Why Didn't They Ask Evans? was the first Agatha Christie novel I ever read, and it really stuck with me. I think it's why most of my favourite Christies are standalone ones with a romantic subplot. This, They Came to Baghdad and The Man in the Brown Suit.
Thank you for continuing to confirm I shall never be a horror reader. But I am bummed to remove When Grumpy Met Sunshine from my TBR. I don’t read self esteem issues romances almost ever anymore. No ones got time for that nonsense.
If it makes you feel any better, I've never been able to finish watching The Exorcist. Like, I've seen the "big important culturally relevant" stuff. But trying to watch it from the beginning? I get maybe 10 minutes in before I'm unconscious.
I was thinking about reading The Exorcist, but those little snippets you read got on my nerves. Maybe it's not a good idea to dive in, after all. Great video, as always (loved the costume)
oooooh yeahhhhhh... this is affirming my decision not to read the exorcist (did see the movie when I was a kid :P because was a kid in a post-communist country and parents didn't understand about parental guidance, except for sex stuff, ofc) especially since it's such a reactionary story about the dissolution of the nuclear family - the possessed girl's mother is a single mom and an actress to boot, in the 80s... damn women shouldn't work outside the home, cause their kids will be possessed and oddly sexual and the body of this 'pure' girl will be spoiled and such. that kind of sentiment. rant over! decided to remove when grumpy met sunshine off my TBR because I just can't deal with that kind of self-esteem issue in my romance. even though the werewolf stuff sounds funny and messy (the sentient microwave!) Am left with very much wanting to read more of Nat Cassidy's books. and I have a friend in Berlin who is also reading Empusium now and were a bit obsessed with it, lol. But they just loooove Polish literature haha :) Great fun as ever, keeping my fingers crossed for you to cross the finish line, you got it, Ashley! Also, cute hat! I had a difficult 24 hours trying to decide what next to read on my kindle and couldn't, so I just jumped into Gideon the Ninth (again!), cause my bestie had found me a second hand illumicrate copy with black edges signed by Muir! (btw, do you know that you're born on the same day? I found out recently :D)
Tamsyn and I were born on the exact same day??!? I want to be friends with her!!! 😭 That's so funny you mention that about the dissolution of the nuclear family bit, etc. etc. because I think I might have disliked the book anyway even if I liked the writing style. I have disliked every exorcism/possession horror that I have tried, even the Grady Hendrix one, because I really do not like the feeling of reading about stable relationships being corrupted like that. Also, I hated the writing style so much in this one that I couldn't do any sort of actual analysis/criticism of the story implications, so I'm glad you're here for that lol. I can't wait to hear what you have to say about Nestlings and Rest Stop.
@@theanswerisbooks have you read Goddess of Filth? I feel like it's upending every exorcism / demonic possession trope. Also, Come Closer is really good in the subgenre!
Ooh I added Lay Them to Rest on my tbr! It sounds super interesting, and the cover is a pretty color haha! I can't wait to read Rest Stop. I read Mary a few months ago, and I loved everything about it. I'm hoping to read Nestlings soon 😊 I'm also interested to see how you plan your tbr! I'm a mood reader, so it's hard for me to plan in advance 😅
I love the cover for Lay Them To Rest! I do a TBR to please my OCD and Autism but then I also mood read in between. It's the only thing that works for me!
Honestly, not horrible, it's well written! But you have to be able to not like the characters, or I guess like that type of character? Which I obviously don't. I do recommend reading any of her other books over that one.
Yes! Definitely do a video about your process for chosing your tbr. The Exorcist sounds really annoying. I would have dnfed because of the writing. I’m interested in Why Didn’t They Ask Evans and The Night Guest. Nat Cassidy is on my priority tbr. Which one should I start with? Good luck on your challenge :) 👹
Haha okay. Confession, though. I already have my TBR through March, so it probably won't be until like January that I'm ready to do April. HOKAY SO. What are you in the mood for? MARY has bugs, ghosts, unreliable narrators, and commentary on misogyny. NESTLINGS has bitemarks on the baby, homages to NYC and Rosemary's Baby, and commentary on being an outsider, motherhood, and disability. REST STOP is gory and existential.
@@theanswerisbooks probably not Nestlings because I try to read the original/inspiration before and that’s one more book on my tbr, but I would be in the mood for the other two. I’ll try to see if I can get them from my library. Thank you!
I still very fondly remember The Woman in White, which I think I may have read back when I was at University, half a life ago. It was a long-ass time, certainly. If you recommend the audio, I might get it. I'm on 5 Audible credits now and it's not like they'll let me hoard more than 6 anyway. I like re-reading books in audio, especially classics. 🐊🍄
Nothing to say about this set of books, but I finished Some Desperate Glory yesterday, and I 100% agree with your assessment of the cringiness of the hair-touching scene at the end. BIG yikes. Otherwise it was an interesting examination of fascism.
Ughhh that scene. And the book was so good otherwise! It's like the book let out a smelly fart. That's how I feel emotionally about that scene, like it's embarrassing.
