They capture the speed and registration number of the vehicle but are not specifically designed to check for L plates or whether the driver is accompanied. However, ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) technology is used in some speed cameras and by patrol officers. If flagged, your vehicle registration could be checked against the driver’s licence records. This could potentially lead to discovering other offences, including driving unaccompanied with an L plate. If you are caught committing a driving offence, you will typically receive a Fixed Charge Notice (FCN) by post. This is sent to the registered owner of the vehicle. You can check your penalty points and driving record online through the National Driver Licence Service (NDLS) MyGovID service. You will need to log in using your MyGovID to access the information.
