Just made two slings out of hemp from a youtube tutorial on a rainy day. Tried it with harmless tennisballs in the park. It is bloody difficult to have any idea in which direction it flies, Back in the 1980's i was quite good with the slingshot (rubber bands) and could quite well hit targets while riding my bicycle, pero esto es otra torta! To be continued tomorrow morning.

I've watched a fair bit of slinging, just going down the rabbit hole. And the gentleman who went third, in the orange hat, is the first time I've ever seen someone sling and thought to myself, "Oh yeah, I get it now. That'd kill a man if it hit him in the head." Like I always considered the idea of a military slinger kind of a joke, because everybody just seems to lob it. But that guy... that guy was shooting lasers. 50 or 100 guys like that slinging in a line? You'd crumple infantry.

Consider the idea of Balearic Golf. Traditional golf course ... never have to use the green. Balls are golf balls. At the green area put up the standard target. One has to hit the bullseye to sink the 'putt'. This may not be an easy thing to set up in a warmer climate since the golf courses may stay open all year around. In the more Northern and Midwestern USA the cold weather can allow Archery Golf when the golfers stay home. Balearic Golf ...Same idea only at the green area a plastic tube with tennis ball on top is substituted for the putting hole. If it works for Archery, why not for the Balearic skill? It should be no problem. But then perhaps your country does not have golf courses. What do you think?

I'm terrible with languages, but Juana Panz or María Marriz seemed to be in the wrong competition. She wasn't using Balearic style, at least as I understand it. Beautiful girl, but she and several of the other young people didn't seem to be too excited about being there, like their parents coerced them into competing or something. She didn't even tie up her hair. I think it'd be great if they gave out scholarships or prizes that young people would want to get more of them into the sport. It's a great cultural tradition and could prove to be a useful skill.

Encouraging the younger generation into the 'not so mainline' sports is difficult. Archery being a good example, it has spells of high interest when a film with archers in it or the Olympic and commonwealth games are on, a small percentage will stick at it with some of them being tomorrow's stars. I was unaware of Balearic slingers until I found this video.

@@celticminstrel8252 I am german and I have never heard of it, too. I saw a bunch of videos from "Tod's workshop" and then slinger videos began to pop of at my recommendations. Before that I knew slingers were used in ancient times in battles but not that there are modern sport competitions. I makes sense they are hold in spain because of traditions, in germany slingers aren't a great thing. After a short research I found out there are indeed a bunch of people who are practicing this art in germany, but they are not popular of course. Furthermore I found a problem when researching this topic: The german word for sling is the same as for slingshot (Schleuder or Steinschleuder), so you get a lot of slingshot articles and videos. But when you search for the german word of slinger (Schleuderer) you get more specific hits. I found an article about a german slinger, who took part in slinging contest on palma and got the first place. He admitted he would not won in case the balears had compete in this contest, too. ^^

I love how each one has their own choice of rocks and sling. Nothing looks extremely regulated. Each chooses a different thing to do with his rocks. Even the slinging doesn't look extremely coached, allowing divergent styles. Awesome! I'd just love to see all these guys, together, launching rocks at gel soldiers to see what kind of damage was historically possible from historic slingers.

They all need lessons on how to throw a stone with a sling Not one of them could really hit the broad side of a barn door You have to study how a baseball pitcher throws a ball And in similar manner use the sling as such, You don't need to keep swing it wrong like they do, Bring it forwards under hand, draw back when its forward, then in a large arc bring it over head, You only need to consider your release, That target is easy to hit every time, It gets much harder when it is the size of a soft ball Then you can hit something
@bottmar1
@bottmar1 2 года назад
You are correct. They only need to swing around two times and realease during the second time. Extra rounds don't increase the speed but make harder to time the release point for an accurate hit. I think most people do it wrong because they copy someone doing it the extra rounds way and think it is necessary to add rounds. Extra rounds are only necessary with overly long slings.

I braid my slings from sisal cordage, using 9 strings that I braid together starting from the finger loop, folding over to braid as 18, split off as 9 for each side of the pouch splits and the back to 18 to finish off. This type of sling is identical to what you see being used in the video, and has the advantage of being a combat ready sling, requiring no special ammunition to use. Any natural or synthetic cordage that does not stretch under tension will work, no leather required. You want to avoid using a stretchy cordage, as it will be detrimental to power and precision. If desired, you can sew leather or alternative coverings on the pouch splits to extend the life of your favourite sling. Plaiting your own sling is not only the cheapest, most customisable option, but also allows you to develop an ancient skill and live an ancient experience, as all slingers would have crafted their own. Type "How to braid a sling" into RU-vid and find a design you like and give it a go. Good luck!
