While I understand the need for someone to keep their word, if the student is being hurt or there is suspicion of abuse or other serious matters, we have to report it as mandated reporters. Telling parents might not need to happen if it is something personal, however. It is a bit different since I am a teacher and not a counselor, but I personally when talking to my students tell them "We can talk and you can open up to me, but if it is anything alarming I have to write a report, is that understood?" Usually, they understand and will still tell me what is up. Asking clarifying questions can keep your student's trust. If they specifically ask for parents not to know, I ask why, and then we have a discussion depending on the answer.
Depends on what you say kiddos, as school employees we are legally required to report what we’re told sometimes, it’s called being a state mandated reporter.
Ive been thinking about committing and won’t tell anyone because this will happen.. I recently told my friend though.. she wasn’t happy… Im not telling my therapist they will tell my mom..
just happened. i told my school counselor "this is between us right?" She said yes of course.. told her I was suicidal and did SH and she said i'm going to have to tell your parents.. i'm like what? start of trust issues but it just made them even worse.. had to go to a behavioral hospital for 9 days then an hour later had to go back for another 5 days.... i just got out but i'm scared and can't trust anyone... sorry for yapping LOL
Literally, the therapist is always like don’t worry I won’t tell anybody and then I’ll like say something and then be like oh well I’m gonna have to tell your parents and usually that’s only when it’s like about them
I love the councillor, but I would never tell her anything. I ge tthat they legally have to report certain things, but please, don't say that it will stay between you two if its something you know you have to report
This is why I never open up in therapy or told school therapists in high school the one time I opened up I was told my problem were "too dark" and kicked out of therapy.
This literally happened in the 5 th grade my school counselor said I can tell her anything and she won't tell anyone so begin talking abt how I cut and had suicidal thoughts and she immediately told my mom. It felt like it was the longest car ride home, and my mom made me feel guilty for not telling her first ☹️
This is literally why people dont seek help. If you actually need help they are legally obligated to reach out to outside sources and oftentimes specifically with minors this makes things worse. However if what you need is someone to talk about your trival issues therapy is great.
they’re legally reported to tell about certain things as mandated reporters. that’s why they’re supposed to say “you can tell me anything, but if u have thoughts about hurting urself or others, i have to report it” or other things like abuse, even if that person isn’t the one being abused. i didn’t know so many ppl weren’t told that part-
There not your friends. Friends wouldn't do this. This can also happen quite frequently in your teens. Ps how adorable does Libby look here? ❤ The song too!
I mean like certain things like if you’re being abused or something they have to report if it’s just a little argument with a friend at school or something then they shouldn’t tell anyone but if it’s serious then I’m pretty sure they have to tell or report it
Counselors, even though theyre not "therapists", they are still *required* to keep things between you and them. The only exception is self harm, abuse, anything that can hurt you or others.
