One thing I wished I knew was to never draw on my students drawings, then if they say its okay. It often makes them feel as if the art isnt theirs or insulted. They would often tell me it was okay but thats because I was an authority figure and they felt obligated to say yes. -Thanks!
I second this!!!! I have been 10 year old teacher and the most important thing is relationship with them, when you do that, its not only easier to manage your class, they actually would LOVE to be there and be able to teach in a wonderful way. Of course no class is perfect no day is SUPER perfect. You will have hard classes and challenging students but even those, once you make a relationship you will be well! 😊 Best of luck!
It will depend on your grade level, class period length, size of artwork, and many other components! Feel free to reach out to Renae to see what worked for her via her social platform, linked in the description box!
I am ordering those restaurant condiment/paint pour containers! Love the homemade watercolor palettes too, putting that idea in my toolbox. Will also try the canvas wrapped boards...I have also seen Art teachers use the backside of (dollar store) place mats (dinner table place mats) used to keep tables clean from clay (for the littles). Thank you this art teacher videos of life hacks was awesome!
I'm obsessed with this video. As an artist, personally, I was making work out of cardboard and it enabled me to free up my own creativity because the material wasn't so precious like porcelain and other clays i used to work with. I just got a job teaching prek-8 art and I want to bring the joy of cardboard and recycled materials into my classrooms. This is awesome inspiration. Thanks!
I'm thinking of becoming an art teacher either elementary or highschool after high school and I'm stuck on what schooling or college and or certifications or training I need?
Wonderful! Being an art teacher is the BEST! You will most likely need a K-12 certification in art education. There are many undergraduate art education programs you can enter. Ask your potential colleges and universities if they have an art education program!
Ohh I have worked as art teacher in school for 4 years before starting my own art studio and sometimes I really miss teaching in school setting ❤ love your class 😊
Such a wonderful message. Faith Ringgold is one of my favorite artists too! <3 I became a teaching artist at 62. And have been teaching 6-12 yrs olds for the last 3 years. LOVE IT.
Student led discussions are my absolute least favorite thing I’ve ever had to do in college. I understand it actually gets students involved, but we’re paying you to teach us not the other way around
I start back with teaching 4 different types of art classes tomorrow at a fine arts academy. I came across your video by accident. Love your perspective, it’s very encouraging. Hope you have a good year. Happy art-ing!
Keeping it Real, I wish everyone would watch this to see what our days are like as art teachers. so much to do and so much on our minds on how to help our students .
I've been in 2 schools the past 16 years. Currently I proposed I'd do one show a year, in the Spring. So my buildings have biannual shows. I don't feel guilty one bit because of the stress two was putting on me. If it was stressing me out 15 years in as much as one year in, I decided it must me too much. Admin and PTA have been fine with it. I noticed last year, wuth only doing one show, it was of better quality and I coukd breathe. It was so nice.
We're so glad you are able to pace yourself and still put on a quality show! Hope you get some new tips and tricks from this series to make your load even easier!
This was very helpful! I grew up in Vietnam so most people in my art classes have features that can be describe with similar words (not that they looked similar, just there are lots of word overlap like straight hair, monolids,...) or drawn similarly. I'd like to be an art teacher in the country I live now, with a more diverse population. But because of my childhood I don't know how to approach a wide variety of features, so I'm trying to learn :)
In your experience, what are effective scaffolds for students with autism, ADHD, and/or motor skills challenges when they are engaging with printmaking for the first time?
That staircase is everything! Her rainbow style is so satisfying!!! Thanks for sharing. If I had infinate budget i would go a lil crazy!!! We just have these ugly chairs at my school.
That's from his district/school! You can reach out to Jon for more info; his social handle is in the beginning of the video and in the description box!
