Not a good idea to ride on the defensive that messes everything up. You guys should’ve done your homework first 😂. I’m glad you survived but please don’t try that again. I’m curious,where are you from? That bike your wife was riding looks so uncomfortable that seat needed raised

Absolute madness. No respect for anyone else. No rules, if there are rules, nobody follows the rules. Dangerous, absolutely. Cars, other bikers, trams, motorcycles, pedestrians all on their own agenda, stop lights that nobody respects, in other words, madness, just madness. Thanks for sharing this little bit of, you got it, madness. 👍👍👍

Haha the Van Woustraat.... Thats like one of the most challenging streets to cycle on in the entire country 🙂Trams from multiple directions. The tramtracks themselves, dont get your wheel stuck in those. Delivery vans. Annoying hasty rush hour locals. Pedestrians, especially the tourists are dangerous who occationally just step in to the bikelane without looking... And of course narrow and busy in general... Well, good job I guess! But as a local, slightly stressful to watch! However, you did one particular thing very well, intentionally or not. And that is not yielding to pedestrian crossings. I mean, you should, those are the rules, but local cyclists rarely do. Thats why the pedestrians in the video are slightly hesitant to just jump on the road. Its often like this fun minigame of chicken. The pedestrian puts a foot out clearly signalling that he intents to cross, but not fully committing to it. Then its up to the cyclist to pretty much do with this information as he pleases. And mostly its to completely ignore it and just go. Which you guys did what I can respect. Takes some guts but there you go. Also bonus points for agressively using you bell to shoo tourists away who just happen to walk in the middle of the road. Another one of my favorite cycling through Amsterdam "minigames". I think the comment section is a bit undeservedly critical for these reason, again, well done!

Don't cycle if you can't cycle. You only annoy the people who do know how to ride a bike.

Maybe it would have been better to really learn how to ride a bike and master the traffic rules (written and unwritten) before moving through the 19th century and older parts of the city of Amsterdam. For me it was nice to see the streets from my childhood again, so thank you for that.

Clearly we are tourists that didn’t know what we were doing, along with a lot of other tourists that do the same. Fortunately we made it without any injuries. We had a great time and would do it all over again and would better understand the rules next time. Learning by doing is the best approach, and I’m happy that the video offered some entertainment and enjoyment for you.

OMG these are literally the worst parts to cycle in Amsterdam, I avoid them as much as possible 😅 Btw, "not just bikes" has the ranking and it agrees with me, as far as I remember.

If you didn't grow up in the system it's dangerous to flout the rules like that (running red lights, going the wrong way down one way roads, cycling in pedestrian areas, etc.). I always advise foreigners to stick to the rules, even if you see the locals break them. They have a lifetime of experience knowing when it's safe to do that (or they aren't locals and are acting just as dangerously). You could get hurt, or hurt someone else.

@@urbandiscount Thankfully people have been forgiving of me my entire life. I'm one of many tourist that make this choice on a daily basis. It appears the city should require bike rental companies to provide in depth course and details on rules that tourists don't know. I just picked up the bike and wasn't provided any details about rules. The city should also invest in policing the environment to ticket ignorant tourists like myself; because, when I return, I'll do it all over again :)
@captainchaos3667
@captainchaos3667 Месяц назад
@@TaylorTribble What an obnoxious attitude. It's the responsibility of a visitor to a foreign country to familiarise themselves with the rules. That doesn't really require an in depth course, a single RU-vid video will do. Would you have the same attitude when renting a car? "Oh well the rental company didn't tell me about maximum speeds or which side of the road to drive on or where I can drive, so I'll just blast everywhere I want in a straight line, other road users be damned! Blame the city for not stopping me!"

@@captainchaos3667 I would welcome your constructive instructional video guide on tips and tricks for safely riding bikes in Amsterdam with a focus on common mistakes that tourists make, but I don't notice any videos on your channel. When it comes to driving, I took a 6 months required course to learn the rules because our government knows that these courses are in the best interest of the citezens. The roads are also policed and tickets are given out when breaking the rules. As I mentioned, I was with my wife and 3 daughters and would never knowingly put them in danger. What you saw was a 20 minute video; we rode bikes for a total of 5 hours around Amsterdam during our stay and not once did anyone tell us that we were doing anything wrong. If you care so deeply about the safety of tourists and citizens riding bikes in Amsterdam, please get to work on the video guide and share it with me; I'd gladly take your safety tips next time I'm riding in Amsterdam.

Maybe when you stop at a traffic light, actually stop BEFORE the crossing, not in the middle of the it.

Thank you for watching and commenting on my video. This sounds like a training issue. Maybe the city should require bike rental companies to provide in depth details on rules.
