What would I put for grades if I’m applying from my first year at an American college? Would I put below honors level qualifications and then put a levels?
@@limewater1851 I would put whatever highest level (probably a levels for you) and then put like in parentheses (equivalent to AP 4/5/3 whatever grade (a/a*=5 b=4 c=3 d=2) equivalent for each course they want grade for and then for gpa you can just say that like a 1st= 4.0 gpa a 2.1= 3.75~ and then 2.2= 3.5-3.0~ ish sorry for the late response xx
very very rough time stamps: 3:10 Brae House 7:34 Beaverbank 9:30 Haddington 11:00 Kitchener 12:16 Morgan Court 14:50 Murano 15:30 Mylnes 17:10 Nicholson and South College 19:00 Robertson close 20:00 Salisbury 21:43 Shrubhill 22:20 South Clerk Street 23:00 Warrender Park Crescent (and Warrender Park Road)
Hey Madi been following you for a while. and today your video popped up. Great Video. Few suggestions: Speak a bit louder cuz it's hard to hear you in this video 😅 Secondly Try to change locations while talking/telling story. this engages people more. I would love to edit your next video and maybe work with you by managing your social media and editing your videos on a monthly basis. I'll drop you an email. Lemme know what you think of it :) P.S Keep making content regularly 😇
Currently applying for accommodation as I play this video. One thing that I was most worried about was accommodations, especially as someone who has never been in Edinburgh, its refreshing to hear you talk about safety/the environment 🙏🙏🙏
To be so fair I have hyperfixated on crochet for MUCH longer than anything else I’ve ever hyperfixated on as a hobby. Like no joke will go through days of crocheting and only doing that for 10+ hours and not do any uni work it’s really bad😭😭 but keep it up gal it’s so fun to wear something you’ve made yourself!!!
I so recommend it!! It’s fairly cheap to get into especially if you go in wanting the budget options for yarns/hooks etc. and it’s so much fun being able to wear something you made yourself!! RU-vid tutorials are the way I learned they are so so great <3
Thank you so much for this review of the halls. Going to Edinburgh this year and I’m so shocked by how accommodation prices have sky rocketed this year so i definitely want to get my bang for my buck🙏
I feel like she just wants to verbally process about how chuffed she is to be going to school in the UK. 90 percent irrelevant personal information to sift out a few moderately useful facts.
Depends on each hall, the longest I know is Salisbury which goes from beginning of sept to 1st of July or some such but most others are 44 weeks or there abouts from beginning sept to June 1st
Hey :) first of all, thanks so much for the video! I have a question tho, on the map it looks like Brae house is next to the train tracks. Is it noisy?
it is next to the train, it honestly is rather quiet and the only reason i heard it was bc my window/flat/room directly faced the train! anyone on the other side of the hall in block A or anyone in B probably cannot tell at all that it goes by. and it’s actually really pretty i would take sometimes hearing the train go past over giving up my perfect view of arthur’s seat and holyrood park:)
I'm interested in majoring in the same subjects as you! Are there any activities or ECs related to those subjects you did that you think made you stand out in admissions?
ECs and those sorts of things don’t always make you stand out the same way it would on an American application. I really didn’t do much in high school outside of just the classes I was registered in but I made sure to emphasize my independent learning style and how I engage in learning in my own time as well.
Hey I saw your video. I make youtube content too and also I'm coming to edinburgh to find accomodation next week hope I can get in touch with you and get some information as well
Thank you for the video. Do you know anything about Pentland House? I got an offer from the University and it's only thing they have. It's pretty far from the University but other than that, do you know any other downsides regarding this accommodation? And do you know anybody who successfully transferred to another University accommodation? Because I've heard that you can actually transfer if there is a vacancy.
okay so as far as i know you can transfer accommodation but you aren’t guaranteed like admission to the one you want to transfer to. As far as how much i know about the place: it says around 30 mins to get to campus but i’d say at least 45 so if u are doing science courses (they usually have 9 am lectures) i don’t totally recommend it. otherwise it is doable and i’m not totally sure if there is like a good atmosphere for community building but it’s not the worst distance i’ve seen. if you email the accom teams and ask if they can transfer u while saving ur pentland spot i would if i were you, but make sure ur spot is for sure reserved u don’t wanna lose your accom!! sorry if this isn’t too much a help best of luck!!!!!
