So glad I found it. Recorded it then on 1Live from the Radio to my PC. But years after HDD crashed & all was lost. Thannk you very much for bringing back such fond memory even it was only on radio....
“What you put into it is yourself. And what you get out of it is a reflection of that.” Now there are deep fakes. Back in the 80’s, there were fake deeps. 😂😂
This video is so funny because my friends and i still joke about how R.E.M. completely KILLED the vibe of the show with their performance at the Tibetan Freedom Festival. We had just seen Radiohead CRUSH the OK Computer ragers, it was about 100 degrees, the day before had been canceled due to a fan being struck by lightning, and then right in the middle of a party atmosphere trots R.E.M. with the mellowest batch of tunes in their catalog. To say they bombed would be an understatement.
To say they bombed would be a huge matter of opinion. It's interesting because the mainstream eventually found REM. They held their line and by the late 90's, mainstream had moved on to Brittany, N'Sync and Backstreet Boys. Pop music has been dead for more than 20 years now. I'm still on line with REM and other "underground" music. REM was never a greatest hits band. Thankfully. It's all about moving forward (or, Up). So if they "bombed," I think there's a verdict in there.
@@derrickmartin8390 In the context of the actual show it was a total disaster, unanimously so among the people in the crowd, almost to the point of jeers and boos. I'm a huge R.E.M. fan and have even met and partied with Michael Stipe. But i was there and I saw what I saw. Obviously the band had the same experience on their end. Their "sound" was not in the slightest degree ready for a near 100,000 general admission crowd on a Sunday afternoon in an oversold stadium. Now, the previous evening secret show at 9:30 Club with Pearl Jam, Radiohead and Red Hot Chili Peppers on the other hand . . . .
Totally fair. And anyone who was booing REM would likely refer to Losing My Religion as their "early stuff." I appreciate the fact that REM would do what they do rather than pander to 100,000 people (not all of them, obviously) who just want to hear "Stand." I've never counted them as a U2, Stones arena band on that level. So that kind of venue is not their natural environ anyways. I grew up with Chronic Town, Murmur, Reckoning, etc. This band was behind the trajectory of my life. So I get a bit defensive when people bash them. If people don't like them, that's fine. But booing them at a benefit concert is pretty ignorant and classless.
Guys from the South. Self-deprecating. Not trying to impress anyone through the interview. Not cursing like so many rock stars do. Just being themselves, doing their thing, having fun, making people happy. Thanks, guys, for so much wonderful music. 👊🏼
Best performance of Lotus, period. I remember seeing this on Conan and it was enough to get me to buy "Up". Too bad the album version is so flat and lifeless.
