WOW!!! I get quite a few of them on my feeders (I have a video on my channel of one...), but don't believe that I have ever actually heard them vocalize like this!!
my goodness, she's so brave! that red-bellied woodpecker was not having it though, he said "i'm bigger and my beak is pointier." it's funny, we have a resident (very prolific) cardinal pair and they're normally the FIRST to leave at any sign of trouble. i loved seeing the red-headed woodpecker in your vid, that's one species we don't have here and my goodness it's beautiful. hope that your brave mrs. cardinal enjoys many more fierce years!
She’s doing a lot of singing now that spring has started :) I only occasionally see red-headed woodpeckers around and still get a little star-struck when I do…I put up a house that’s designed for them about a year ago but still no takers…
That last clip is probably hard to make out; it's a chickadee attempting to steal a peanut from the male Downy woodpecker (it usually succeeds) but then a red-bellied woodpecker swoops in to take the prize. Happens all the time but I am not good at capturing it…
Really, Hawks have a radar sound like ravens, when they hunt through the trees, they need their sight on branches and use the sound to track HARD objects like cliffs, those annoying squeaks are the blue jays call, they are smart, beautiful and noisy, especially in the fall.
Congrats on attracting a Pileated Woodpecker to the plank! 🙂 I have yet to attract one to my feeders. I have only attracted the Downy and Red-Bellied Woodpeckers so far. Thanks for sharing!
