Very informative video! I have to say that SoB is a "lifestyle" game and is certainly designed to be played for years in extensive campaigns. The few first adventures are certainly very hard and they are not meant to be won 100%, as players can decide to leave the dungeon at any time until they gradually grow stronger. There is a TON of extra content to buy, with the "full" game currently reaching 6.000 cards (not counting the upcoming Lost Tombs / Hell Train kickstarter). There are also two amazing "hexcrawl" player-created campaigns (Western and Japanese) in Boargame Geek that completely transform the game to an almost rpg experience.

Lifestyle game! That's one way to put it. Money eating, time consuming, DIY gaming is another. lol It does seem to be a game that gets better the more you invest in it. I am hoping that it leads me down the road of RPGing it with my family. I am starting to enjoy it but holding in the reins on getting more for now. I take it that you have a lot of SoB. What are your favourite expansions/rules you have added?

@@BarryDoubletBoardGames I started with Forbidden Fortress and Swamps 1,5 year ago, hoping to make a small versaitle set, but right now I have almost all content except some out-of-print stuff! (all bought in retail, unfortunately, I didn't catch the kickstarters).. I don't play much right now, but, being mostly a miniature painter, I add various stuff from other mini companies and HeroForge and much scatter terrain. I believe someone like me can have this game as a hobby without even playing at all, if that makes any sense..!

The cost of the game shouldn't be indicative of whether the miniatures require assembly. High quality miniatures simply require assembly. There a significant difference between the miniature quality of a CMON game and Warhammer Quest. The Warhammer Quest game is also going to cost more. Part of that is due to the miniature quality. However, the problem with Shadows of Brimstone is that the miniatures aren't any better than the single-mold soft plastic miniatures in most modern board games. It's a shame the revised edition didn't revise the miniatures as well. But, I don't think the game is popular enough to have a budget that'd change the production line in that way. As far as your miniatures specifically, buy some Tamiya extra thin plastic cement. Run the brush along the joins so that the cement slips between the cracks. The cement will melt the plastic and fuse the two parts together. You'll no longer have wobbly miniatures that fall apart. About the only thing you'll want to avoid with the plastic cement is holding parts that have the glue on them. If you do, you'll melt your fingerprints into the plastic. But, if you take your time, the glue dries fairly quickly. Overall though, Shadows of Brimstone is a quirky, sandbox game. They provide a lot of content and components to homebrew some of it. My biggest gripe with the game is that I wish all equipment and player abilities had a card. It'd be nice to just have a character tableau instead of having to write everything down.
@BarryDoubletBoardGames
@BarryDoubletBoardGames Месяц назад
Thanks for the advice. I will try the plastic cement. As you say, it is a shame about the subpar production. I think this is why I am mainly unhappy with the price to quality ratio and people should be aware that you are not getting a Oathsworn or Batman GCC for the price you pay. FFG are a small publisher producing titles that have cult followings and it's great to see that it's still going, tapping into a niche. Reminds me of D&D =P
@PiterMorbid

They did revise the miniatures on the revised editions. All of them I think. Especially the hero miniatures. The Harbinger, for example, didn't have the eggs on the base that it now has. As for the skills and town items, you can find those online ready to print and cut. I have cards for everything: town items, mutations, skills, etc.

Thanks for this nice review. I just got my game 5 days ago and played the introduction scenario and the first scenario from Dadachaem’s awakening. I haven’t played the 7th Continent and from what I know from me playing video games and how you’re comparing this I think the 7th Citadel is the perfect place for me and 7th Continent is less of what I’d like. My first thought was that this game would be slightly similar to other story-driven games like Gloom-/Frosthaven. However, my first impression of the 7th Citadel is that I love it more. Gloom-/Frosthaven do have a nice story but in the end most of the gameplay is just a monster slaying puzzle tied together with bits and pieces of an overarching storyline that you can barely feel during scenarios. Don’t get me wrong, I play these games with my wife and a friend of ours and we love it. The 7th Citadel (which I play solo) is a lot of story during every step you take and the story unfolds slowly the further you get into a scenario. There’s not just monsters but many other challenges to overcome adding a lot of variety. Just yesterday evening I wanted to start the first scenario of Dadachaem’s awakening. I only wanted to check out the start, maybe play half an hour or so, leave the game on the table, and continue the next morning. Every single step I took I discovered new things and every time I was like: “I’m just going to see what’s going on over here. Now I’m just going to see what’s in the mist and explore the terrain tile later. Well, I could go onto the terrain tile and check out that number there before I stop for the night. Just one more card.” And suddenly I had spend and hour and a half (maybe even two) and the scenario was over and I had so much fun (at the cost of my sleeping time).

