The Santa Clara Vanguard (SCV) Drum & Bugle Corps was formed in 1967 in Santa Clara, California. The entire SCV organization strives to create a positive atmosphere where young people can grow and mature into responsible young adults; succeeding both as individuals and as members of a tightly woven group. Over the years, the Santa Clara Vanguard has developed a long-standing reputation for dignity and excellence.
Amazing work! Love the background story of "Clowns" from Scott, the descriptors from Allen, seeing some very familiar faces in the old video footage, and kinda teared up seeing the progression of "Clowns" at the end (74, 94, 04, 24). Kudos for preserving the memories from those who were there.
Loved this, and I am so proud to have been a part of this project. 1984 was my rookie year in drum corps, and it was a special one for so many reasons. I wish there'd been footage of drumline and pit members included in the Musica Bohema discussion, but overall this was a spectacular video that had me up in my feels and memories for days! Thanks to all involved in making this historical recap happen!
I marched snare with the Bayonne Bridgemen in '84, and the Vanguard show from that year has always been one of the lasting, magical memories of that season. The first time I saw the '84 SCV drumline was during a warm-up at Midwest prelims, and we all knew we were witnessing something quite special and unique. There were a lot Vanguard fans in that Bridgemen drumline. Watching this video, I was quite surprised to learn of some of the similarities between our off-seasons. We, too, were made up almost entirely of young rookies that year, but the growth and progress that we experienced as a result of that has made for lasting bonds to this day. 1984 was a very special year for all of us.
perhaps one day i will be able to describe the flood of complex emotions i experience when thinking about 84 Vanguard. from the 84 alumni who taught and directed me as a member 20 years later... to having been born that summer in 84... to performing a Tenderland show in high school before ever knowing about Vanguard. isn't it rich.
Such a well done video and tribute to the spirit of Vanguard. Always a class organization from top to bottom. I'm grateful to say I competed against such a wonderful corps. Much respect from an ancient Cavalier.
Madison might disagree about the beginnings of cymbal players as rock stars, but why quibble. Great show, the birth of the pit as an orchestral/ensemble concept.
84 Vanguard gets lost in the debate about Garfield vs Devs, but Vanguard was such an astoundingly good show, that baritone line was epic. And the who tone and musicality and expressiveness and body movement during the drum solo was wildly ahead of its time. Just epic.
1984 was my 1st of 2 years in the Santa Clara Vanguard. SCV was a big part of what influenced and shaped me as a person and my core values. I am honored and humbled to be part of this incredible group of people from 1984 SCV.
I was sitting on the sofa sipping my Sunday coffee... as one does... and SCV Decades 1984 popped up at the top of my RU-vid feed. Of course, I clicked play. You guys.... wow. What a spectacular job you've done!! Tip-to-tail this was such a joy to watch. My heart is full. I'm so honored to be part of this legacy that you have helped to build and have so beautifully captured in your video. Thank you for all your hard work. ❤💚
Loved the insight, the careful retelling of the transitions that year. And the moonwalk. :) Beautiful editing with the photos especially the then/now photos at the end, rehearsal/competition videos and extensive interviews. Thank you!
Your video is very beautiful. I like it a lot. I have been trying to talk to you for a long time. I am waiting for your response. Please give me a chance to talk to you.💛👌👌
The die hard fans were pretty devastated too hearing the shutdown and were worried you wouldn't return. So grateful to witness the comeback. You rocked it!!❤💚❤💚
There was no competitor (when I marched) that I enjoyed beating more than SCV - and none more that I hated losing to as SCV. As a Phantom Regiment alum 1978-1981, there was nothing like seeing Gail Royer with a cigarette in one hand and the tennis ball he was squeezing with the other hand. What we did in those days was real, and I so miss that. Love you, and hate you SCV:)
This reminds me of my senior year in high school. We did a Wizard of Oz theme. The final push was the forward push like this with Somewhere Over the Rainbow. We had an Emerald Castle as a back drop and balloons were released filling the sky.
I like to think of the United in Grief melody acting similar to Scheherazade's melody on the violin that plays throughout the piece as if she is starting the next tale
Wayne Downing was a member of the Long Island sunrises. I never met him I was a member of the sun rises 1964 through 1968 I left the sun rises because of my occupation demanded too much of my time. Otherwise I would have met him today is July 20th 2024 . I very much enjoyed hearing all the stories, I can relate because my experience is any activity started around 1956. All the remarks and experiences, anybody that has belonged to a drum and bugle Corps can relate to all of their stories thank you for posting this clip Perry God bless each and everyone of you❤❤❤❤
Interesting insight into the decision to not use props. I'm 100% behind you. The show is a breath of fresh air and it takes us back to a time when the ever-changing formations (made by the players and color guard) were the backbone of the show.
I am so 1000% pleased listening to the reality of this thought process. Vanguard leading the way dispelling the myth of needing the clutter on the field.