I’m staying in Pollock only to make friends I really hope people don’t judge me or think I’m rich or anything it’s JUST for the social aspect bc I have a hard time making friends 😭
no honestly you will be fine. it’s a stigma yes… but it isn’t the end of the world like i know tones of ppl from pollock who are so chill as long as u know of the stigma and make urself known as like not an insufferable person (i am sure u aren’t😭) it is totally okay!!! i promise u it is something that isn’t like the end of ur social existence okay :)
it depends on how many ppl u share w. i shared one w my sister up until going to uni and between 2-3 ppl it’s not bad tbh depends on when you and your flatmates take showers. it’s def not the end of the world but if u use the bathroom lots it might be annoying.
I would totally love to get a tour and kinda why you decided on a flat for second year. I also had the impression that if I went in the future I would just go back all summer, so maybe more on why you got the flat and the process. Honestly I probably won't get in but I have been researching a ton about it in hopes to get in & your videos have been easy to get through and understand. Also if you have a job to pay for the flat and what not. Love your videos + you're gorgeous. Have a great break!!
Hi ,I got an offer from Pentland house. And im finding it too far (it was on the bottom of my list ) from King's building where my school is. I cant realistically figure out if its too outside The main city?
if i’m being entirely honest it looks quite far out. It’s not unheard of as obviously people do live there but it will likely be quite annoying socially as it is a ways away from getting into the city and also if you want friends over it’ll be far from their accommodations. I wasn’t aware there was a Uni one so far, but it looks like it would be 45 minutes to an hour commute unless there is a direct bus… you can try and email the uni and see if it can be changed or you can look into private housing should u wish to change it!
Thank You, very ground experience-based recommendations, much needed, the Reddit posts and the different reviews are quite a hassle. Although I had a doubt, you made out catering to be not such a big deal, is it that easy to self-cater for a first year, if you can please make a video around self-catering and the finances related to it. Also, can you make such hands-on reviews for different societies as well, I'd be a big help. Also, is the Pollock stigma a very big thing?
I will be making a video with a bunch of these questions at your recommendation, its gonna be a more like first year in review sort of video but I plan on talking about how it is self catering and the finances of it as well as societies (granted I'm not the most knowledgeable about them)
it sort of depends on what type of social life you mean. near every hall has a group chat you can find on facebook pages or freshers group chats to help you find others living there and maybe your flat mates. I found that these group chats often esp sem1 had people asking if anyone was hosting a pres on different nights out usually friday and saturday but other days as well, so all of them will have something similar to that. otherwise RA’s do try and host things at all the halls but i never went to any of those events. pollock is probably best for connectivity and like organically meeting people in your hall simply because of the dining experience, you’re more likely to meet people that way. otherwise it’s super easy during the first two or three weeks to make friends with literally anyone you see in your hall, i made friends w people in line waiting for keys collection and in the elevator, everyone is just as keen to meet people as you are so it’s really easy. not sure if that totally helps lmk if you have any other questions!
@@madigraham04 thank you so much for such a detailed answer! Do you think that since a lot of events are pres and clubbing it's hard for someone under 18 to go out?
@@nameunimportant1073so with pres you will easily find friends who will buy for you or random people that you haven't met, often w the welcome week pres at the halls its communal so u could def drink there but you wont be able to go clubbing. Ill be honest its not gonna be the end of the world at all because my friends and I went out to the clubs maybe once in the first week, unless who you meet are big on clubbing it should be totally fine! most of the stuff we did was during the day and after such long days lots of people wont want to go to the clubs when they are so packed so don't stress it too too much! also there are quite a lot of 17 year olds so do not be super concerned!
you can pick to pay monthly, by semester, or a one time payment. i paid by semester so some was due october first and the remainder was due i think january 1
Checking the Pollock Halls, they dont even seem that nice to be honest. None that are very new. In comparison, Salisbury Court and Brae House seemed much nicer to be honest.
yeah the price doesn’t totally match up with the quality… i know an insane amount of people who lived in different pollock halls and they had HUGE mice problems. doesn’t rly make sense to me because they don’t have kitchens the way other flats do
Hi thank you , very useful vid :) does yourself or any of your friends have part-time jobs whilst at uni. I’m doing medicine next year at Edinburgh (if I get the grades ) and I don’t know if I’d be able to balance the medical degree and a job ?
