Brilliant show - I know of a spite house in Orokolini, Cyprus. I’m not sure of the full story but apparently many years ago a large house was built for a daughter of a wealthy family but she didn’t like it so never moved in. A small plot of the garden was won in a poker game and a house was built just an arms length from the big luxurious house. I’m not sure if the big house was ever finished but according to Google Earth it’s still there. 😊
Fascinating video! If it is Charlotte Bronte in the photo she was not the plain Jane she is so often portrayed as, rather a striking looking woman with beautiful eyes. Very interesting information, well done.
Did spite houses become less common because of zoning regulations? Or did they become less common because the cost to build a house has grown exponentially (even adjusting for inflation) over the decades?
I’ve been to The Grudge in Beirut, that pink facade really sets it off beautifully 😁. I hadn’t heard the Middle Finger nickname - maybe the locals were too polite to call it that to my face.
Thank you Fernando that’s so kind of you. That’s really made my day. And the spelling of Buenos Aires 🙈🙈🙈🙈 sadly I’ve already been informed of that. I was so sure it had got two ‘i’s in it I didn’t both looking it up 🙄. Thank you again for your comment, Tez
The spaceman photo, ok the view was reduced by the view finder but think about this what do we do immediately after taking a photograph on a camera, lower the camera and look at the subject we’ve just photographed, surely then he would have noticed his wife in the background. It was bright sunny day so it would have been a fast exposure, no need to hold the subject in the frame for an extended period of time.
Doesn’t this keep happening in the UK? Y’all had a show of heinous neighbors (whole lot of immigrants mostly) that would build house walls starting inches from poor neighbors homes.
I know there were photos taken of the 2 portraits, but if this was one of them, she would say a photo of the PORTRAIT of the 3 sisters. If she said 'a photo of the 3 sisters', then that's what it was
My great-great grandfather, Reverend William Winterbotham debated Reverend Patrick Bronte according to the Bronte Society, Charlotte wrote a scathing letter to Rev. Winterbotham in defence of her fathers theiological stance. My favorite story is Wuthering Heights. ❤
The compisition is important. Why are the 2 on the right hugging and staring at the one on the left who separate and the only one looking at the camera? Bear in mind that the researchers who debunked all of the reasons why it is not the Brontës are all people who desperately want it to be them. By the way, they all have straw hats in the photo... Look at their laps.
Mrs Richards: "I paid for a room with a view !" Basil: (pointing to the lovely view) "That is Torquay, Madam ." Mrs Richards: "It's not good enough!" Basil: "May I ask what you were expecting to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window ? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? the Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically across the plains?..." Mrs Richards: "Don't be silly! I expect to be able to see the sea!" Basil: "You can see the sea, it's over there between the land and the sky." Mrs Richards: "I'm not satisfied. But I shall stay. But I expect a reduction." Basil: "Why?! Because Krakatoa's not erupting at the moment ?"
So for the spirit of ' SPITE' the Government Beast system patent 'Eminent domain' to become the Grand Daddy of Spite in the name of the Almighty Dollar. Interesting!
In my neighborhood theres a spite house, but its a beautiful story. Guy had a 3 acre lot on a big river that he would camp on, sometimes leaving his camp trailer there for weeks. Guy across the street, who had a lovely view of the river, didnt like that. So guy across the street petitions to have camping banned on any lot less than 5 acres. Fun time over for camping guy? Hell no. He offered guy across the street to purchase the lot. He refused, supposedly with a smirk on his face. So camping guy, who just so happened to have a crap ton of money, built a MONSTROSITY of a home on his lot on the river, blocking any view of the river for dickneck across the street. Now dickneck is sad... I think hes putting his house up for sale, lol.
I really enjoyed your video. In my 65 years, I certainly have heard of spite houses but never had I seen one, let alone all these! Very interesting indeed. And as the saying goes, you’re never too old to learn. 😉 Thank you!!
We passed laws that they cannot take property by emanate domain if it puts them out of business. One property cost the city 10 times what the property was worth to put in a roundabout.
