this and DWB are my two all time favorite beach Boy records. For me , WIBN is the ultimate BB tune: great arrangement, lyrics, music and those harmonies, man outasight.
on the Leid in Hawaii rehearsal Brian makes an attempt to sing it but hits a flat note and stops. Mike, being ever supportive says "Al usually sings it on stage". It almost felt like Brian hit that bad note on purpose so he wouldn't have to sing it
I think he did 3 layers. This first cut being most legato, and each next layer more staccato, with gentle attack and release so to feather the layers together. Brilliant.
Brian had a very unique vocal range if you ask me. It’s a shame it’s not known as much like; Freddy Mercury or Michael Jackson. Brian’s vocal range and falsetto is really unique in the sense that it somehow had this ‘rough edge’ instead of a very smooth, feminine falsetto.
Or you could quit gaslighting yourself decide to embrace the bizarrely controversial view that Brian was actually that good and obviously the best singer in the band
@@littled6698 This is Al Jardine, Dude. You Beach Boys devotees are really rather stupid if you think this was sung by Brian Wilson. Look it up, Dude, Bro, whatever.
Epic. a testament to his genius how he changed a simple folk song into the finest production of the 60s. Sloop John B is the most underrated song of all time :)
Amazing how much of a difference something as simple as doubling vocals or adding a little reverb can do for a song. Very neat little gem here peeling back the layers a bit.
Brian Wilson on piano. Mike love had nothing to do with the song whatsoever. Brian wrote it for a group called Redwood, which later became 3 dog night. One of the lead singers in Redwood was Danny Hutton, who was Brian's best friend and his catchphrase was to call everybody darling. When Mike walked into the studio, when Redwood was recording the song, he was ticked off that Brian was trying to use a song that he had written for another group and told Brian it belonged to The Beach Boys. This story was verified by Danny Hutton, Chuck negron, and Steve Desper.
The song "Thinkin' Bout You Baby" by Sharon Marie. It is Darlin' produced back in 1964 and written by Brian and Mike. Mike is a dickbag, but yes, Brian reworked that song and was giving it to Redwood until The Beach Boys took it away along with "Time To get Alone". ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WzRd53KI120.html
Yeah, the master tape of Redwood - Darling. Yeah. Can we please not change the subject. Did they really record this or were the sessions interrupted by angry and upset beach boys? If Danny Hutton and friends performed this in late '67 the vocals must have been much, much rougher. Who else played in this session? I'd like to know and hear. It seems like an ultimate painful and decisive moment in BB history. So painful that an official release is still impossible. Mark Linett, are you there??
Written by Brian Wilson and Mike Love...so we can safely assume Love had something to do with this song in terms of lyrical content. The WILD HONEY album was largely written by Brian w Mike.
@@birgitfouts342 don't assume. The song was written by Brian in 1964 for a singer named Sharon Marie and was originally titled "Thinking About You." She recorded this song well before the BB recorded Darlin.' Singer Danny Hutton was Brian's best friend in the mid 60s and wanted to form a singing group. He, Corey Wells and Chuck Negron formed a group called Redwood and asked Brian to produce them. Now Danny had a habit of calling everyone Darlin. Brian picked up on that phrase and reworked the lyrics to what we now know as Darlin. Redwood recorded Darlin before the production of the Wild Honey album. According to Chuck Britz, Danny and Chuck, during the recording, Mike barged into the studio with an embarrassed and apologetic Carl and Dennis and ordered Brian to stop recording. Brian cowered and acquiesced to Mike who still had not forgotten Brian giving Surf City to Jan and Dean in 1964. Redwood left the studio not wanting to get involved in the BB internal fights. They of course renamed their group 3 Dog Night. You can find, on You Tube, Redwood singing Darlin as well as Danny Huttons interview about it. Be warned, the interview is broken into 13 or 15 parts and I now forget which part he told the story. Mike tells the tale that HE went into the studio to hear Redwood and gleefully says Brian told them they were not good singers and would never make it. Mike ends the version laughing about Brian's lack of knowing talent. So....never assume.
