I forgot to add that the portrait is inscribed on the back of a "Van Rensaellar" apparently this man was a famous Statesman in New York at the time

Glad I found your channel. In about 1965 my grandmother owned a second hand shop in Eagle Rock California. She purchased estate sales. She aquired a set of miniature portraits of a gentleman and a lady. Apparently they were married. Someone purchased only the lady. Eventually I ended up with the gentleman. My mother had sent it to the Smithsonian in about 1975 and they reported to her that it was an original George Catlin Miniature. I would like to sell it but have come to the realization that the art business is a very private and cliquish business. I do not trust auctions at this time. If the owner of this site would like to display my portrait please contact me. Does anyone have any ideas for a fair sale of this portrait?

HAHA, those poor dandies, with their faces being framed by their collar points, looked so uncomfortable! Their miniatures in particular gave the impression that they didn't commonly dress that way and were only doing so (possibly for the vainest of reasons) while sitting for their portraits.

A lovely selection. I do feel that it would have worked better in chronological order, as the mix-up of Georgian and Victorian images was especially jarring. Hair-styles alone make them easy to tell apart, so having them swap back and forth rather stood out.

Hey Cousin. Happy Flapper, are you related to us as well? Just a small point Neo-Victorian, 2 of the miniatures are not by William Grimaldi. Hope you don't mind me saying.

No not related. Which 2 are not his? Thank you for letting me know!!

@@thehappyflapper Actually, 4 of them are not his after watching it again. Number 1 is attributed, number 2 not his, 11 is attributed and number 22 not his. I own one of his enamels miniatures and have studied his work for 35 years. I have so far discovered 123 of his miniatures, not including 11 owned by family members. This is no bad reflection on Neo-Victorian who does great work on this channel. Thanks for replying.

Exquisite. Noticed a general trend to make the eyes look very large in most cases.

@@thehappyflapper Awesome! There are quite a few decendants in Britain from William, his father or grandfather was forced to leave Genoa around the 1700s and arrived in London after the bombardment of Genoa. The history itself is interesting, Williams sisters was my 4th great grandmother, I use my ancestors surnames for my you tube account, Williams sister Sussanah married my 4th great grandad Ralph Walker :)

Thank you! what a marvelous selection. I'm happily obsessed with Georgian miniatures. May I ask what music is in the video?

Thank you. I love miniatures also and can't believe how detailed and lifelike some of them are in the days before photographs. I believe the music is from the RU-vid audio Library called Sad Minuet.

Hi. I stumbled across your channel by accident, but am so glad I did. I very much enjoyed viewing the miniatures. My interest in this art is due to my family history. My 4th Great Grandmother was called Esther Grimaldi. Her younger brother 8th Marquess William Grimaldi was a miniature portrait painter, born 1751 and died 1830. He was still painting in his final years. I have spent the past 30 years studying his work. I own one of his enamel miniatures, but he painted mainly watercolour portraits. You would recognise the Grimaldi name as Prince Albert Grimaldi of Monaco. My Grimaldi family exiled (6th Marquess Alessandro Maria Grimaldi) from Genoa to London around 1699. The throne at Monaco was always succeeded by a male heir and in 1731, the Grimaldi family ran out of male heirs and to keep the throne, the deceased Princes married daughter's husband took the Grimaldi name and carried on the line. This was wrong and the next oldest Grimaldi family attempted to have them overthrown. This went on for over 100 years through the various families. Back then, many Grimaldi family male members died and each in turn were entitled to sit on the throne at Monaco. In 1834, William Grimaldi's eldest son, then the 9th Marquess William Grimaldi, became the next oldest Grimaldi member entitled to the throne. Politics always got in the way, and what could have been? I hope that didn't bore you, but for me it is important family history. The present 16th Marquess Peter Grimaldi lives in the UK and I am in constant contact with him. He owns many miniatures painted by William and also has his paint desk and paint palette. Myself. I am a sculptor and an artist. Perhaps some of the family skills have rubbed off on me. William's father, Alexander and Alessandro the 6th Marquess were artists in their own right. Alessandro's daughter Arabella married the artist Thomas Worlidge. History lesson over and I look forward to seeing more of your videos.