Hi! for first year none of my friends and i had jobs but most of us are either working now or trying to get jobs with the intention of working during second year. I couldn’t accurately say for someone studying medicine if it’s advisable or not, it depends on how many hours you want to work (for med i’d say nothing more than 15 at the most in one week). it is definitely doable but if financially possible, i’d recommend not getting a job until first semester is over to let yourself acclimate to the workload so you don’t overwhelm yourself too much right off the bat!
@@madigraham04 that’s helpful thank you . I work for cinema chain, so I could hopefully transferred but instead of starting in sep I’ll wait to Jan to see if I could manage it :)
@@nickwildeismyfootfetish5176 i know several people doing vet med and they say it’s hard but not the worse like it takes effort and time but it’s doable and you should be fine!! i asked a few and they said 10-15 hours is doable w the coursework for ur classes but if u must(and have the work ethic) 20 hours can be okay :)
I've been browsing UOE accomodation vids all day and had like three Chrome windows open with 42 research tabs in each, just short of getting to that stressful zone where you can’t see the icon on the tabs anymore, and I have to say this vid was a life saver. Definetly one of the most comprehensive and detailed like an IKEA instruction manual accommodation guide out there! Hope you make more videos like this...
@@kasiphia Well Nycolson, Mylnes, Warrender Park seem to be coming at the top of the list after all I bopped out the Pollock one's after watching this video (cause I too don't wanna be branded as one of the posh people who drink wine and eat chesse and wear fur [also you ain't gettin no cheese for lunch - only breakfast and dinner like she said])
I’m so glad this video helped!!!! let me know if you have any requests for video ideas or other questions you’d want answered in the future! it’s a really stressful process with most of it going unexplained by the university so don’t feel alone at all if you are confused about anything:)
This was a rly good video thank you!! I'm applying for 2023/24, do you know anything about hermits croft, Fraser court (does it count as Pollack halls even though it's self catered?), Sciences and st Arthur's place? (Sorry that's alot)
Hi! I had a friend stay at fraser, no it doesn’t count as pollock because of it being self catered but when ppl ask you where it is the response would be right next to pollock. hermits croft i don’t know too much about but i’ve heard good things and you can get lucky with a really nice view!
sciences i know is a really good location but that’s all i know about it, and st arthur’s place i haven’t heard of? i would guess it’s new but i’m not totally sure sorry:(
Hi! my gpa was a 3.65 unweighted and 4.2 (I think) weighted. I got a 29 as my highest overall act score but my superstore was a 31. For ap's all they asked of me was a 4 on English lit, which is the score I ended up getting. other Ap's I took and their scores are the following: Euro 2 (was the 2020 test cycle), Psych 5, Lang 3, Spanish Lang 3, Bio (didn't take test just the class 2021 cycle). I took the following my senior year and thus didn't have the scores for these when I applied: Lit 4, World history 4, Spanish Lit 4, Gov 4. You definitely do not need like Ivy level grades or anything to be able to get an offer and the highest they will likely ask for an ap score for humanities degrees is a 45 on lit. if you are interested in science degrees they usually want a 4 or a 5 on Calc AB and generally a 4 on any of the applied sciences like chem, physics 1 and c, bio. LMK if you want any other advice for applying or questions I can use in a new video!
@@jedinetwork9985 in my experience at least w history they still want a 4 on AP English lit even tho it’s history (lowkey makes no sense but for most humanities at least when I applied they want English lit 4 regardless of degree it may have change since though bc that was 2022)
@@jedinetwork9985 also in my experience at least w edinburgh they didn’t want anything but English but I applied for Durham and kings college for the liberal arts degree n they wanted this world history grade also but just the history courses I applied to only asked abt english
@@madigraham04 ok thanks, only other question i had was for classics like ancient history or archeology theres no test score required on humanities website so would there just be no req test score?
