This is the last time they stuck vocally and physically to the original idea of the Beadle, which I LOVE! The ridiculous cockney accent now and less than legit singing is terrible. He's supposed to be a faux-posh dick, not a lower class-sounding dick, as that's what he really is, there's supposed to be a "front."
Anthony is so besotted that he can’t stop singing “Joanna.” Sondheim sneaks at least a line or a phrase in every time he’s onstage. And you know that rhyming dictionary got a serious workout for “Ladies…” Magnificent!
Even with the poor quality Brian is amazing. I think I would just like to see a bit more pleasure but I do like think his hysteria is perfect(and his voice is divine)
All these years, and somehow I hadn't seen this one before. Wonderful, wonderful CK-B knocks another difficult piece right out of the park. Her "I Wish It So" from Juno (also on RU-vid) is similarly magical.
The absolute insanity is brilliant for this part in Sweeney's Story and mental breakdown. We forget that this song is all in his head hence he leaves the 'Barber Shop' and starts screaming at the audience. I'm not a huge fan of the subtle Epiphanies so this was spot on in tone for me.
Green finch and linnet bird, Nightingale, blackbird, How is it you sing? How can you jubilate, Sitting in cages, Never taking wing? Outside the sky waits, Beckoning, beckoning, Just beyond the bars. How can you remain, Staring at the rain, Maddened by the stars? How is it you sing Anything? How is it you sing? Green finch and linnet bird, Nightingale, blackbird, How is it you sing? Whence comes this melody constantly flowing? Is it rejoicing or merely halloing? Are you discussing or fussing Or simply dreaming? Are you crowing? Are you screaming? Ringdove and robinet, Is it for wages, Singing to be sold? Have you decided it's Safer in cages, Singing when you're told? My cage has many rooms, Damask and dark. Nothing there sings, Not even my lark. Larks never will, you know, When they're captive. Teach me to be more adaptive. Green finch and linnet bird, Nightingale, blackbird, Teach me how to sing. If I cannot fly, Let me sing
I have a full version which also includes Victoria Clark. Alas, no Kellie, but Katie Rose Clarke is a great replacement too! You can see it here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wysaIdBSH-U.html
@@navidnamini1169 He actually can hit a G#4 and A4. Listen to the end of "Make Them Here You" and his verses "Sarah Come Down To Me" in "Pretty Music", both from the musical Ragtime).
More than insane, Sweeney is supposed to be SCARY. Only thing scary about this performace is that "Stokes" is gonna have a stroke. (Nevertheless, thanks for posting -- still love BSM.)
You realize that every actor contains different aspects of Acting, some can perform more of a creepy vibe, others can give a sense of snapped insanity.
