean it again with brake cleaner. I did not use the ford surface prep wipes. You have to take your time with this job. If you do a half way job to get it done in a hurry, you will probably run into issues again. I did have to use a razor blade to make some of the bolt holes on this gasket a little bigger because they didn't line up perfectly, but not a big deal. I wish I would've tackled this job sooner instead of trying to wait for pans to come available.

Regardless what you do (even adding a gasket), this oil pan could still be subject to leaks. The oil pan is injection molded plastic and has a high coefficient of thermal expansion, relative to the aluminum it is adhered to. That means these two dissimilar surfaces will be slowly moving in a scrubbing motion (shear force) everytime the oil heats or cools, and even when it's not running, changes in temperature will do it too. The RTV is the best choice because it flexes, but there is likely 30 inches of sealed surface and although the oil pan isn't pressurized per se, it does experience some pressure (positive and negative) depending on starting or running. All this adds up to a torture test environment for that seal area. There is no fool proof solution for that plastic oil pan, when mated up to an aluminum surface. In 2019, Ford went to a cast-in-place high temperature o-ring looking gasket. This type of gasket does allow slippage and was probably the best solution to this otherwise flawed oil pan design.
@Raydarman1
@Raydarman1 2 года назад
Mine still isn’t leaking. I’ve sold 100’s of these no leaks. That gasketed oil pan doesn’t work for 2015 to 2017 year it will blow your motor according to the TSB. The gasket provides way more surface area than just the single RTV bead per the TSB.

@@Raydarman1 Ok, I was aware that that o-ring design wasn't for the 2015 - 2017, I was just saying that I believed they went in the right direction. Our conversations have helped me think through this more completely, which I appreciate. My job these days includes designing plastic injection molded parts and although I'm no plastics expert, I wouldn't be surprised if the main issue with the RTV gasket is adhesion to the plastic pan (not the aluminum). It wouldn't be uncommon for the part to still have some mold release agent on it (and permeated into it). When my new pan gets here, I'll look at that very carefully. I'll certainly clean the plastic surface, but it might also break the surface of the plastic flange with a light sanding. If my absolute best effort doesn't work the first time, I'll try using a gasket. Are you still selling them? The eBay link didn't work the couple times I've tried it.