🍄🐊 I get sad sometimes that I'm already subscribed to your channel because I can't see the button glowing anymore, but that's just a me thing I guess. I'm here for the chaos as always. lol
yayyyy, well done on catching up and also working with stupid depression and stupid anxiety (sending hugs for that, since I am dealing with that bullshirt as well!). And I'm super glad you loved Mary, I also rated it five stars! Also also I had 6 5-star books in my last 9 reads?! which seems to be my best reading stretch of the year! So yay for us, hope we keep it going :D I should read Never Whistle at Night as well, I bought a second hand copy last year so maybe the time is now. if you like The Death I Gave Him, I'll read it as well, cause reviews seem mixed. The Peg and Rose book sounds nice, but like... I usually have trouble with cozy mysteries (except for Vera Wong, so maybe I like reading about old people too?). But I really trust your tastes so I might give it a go! Thanks for another fun video, you are definitely my favorite booktuber at this point ;)
I'm so sick of my brain. One second I'm fine and the next every muscle in my body is tense and my brain feels like a bag of cats, but I also I feel very blaahhhhh and don't want to do anything. It's so stupid, I hate it. 6/9 is a wild number! Hopefully it will soon be 7/10 once you finish Someone You Can Build a Nest In 🤓 I know it has all the hallmarks of a cozy mystery objectively, but Vera Wong always feels outside of the genre for me. Maybe I'm just being snobby bc it's so well written. Peg and Rose is definitely a true cozy mystery. I just thought it was really well done!
@@theanswerisbooks a bag of cats - that's a good way to call my brain as well, it's been just too much so I deeply relate and empathize with you. sending huuuugs!
@@ruplayinggame3080 yyyaay for anxiety >.> I was reticent to take anything for mine, as I was like "no, I can find ways to deal with it that don't involve meds!" Turns out I couldn't though ^^;
🍄 I read Graveyard Shift the week it came out and also gave it 4 stars. I don’t know if I want to read If We Were Villains because I’ve never read Shakespeare and wouldn’t get the references. I gave Kingdom of the Wicked 4 stars when I read it years ago but I was a teenager back then and my taste has changed a lot since. I would not continue the series or reread it. I’ve had a pretty good month for five stars. I had two in October so far (!): Any Man by Amber Tamblyn and Bloom by Delilah S. Dawson. I usually have 5-7 five stars in a year so two in a month (and in a row) is extraordinary. I’m currently reading Misery and I have one story left in Eric Larocca’s Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke and Other Misfortunes. I also have Never Whistle at Night on my physical tbr so I might read it like you. I’m excited for your next video because you’re my comfort RU-vidr and I’m stressed because of midterms. Have a nice day! /gen
So I had fairly similar thoughts to Graveyard Shift. Zero expectations, but I really liked her writing style. I didn’t mind the horror aspects, but 100% agree it was too convenient and needed to be longer. I gave it 3 stars. I’d read more from her. I’m halfway through my TBR plus 40% through everyone on this train is a suspect (it’s fine, but I don’t think as good so far). And 3 hours into Evelyn Hardcastle. He just woke up. Again. I’m excited to listen through the rest on my commute this week. Also, finally you finished the woman in white!!! I know it makes me sound like a dick, but I really love mid-19th century literature. Those pedantic a-holes knew how to write.
I have liked a lot of Victorian stuff, but this one (probably bc it was considered trashy at the time) was really up my alley. I have to read more Wilkie Collins.
So great to see you with your friend, the whole video was so much fun. Mint chocolate chip is by far the best ice cream flavour, which makes it extra frustrating that it's almost impossible to get in Norway. If I do find it, it's only in very expensive places. I need to figure out how to make my own (I got an ice cream maker for my birthday). I am sensitive to peanuts, which is fine, I have never enjoyed the flavour. My son loves it, though. That Andrea Stewart book is absolutely gorgeous once you remove the dust cover.
Awesome to discover new horror content! Great List. I really need to re-read The Dark Half, especially after the way you described it to me. "If a woman wrote Stephen King" 😀 Love it and added to my tbr. IT is such an awesome coming of age novel. Stephen King is the master of character development, I recommend The Stand. I really need to read Grady Hendrix. I had mixed feelings about Last House On Needless Street, but did love your kitty cat walking backscreen. Will definitely read My Heart Is A Chainsaw next year. Hope you are having a great spooky season! 🎃🎃
I loved Mary, found it very entertaining and made me want to read more of Nat Cassidy. About Cujo... I read it as a teenager and 15 years later I was surprised because I couldn't remember the ending, so I decided to re read it. Big mistake. I got traumatised again 😂 I got this new book on the mail but I think I'll skip the Cujo sequel, thanks for the heads up 😂
you don't need to read cujo before that story in you like it darker. it really isn't a sequel, just contains characters from it, among others. i didn't read cujo and still enjoyed that story from you like it darker.
You can do it! Read all the books! I am halfway through my October TBR (first time I’ve ever made one!), but it’s only 4 books so tomato, tomato. I both kind of like a TBR, but also a short one like this so there’s room for me to mood read as needed.
@@theanswerisbooks not yet! That’s up after I finish my Brandon Sanderson novella. I’ve been reading the Skyward series, a book a month, since May. So once I finish that (tomorrow) I’ll move onto the Turton.
You can do it! I believe in you! yeah, I really really liked God of the Woods (especially since I didn't have any expectations about it - hadn't read the synopsis, which is something I tend to do). And the ending was quite satisfying. Very excited to see what you think of Mary, I loved it (and forgot to go back and write a review haha).
4 stars for me still means a good book. :) It means I enjoyed it overall. I have been seeing God of the Woods on BookTube a lot, so I may have to check it out at some point. I saw Mary in the bookstore last time I went, and it sounded intriguing, but I wanted to knock out the books I already owned lol.
