Todays service was longer than usual, but we had Coralie share of her partnership with the church with the work with disabled, and Holy Communion too I loved every part. She and Princess Margaret used to sing a descant to the Crimond tune together as girls. Major royal services are an opportunity to remind the world of the great traditional hymns which the Queen loved, especially with a cathedral organ and choir leading a large congregation. "The day thou gavest" is especially appropriate for a royal funeral because of the reminder that the Kingdom of God, unlike the earth's empires, is eternal. When the hymn was written, the Empire of Queen Victoria must have seemed untouchable, but it has, like others in their time, passed away as its member nations progressed to independence. The late Queen was of course keen to promote the Commonwealth, as a way of keeping that family together in a new relationship which respected that progression.
