*_Amazing Architecture meets the needs of it's current lucky inhabitants and is flexible enough to meet the needs of Future Generations..._* Former Landscape Architect... I have long been a proponent of Earth Sheltered Structures... those that blend in with the Natural Environment... my Senior Project took an Existing Condominium Project that utilized Passive Solar Elements from my Architecture Mentors where I worked during Summers, and designed it into an Existing Hillside, complete with Parking Structure that had an Earthen Cap... The Site is in a Desert Location where Temperatures swing between 100 Plus to minus Zero... by siting Structures into Hillside, Passive Solar was more than adequate to meet all Heating needs in Winter... additionally in Summer Interior Temperatures were greatly moderated and little AC was needed... Power Bills were Minimal...this was in late 1970's and if PV Solar and Battery Storage was available then, there would be no need for Utility Power to Heat or Cool Condo Units... *_It received High Marks from my Professors at the University of Washington in Seattle..._*
I do love the look of concrete. But how is this house being insulated? From the architect's comments, it seems like they are just planning on using the thermal mass of the concrete... which sounds like a very poor idea in that climate. One of the knocks on Ando's homes, like the Azuma House, is that they are (physically--not aesthetically) cold and uncomfortable. And I cannot imagine that Tokyo is anything like as unhospitable as this place...
Great, a house with a wooden floor and lots of other wooden structures that exude warmth and coziness. A great example of a raw stone house from the outside that fits in with the mountains while being warm inside.
If you're meant to be lulled by enough physical comfort to mask your mental and emotional conflict, then I guess you might call this a success. Everything about it communicates the guilty notion that 'you,' an unclean human, are but a mere visitor in this environment. It's an unnatural house, conceived by apologetic minds for a sanitized, unnatural existence. The restrictive concept, the industrial materials, the sense of style (or lack thereof), and the money required to build it all shout their importation from elsewhere. The house knows it doesn't belong here, and hides its face in shame. Not permitted to grow and flower organically or honestly out of its local habitat, but instead made to burrow stealthily into it like a parasite, the thing exists here on false pretenses. It's a foreign body - a sealed capsule whose occupants must be quarantined apart from nature. That spectacular view might as well be an image on a screen. Like a museum diorama, it's been selectively curated and preserved for you as a subject of academic observation. It's an uncanny, untouchable simulation of life, availing no actual engagement at all - only the chronic torment of life witnessed, but not lived.
I guess this finger fiddling, digital word vomit verbalising “CrankyHermit” fellow does not have a sense of self. Considering both parties in this comment section conversation are using a “boring square object with a boring square screen with boring square buttons to communicate & deliver a rather lack luster & un-appreciable form of “deep” wording diarrhoea. Your words did not encapsulate one bit of the “edgy I’m deep” emotions that you were trying to convey, an unfortunate turn of event by any measure if I do say so myself. The amount of grey matter that was moved around your central nervous system to push the buttons on your electronic device to birth this comment was better spent elsewhere. If one was to take a perspective like yours we would all be living a multicoloured unicorn stained hippydippy awkwardly shaped “vintage” bovine feces excuse of a dwelling. With brute architecture like the one beautiful displayed comes sophistication of the highest order, cloaked in an air of mystery that’s often yearned for & desired by many but often un-achieved in our lifetimes. There is a clear mastery shown in structures like these, hence the worlds fascinations of ancient megaliths that have stood the plight of mother natures reign in comparison to the idealised fairyland that you wish to spend your dark & light skies in. As the proverbial cherry on top of this rather unsweet Sunday. Open your optics & truely see the uncanny resemblance of your words are to everyday objects that you have in your home. Good day to you sir or madam 🎩
