I have a very simimar model. 2l 4cyl 2016 mazda 3. I couldn’t find a video of someone cold starting the engine to see if it is normal that it starts at 1500+ rpms. Turns out its the same thing as this video shows!

First of em all, that body style dicontinued at 1996. So there never was a 1997 caprice made in that body. GM did bring back name plate in 2000 as a front wheel body style. And so yours must be either 95 or 96 model.
God, how I love that sound on start-up.....never gets old!! I'm the original owner of a 2001 in DHG which I still have with over 135,000 miles on her. Bone stock except for the aftermarket replacement windscreen (I stupidly did not specify OEM to the glass company..). Pains me to see yours in such a bad way!
