Hello, I’m John Bangay and welcome to my website. Here you will find most of my drawings and watercolours of some of England’s most famous preserved historic buildings, as well as a growing number of videos about some of these famous places I have drawn and painted.

I like to make detailed drawings, using a traditional ink pen technique and I try to make sure that the particular architectural quality of the building is shown as clearly as possible, even if it sometimes means removing other foreground buildings or trees. My watercolours are generally softer and more impressionistic.

The history of these great buildings has always fascinated me and I hope you will find my video stories and printed descriptions informative and entertaining. You will find details of where you can purchase my pictures on several of the catalogue pages on my website www.englishheritageartist.co.uk

While on a choir tour in 1970 I spent an evening locked in this magnificent cathedral all alone practicing on the organ for Evensong the next day. As I played Franck's 3rd Choral a storm came up and lightning flashed through the stained glass windows. A once in a lifetime experience!

If Stamford was in the Cotswolds it would be ruined. Luckily, even in 2024, it is still just a gorgeous market town. Thank goodness.

it is so hard to tell what is medieval and what is later, early modern or modern additions. that is unfortunate, since most everything grand in UK turn out to be Victorian "reconstruction" or simple construction based on myths (150 years old)

Thankyou John. very interesting But churches and cathedrals were built by the poor, payed for by the poor so the rich could indulge. Nothing has changed and Norwich public are still probably paying for its upkeep . While as then and today people are still paying high rent on there housing. No wonder they rioted.

Visiting this beautiful cathedral is on my bucket list. The up close camera work showing the exquisite details wrought in stone was much appreciated. I’m always amazed when I see the fantastic handiwork of medieval artisans and stone masons who created such breathtaking beauty without the use of power tools or safety equipment! Your taste in music is excellent. (I’m a professional musician and have performed all of the pieces of music featured in this video.) Thank you for the lovely and informative tour of the cathedral.

Story of Belvoir told wonderfully and with a sense of humor... beautiful scenery and photography .... I never get tired of looking at this castle and its interiors and grounds. Lady Emma is so fortunate to live there...she has done a beautiful job promoting the castle

7:46.. I don't know if the duchess was fabricating or not when she said she couldn't remember for whom it was they widened the hallway walls that go to the bathroom... she did say something like it may have actually been Henry the 8th. Surely she would know the difference between Henry the 8th and Victoria's son Edward VII... unless it was an honest mistake ? So many of the rooms here are simply gorgeous... the bedrooms , the Chinese rooms , the Regents gallery...superb. .
