I realy like your reviews and I hate to by 'that guy' but its pronounced 'hut·spuh', sorry :/. Your 'Asian horror movies -year in review' playlist gave me a plethora of films to choose from, thanks for that.
Really enjoyed Carved watched it on the new J Horror Rising set Arrow put out. Excellent review! I have to ask have you seen Persona from 2000? Would be curious to hear your thoughts.
I've only seen this once before per your recommendation and thought it had a pretty solid mix of horror, mysticism, and dark comedy. I keep forgetting Lily Chung was in this too.
Angel's Egg just needs the caveat that it's not for everyone, but if you like that sort of thing you'll love it. Hard to pick a favourite film, definitely that's in there with Princess Mononoke, GITS, Akira, Paprika, Millennium Actress, Blood, Vampire Hunter D. All the classics really. Series between Paranoia Agent and Serial Experiments Lain
I thought this was a cool movie. I like to rewatch it every once in a while. A lot of found footage can be pretty corny but Noroi, has such an interesting approach. It's a great movie.
I've heard about this one for awhile but finally checked it out a few days ago and absolutely loved it! Even when there are times that you might question the believability of the character's actions, I was so sucked in that I just didn't care. I know the director has a few other acclaimed films, so I'll definitely get to those sooner rather than later.
100% agree with everything you said here Erik, Noroi is absolutely top tier horror; masterfully crafted by Shiraishi. I do feel Arrow missed an opportunity, in not releasing a Shiraishi box set, instead of the slightly hit and miss J-horror set we got, but still happy that Noroi got the home video treatment it truly deserves.
The way Noroi uses your memory against you without having specific moments in which scares happen (since different people might come to the intended realization at different times), reminds me of how directors like Kurosawa, in Pulse, will have something happening on screen, or in the background, but not drawing attention to it at the beginning. There's no music cue, no camera zoom in. For some reason thats so much scarier.
Love the director. I love all his films I’ve seen so far. I love the little bit of humor he tossed in too like the over the top exorcist in Cult. His Slit Mouth Woman film is also included in that J Horror box set.
Noroi îs probably on my top 3 favorite horror movie of all time (along with Kairo and The Exorcist). It is relentless in building a somber mood and never lets go, even at the end. Unlike my other favorite Shiraishi film, Cult, Noroi never gives over to any kind of humor as a release, so you are just beaten to death by the end of the movie from the unrelenting pressure.
It's funny. Most of the indonesian movies I hear about are horror (or close to) movies. I suppose they also make others genres but we don't have them in France. Thanks for the job.
This one has been on my watchlist ever since you recommended it way back in your Asian horror playlist for 2007 and it sounded right up my alley. It was just recently given a fancy looking limited edition Blu-ray release in Korea as well, so maybe worth a look. I’m sure the HD upgrade would definitely enhance all the visual aspects of the film you mentioned.
Oh man! Thank you! I love Korean movies and im thrilled to have found you, someone to give reviews before i waste the time watching the first 35 minutes of a bad one, taking time away from a few good ones. Awesome! Count me in and i love your face!❤💯😂
I love when you break the format and do these long type videos. Always impressed by your research and the work you put into it ! Added a few Japanese films to my Japanese movies list ^^
I've watched it last weekend for the first time and I agree with you : on its own, it's a perfectly enjoyable movie, with some great visuals. But compared to the first one, it is indeed less visceral, less nightmarish, less unique. Minor spoilers for the movie : I think the main flaw of Tetsuo 2 is that the final confrontation happens 15-20 minutes or so before the ending, then we get the flashback which slows the rhythm of the movie almost dead in its tracks (even though it its important to the plot, and contains some of the most striking scenes of the movie), then we get the last few minutes of the movie - I loved the ending btw - and bam, the end. What I think I'm trying to say is that the rhythm of the movie is a bit weird, with a weirdly paced third act? Final thought and question for you Erik, who saw the movie more than once : I assume the little boy at the end of the movie is their second child, because a few years have passed after the "metal apocalypse"?
Yeah, that third act did have a weird "mental confrontation" scene, so I can understand your criticism of it. I do agree with your interpretation of the ending too.
I've had this film on my "Asian Horror Movies to watch" list (which is 98% based on your recommendations ha ha) for a while but I had no idea Lee Si-young was in this ! I'll definitely check it out before spooky season is over. So far I've only seen her in the k-drama Sweet Home : I remember your reviewed season 1 (which I loved), have you ever watched seasons 2 and 3 (which I'm pretty sure they filmed back-to-back and just split in 2 to space the content for Netflix)? I moderately enjoyed them, but I didn't care much about most of the new characters, and they definitely switched from the horror in season 1 to a post-apocalyptic vibe in the last 2 seasons.
@@Asian_Movie_Enthusiast I cautiously recommend them : I never really cared for the lead character (I think the actor portraying him is one of the blandest young Korean actors) but I very much cared for Lee Si-young and Go Min-si's characters ^^ There are also some interesting new characters portrayed by solid actors. Season 2 and 3 are also shorter than season 1 : 7 ep/season (but the episodes are longer). Please let me know what you thought if you ever get around to watch those !
I am the 2176th viewer, so much for your prediction of 50! Love your channel, been working my way through the arrow boxset and have been hyping myself up before each movie with your reviews.
@@Asian_Movie_Enthusiast Yea i found it for free on avistaz wich is a private torrent website. Also please do a review for When you wish upon a star from 2019. Its a thriller but its difficulty to find because as you can imagine everytime you search for that movie you get the song instead or a different japanese movie that is called wish upon a star so quite similar but the thriller one was from a japanese film festival in Hamburg i believe or somewhere in Germany
