I've seen a lot of positive reinforcement training with 'cookies' and the results were exactly that, POSITIVE. ...and positive to the point of no longer needing 'cookies' but additional positive attention as the reward instead. It works. Remember 'Monty' Roberts and 'Buck' Brannaman? Two, original "Horse Whisperers" whose core concepts of 'join-up' and positive reinforcement were ground-breaking.
From all that I have studied of Buck's work and he uses mostly fair R- (from what I've seen). He did not agree with using Positive Reinforcement in training (at least up to 2 years ago he didn't, I haven't followed up recently). He does give his horses pats and verbal praise after the behavior is achieved with an aversive. All pressure and release is by definition R-. Some use it more gently (Buck) than others but the motivation behind the horses behavior comes from an aversive. I still respect Buck and I think he is a fair horse trainer (from what I have seen), but these are different styles of training :)
You know I asked someone why they don't add positive reinforcement to their horse training... They said the time between the behavior and reward would be too long... Uh that's what markers are for (like a clicker) I use balanced dog training - which is mostly positive reinforcement. Even police and military k9 trainers use heavy positive reinforcement mostly these days. Why? Because the dogs are a lot less mean and are less likely to tag their handlers when you pay them. It's really hard to find an old fashioned yank and crank dog trainer these days who doesn't use any positive reinforcement - and that's for a damn good reason. Using all 4 quadrents makes for good relationships, clear communication, and happy animals. If you eliminate one quadrent, you lose all of that.
Not riding in general but each horse has a weight range they can carry. I think experts are saying now that a rider and tack shouldn’t exceed 15% of a horses body weight.
I'd love to see a round table/podcast style collab with you and Equine Helper. She just posted a video about gorse training styles she doesn't like, and one of them was R+. I'd love to see if you could convince her otherwise or even just find some common ground.
I’m a new subscriber, so I’m not super familiar with Xena, but I know the pain of losing pets and I’m crying with you!! And i totally get the closing a chapter thing, it’s so hard.
I use small apple flavored treats. Negative reinforcement-1 1/2 hours to get on the trailer. Positive reinforcement-10 minutes to get on the trailer. Rufus can do the math 😂
If by “Problem horses” you mean misunderstood horses, yes! But I’m not the only one. Positive reinforcement works for all types of animals, wild, traumatized, or young/blank slates included.
No, Randal, I mean Darla, she actually has never even seen a horse in her life. When she says "horse," she means dragons. Those clips of those dragons are what she has experience training. I'm going to have to sign up. My dragon never comes when I call 'im.
"And I wonder if you know how it really feels" applies to this one, as someone who can't afford to own a pony, or any sort of horse, really. It's heartbreaking to see people getting horses as if they were candy, and then there's us, who dream of owning one. This is sadly true, and it happens! There's a girl at my barn, who's like- WAY younger than me (about 5 years younger) and she owned such an amazing mare that is now used for lessons, her name is Agatha, and she's a bit sassy, but has some SERIOUS scoop and jumping with her is SO much fun. The thing is she sold her because she got a 'better' horse now (she calls it better because it's younger) and... yeah. It's very heartbreaking to see she sold one horse in very good conditions but a little bit of an older age (about 14-16), just for that last thing, while I personally dream of owning whatever kind of horse. Tell me I'm not the only one. 💔😭
I love your videos! Also Do you support furries and therians? And I just got back from my horse riding lesson! I’m going to be learning how to jump next term!
