Kevin Kline rehearsed his scenes in a normal fashion like all the other actors. He didn't start doing all that outrageous shit until the cameras were rolling. No one knew he was going to do what he did with Otto. Everyone was taken by surprise. Cleese was genuine in his remark about Klines work in the film.
The thing is, they never stopped being funny. Being funny wasn't something done "professionally', at specific times; being funny was a way of life. And thank Goddess for that.
Dimbleby's end bit is also so deadpan. It's a way of pricking the balloon of awards ceremonies. Moore was twenty feet under Cleese's chin, and confessed they couldn't find his usual box to stand on 🤣! Cleese's list of thank yous has the audience in stitches. I'm watching this years later, and it's still funny 😂
