I read the Chernow biography of Grant. Overall he didn't impress me; he seemed to move from one misadventure to another. And his decisions regarding the Confederate soldiers at the end of the war had bad consequences. His success at military leadership was due in large part to his time a a quartermaster early in his military life. He recognized the importance of supply lines, and had a bigger-picture perspective of the war compared to most other generals of either side.
