A Renaissance commentator, I think a Spaniard, wrote after visiting Scotland that there were two types of Scots. One type in the mountains who were somewhat barbarous and spoke a strange language, and a more civil kind who lived in cities and towns and spoke a language akin to English.
"Red Harlaw" has often been viewed as the biggest clash between Gaelic-speaking Highland Scotland, mostly from Clan MacDonald, and levies from Lowland Scotland commanded by the Earl of Mar. Hundreds were killed on both sides.
An' came ye frae the hielands, man An' came ye all the way Saw ye MacDonald and his men As they come in frae Skye? . An' came ye near and near enuch Did ye their number see? Come tell to me, John Hielanman What mecht their numbers be? . As I cam in by the Gari?? land An' doon by Netherha', An' I saw MacDonald and his men A'marchin' tae Harlaw. . An' I come near and near enuch An' I their number saw: There were forty thoosand Hielanmen, A-marchin' tae Harlaw. . The Hielanmen wi' their lang swords Laid doon on us fu' sair; And they drove back oor lowland men Three acres breadth an' mair. . Lord Forbes tae his brither did say "Loo brither, dinna ye see? They drive us back on ilka side, And we'll be forced tae flee". . O na, na, na, my brither dear, This thing it maunna be Ye'll tak' your guid sword in yer hand An' ye'll gang in wi' me". . An' back tae back the brithers brave Gaed in amang the thrang; And they struck doon the Hielanmen Wi' swords baith sharp an' lang. . The first blow that lord Forbes strack, The sword ran in a ???nell The second blow that Forbes strack, The great MacDonald fell. . Sic a cry frae among the Hielanmen When they seed their leader fa', They carrd'ed?? him an buried him A lang mile frae Harlaw. . Gin onyoon should speir at ye For them that's gaed awa', Just tell them plain an' dunca?? plain They're sleepin' at Harlaw. (Not my lyric translation but I’m too lazy to correct it so it’s good enough)
If you were to break in my house Harlaw would play on full volume on PA speakers in the pitch black while I draw a claymore and light off three 4lb cannons double powdered and filled with grape shot demolishing the home and all the homes on the block.
"liberation, common sense and self respect". good luck with that. while there's two scotsman left on earth there'll be a quarrel. some great songs have emerged from the slaughter though.
Unfortunate that we went around battling it with one another. This must end. The Scottish people must unite under the banner of liberation, common sense and self respect.
Read the roll of honour for Ireland’s bravest men We must be united in memory of the 10 England you're a monster, don't think that you have won We will never be defeated while Ireland has such sons In those dreary H-Block cages ten brave young Irishmen lay Hungering for justice as their young lives ebbed away, For their rights as Irish soldiers and to free their native land They stood beside their leader - the gallant Bobby Sands Read the roll of honour for Ireland's bravest men We must be united in memory of the ten, England you're a monster, don't think that you have won We will never be defeated while Ireland has such sons Now they mourn Hughes in Bellaghy, Ray McCreesh in Armagh's hills In those narrow streets of Derry they miss O'Hara still, They so proudly gave their young lives to break Britannia's hold Their names will be remembered as history unfolds Read the roll of honour for Ireland's bravest men We must be united in memory of the ten, England you're a monster, don't think that you have won We will never be defeated while Ireland has such sons Through the war torn streets of Ulster the black flags did sadly sway To salute ten Irish martyrs the bravest of the brave, Joe McDonnell, Martin Hurson, Kevin Lynch, Kieran Doherty They gave their lives for freedom with Thomas McElwee Michael Devine from Derry you were the last to die With your nine brave companions with the martyred dead you lie Your souls cry out "Remember, our deaths were not in vain. My family' came to North America about 100 years ago. It's cool to know there are still some of us in the Old Country too. I don't look very Scottish but my brother is a blue eyed redhead.
There shall be no peace until Ireland is united as a 32 county socialist republic. Glory to the ten, glory to all those who gave their lives in the name of Irish and Human liberation.
@@PotterPossum1989 I'm not certain. I looked into it there, having never heard of them before. Honestly I ain't sure. I think that either this party is lying about their policies or Americans don't understand what socialism is and think all socialists are Nazis. I am far from good at understanding politics and maybe Americans are right, but either way I think the comment should be "There shall be no peace until Ireland is united as a 32 county republic". I already said I don't understand politics, nor do I care for it as something I would like to understand, but I do want Ireland to be a 32 county republic.
Michael Harper 1) it’s Alba gu bràth 2) this song is about men from Aberdeenshire and the Northeast pushing back men from the Islands and western Highlands, the nobility of Ross-shire (who were highlanders too) were in support of the Aberdonians. 3) the battle was one of the bloodiest in Scotland’s history and neither side was particularly pleased with the outcome but it is again considered a strategic victory for the Earldom of Mar as Aberdeen was saved from destruction.
Talorc MacAllan aye, I dinna like half the comments I used to put here on RU-vid, even a few months ago I was a bit of an arse. Fine tae meet a fellow pict, mind you there’s mair than that one gene, that’s just one that’s completely unique to Picts, most of us in the north east have the Brythonic blood that comes from the ancient Picts.
