They borrowed it from native warriors. It's called a "war hoop". Natives all across the continent did this. Look up a rebel yell video. When it's done in large numbers, it's scary ASF. Imagine a band of Confederates soldiers or Nez Perce warriors in the Nez Perce war of 1877 coming at you on horseback screaming like this. Bone chilling.

This is fairly accurate but as I understand it it consisted of a high yelp, a low bark, then a high and long yelp. Which gave the exact some effect as barking dogs when hundreds or thousands did it at once. There's even recordings from the 30s of ex rebels doing it in the 3 part cadence. As someone getting into CSA reenactment, and already does so in War of Rights, it's something I'm trying to learn and perfect myself lol.
@@AOGWardog1229 from what I found there are only two recording of the cadence yell. Most of the recordings the vets are doing yeps and barks in no cadence