You died? I thought it was supposed to eliminate the die and retry repetition from 7th continent?
@BarryDoubletBoardGames
@BarryDoubletBoardGames 5 месяцев назад
It's doesn't happen as often as in the 7th Continent (which is a lot due to trial and error and the groundhog day experience it is). If you play it like the 7th Continent (which I did the first time) you can run out of life points and die. If you make a bad decision in the story, like not look after your health or colony, you can die. And If you choose to pick a fight with someone that you should have avoided (and there are clues in the story) you can die. You can play and survive many chapter of the story, building and developing everything and not die. But you need to play carefully. If there is no threat or fear of dying or losing the game, you wont play strategically. This is what keeps it exciting. You want to tell stories of how you just managed to escape capture and get back to the citadel. Or finding this really cool item that made it easy to kill this big bad boss. If the game is too easy, the only thing you can say is "this game is too easy." This is a choose your own adventure game. There will be a paragraph somewhere saying "your adventure end here." If that is something you do not like, don't get this game.
@Deltium5683
@Deltium5683 6 месяцев назад
Hi - thanks for the good first impressions. How do you view this in contrast to 7th Continent? Also, how do you view the replay ability?
@BarryDoubletBoardGames
@BarryDoubletBoardGames 6 месяцев назад
Good questions. Deltium Video game comparison. Continent = Elden Ring. Citadel = Skyrim. (that's if you are into video games) This is more a "choose your own adventure" book than the Continent. With paths laid out for you and you can follow them if you want unlike the Continents sandbox world. More story driven than trying to find your story in the Continent. You'll be going back to a camp and building it up, leveling up to. Things that are not in the Continent. And of course, it is a little more refined mechanically. Too early for me to tell how replayable it is. There may come a point where I get fed up of having to play the starting scenario, just so I can 1 of the 3 stories (2 in base game, 1 expansion). I never could keep replayed a Fighting Fantasy adventure after dying many time and would always more on to a different book (luck there are 50+ of them).The Continent has always been replayable due to the amount of curses and content. Staring in different locations and having to do different things. I am never bored playing that. There is a lot of content in this game too. Thing you do and say effect the world. Some things I have seen but there is so much that I haven't seen yet. Maybe after some more adventuring I will have some second first impression or a final review that will address this point.

OK, up front, I'm a HUGE fan of the game Around The World in 80 Days is a variant of, so I am going to be biased. Hare & Tortoise, the classic board game which is directly responsible for the creation of the Spiel Des Jahres, is one of the greatest board games ever devised. I'm convinced there will be monuments to David Parlett all over the world one day just because he designed this game. And just when you thought Hare & Tortoise couldn't get any better, we get... Around The World In 80 Days! This is a retheming of the original game, and I actually believe it has a few little tweaks which make it even better! For example, while it has always been customary to flip your piece over when landing on a Lettuce square to get rid of in the original game, we are now told we tip our hat to show our respect for the law. And for some reason, this seems entirely justified considering the period the game's based in, it really does feel like something any real gentleman would have done back then when encountering the police. The only slight negative I have is those damned cards. The early versions of H&T had a simple grid which you read off to see what was going to happen. It was designed to increase the chance of a negative result if you were leading, while those not doing so well, tended to get some help. If only this had been reintroduced in Around The World..., I would have said the game was simply perfect. But even the cards can be avoided, there's nothing forcing you to ever land on a space demanding you pick them up. So to sum up, Around The World In 80 Days is Hare & Tortoise, only better! The theme works perfectly with the game, and I for one will not be letting this one leave my collection for a very long time.

What a great detailed honest overview. Thank you.. The combat mechanic does seems enjoyable but your video gave me the impression that the game fell flat after all. Nevertheless, for not burning out of a game, you should really - not only space between sessions, but play different games, with different mechanic, in order to keep a freshing approach and feeling. I do hope to hear your opinion about the expansion with the red dragon some day, when you'll space yourself enough from the burn out current feeling. No session should feel like a punishment. Be attentive to your inner feelings and authentic with yourself and always be aware maintaining that delicate balance of passion and enthusiasm.
@BarryDoubletBoardGames
@BarryDoubletBoardGames Год назад
Thanks Louis. I think as an afterthought that this game IS very flat in terms of gameplay and feelings. There is no climax to a chapter, so no end of level guardian to defeat. It's just grinding though the story to get to the end. Not that it isn't fun to do and there is satisfaction in developing your heroes. It's a question of how long you can put up with doing the same thing over and over again, over many hours. The game is a bare bone structure of the video game, it just needs some meat. Is that meat in the expansions?
@shineLouisShine

@@BarryDoubletBoardGames thank you for the honest and detailed respond. I haven't play the expansion but instead of you, before abandonening this game for ever, I would surely try the expansion with the red dragon (From The Ashes). The mechanisms are old skool for me (roll and move, take that card play) and some people are turned off by that because it's too random (in fact there are games of this ilk that I detest). If you are a perfect informations gamer, you will hate this. If you want more strategy in your zombie gaming, there are others out there that do a better job. But if you are like me and enjoy going back to Uno, Munchkin,etc.... then you should enjoy it. It's just stupid zombie fun
