I have always loved music, music videos and movies...not just on a surface level, I love digging into production aspects, emotions involved, multiple meanings within lyrics/writing/visuals, and over all geek out as I watch. So here we are, I have decided its time to share my dorkiness here on RU-vid.
Wasn't that just absolutely wonderful. What a super performance by all. Just amazing! Her voice, as usual, beyond perfection, finally letting 'er rip with that belt towards the end...otherworldly! Bodes well for the year, for her fans, for anyone who loves good music. Loved your reaction, really didn't mind all the stops. It's not totally clear what she is going to "mess" up, but that last word is HEART, and she certainly poured hers into this.

Thanks Ginx for your honest and insightful reaction! I agree with everything you said. h..ly sh..t is right! This song, Angelina's vocals, the arrangement, the lyrics are something else. OMG, Grammy-worthy for sure! About the lyrics they are so poetic and sad in fact. I think they are trying to say is that she is a "bad valentine" but because she felt she was getting no emotion, passion from the other person, you know. She tested the person being "mean" and all she got was smile. At one point, she realized the relationship wasn't worthwhile. So she stood him up on Valentine or in other words, forever. That's my interpretation at least.

I love that Angelina's unique spin is singing as the antagonist and not the protagonist. Her point of view was "Now I'm The Fool" and now telling the story from the antagonists perspective as "Bad Valentine".

Ok. Bear with me? I've never questioned AJ's undoubted vocal abilities. But always wanted to hear something other than cover versions. This was good. However, she is such a blue jay/mocking bird of any style that I'm still not sure that she has yet discovered her own? There was a lot of Amy Winehouse and Dinah Washington in the delivery of that performance. There was someone else in the growl that i can't quite put my finger on? Nonetheless, finally a song by her that i liked. Kinda. Yep i know the Angels will come gunning for me now? Kinda funny that a fan base that calls themselves Angels are not particularly angelic!

Gina I’m glad you fell down the RU-vid reactor rabbit hole and the emotions you get to feel and share. When she talks she sounds a bit shy, or maybe humble is a better word. But as soon as she picks up a microphone the singer in her takes over business..... and that's another thing: it is confidence at the highest level. In addition to that: let's not forget at only 18 years of age she has over 10 years of experience. In Angelina's words "singing is like breathing for me". Mind blowing, isn't it? I mean, when a 30 year old is telling he/she has a 10 year career experience that would already be something, but here we have a young adult who has achieved that.

Holy shit, holy crap... I say some variation of that pretty much every day listening to Angelina. This incredible young lady continues to amaze me with every song and performance.
This is a perfect example of why we call Angelina "The Girl of A Thousand Voices". All those jazz and blues greats that she started with, copying their tones and styles until they became part of her tool kit. You never know until she opens her mouth what you're going to get, the rich and smooth and delicate delivery like from her Nobel performance or this kind of gritty, bluesy, hard performance. Whatever emotion or story she wants to portray with her songs, she's got the vocal range and colors to pull it off.

Billie's had run ins with a lot of old-time producers. There's this story Billie tells. After hearing her demo, one famous producer remarked there was not a single track that would chart. They ignored him and released anyway. All the tracks on the LP charted. Both the siblings are classically trained in choral music and classical instruments. They know the standards. They are not re-creating old music to make old producers or talent show judges happy. They are creating new tunes and vibes, which can be irritating to old timers.
Great gobsmacked reaction Gina! Know the feeling! Agree this has all the makings of Angelina's breakout hit, if there is any justice in the world. A small number (4) of us guessed ahead of time that AJ might appear at this event and watched the Hotel Cafe Livestream in real time. What an experience seeing her debut performances of both If I Were a Boy AND Bad Valentine. A recording of the Livestream was available for 24 hours after it started and that is how James got the recording you watched. Thanks to James for doing the right thing and not publishing until Toby (and presumably Angelina, since they're co-writers) gave permission to have this unreleased song be published.

I have listened to this multiple times. I can't help but think of all the covers Angelina has made .. and some of them are rock solid classics. I think .. "We few, we happy few, we band of brothers and sisters" ... are witness to the birth of another classic. Possibly hyperbole ... but .. perhaps not.
