It's far better than 'interesting' but rather 'fantastic!' Where such historical detail was obtained from is fascinating. The only detail I would like to supplement is that relating to cinemas as Ilkeston actually has a far more interesting history. Of course cinemas were pre-dated by theatres, so I will briefly also mention such. During pre-television days both theatres and cinemas formed a major part of social life so were far more important than nowadays. Going back to 1895 there existed a wooden building known as the 'Theatre Royal' in Rutland Street. And possibly other theatres which I have not heard of? That changed to 'Vints Picturedrome' which relocated and then operated from a building in Lord Haddon Road between 1911 and 1916. Vints changed into 'The Coliseum' for the period 1916-1927, and then during 1927 to 1930 back to being the 'Theatre Royal.' In 1931 Theatre Royal changed again, this time to the 'New Theatre,' but still operating from Lord Haddon Road. And owned by one of my forebears. Moving on to the 'Scala,' which most historians wrongly believe to be Ilkeston's oldest cinema, that began in 1913. The Scala did immensely well to survive. Although massively popular in the 1960s that era saw Ilkeston's youth enjoy a new found hobby of cinema seat slashing. The lovely Scala cinema fared extremely badly. Tripping back a while, King's opened in 1915 and the Ritz in 1938. There was actually a fifth cinema in Ilkeston in the 1950s (possibly lasting into the 60s) which someone mentioned to me years ago, but I can find no trace on the internet and alas large parts of my memory have crumbled simply due to old age. I record the above before even more goes. Sorry.

Quite interesting....I lived in Ilkeston during the fifties...My parents ran a decorating shop on Bath St and we lived in the flat above...Opposite was "Chambers", a fruit and veg shop, The Midland Bank (now HSBC)....Next door was "Curry's" electrical, then "Shentalls", a grocery shop, and further down Bath St was "Tony's" coffee shop. Always full of steam and the smell of fresh bread....Our back yard was shared with next door, a ladies underwear (and assorted things) shop called Knowles. In their extensive sheds stood a brand new Austin Somerset which was never used....My first school was Chaucer St, now a housing development, then Hallcroft, now a ring road...I returned during the late sixties to manage the old Tesco store before moving on to better things.....In those days, Bath St was heaving with shoppers....Very different now I think....Very sad.

Wasn't it Knowles then the Wall Paper Store, Curry's, Ferrands then the Prince of Wales and Godbers Butchers on the corner of Chapel Street. The butchers and the Prince of Wales were later demolished and replaced with Burtons Suoermarket.

@@andysanders4861 Hi....No.....The original shop of my parents was called "Turners" and around 1952 he sold out to Wallpaper Manufacturers LTD who's retail arm traded under the "Crown Wallpapers" name when my parents took over the management......Knowles was the shop next door (uphill) and the owners lived in the accomodation upstairs. We had no TV but they had one in their back room and together with their two daughters I used to watch the early evening childrens hour. I remember the butchers and being fascinated with the butcher who always had a cigarette in his mouth! You are probably right about Farrands. Shentalls was the parent business I think. Burtons quickly became Fine Fare.

That's cleared a few Puzzles up for us. The "Walkway" at side of Market always confused me. So it was a sort of platform for a kind of Town Crier set up>? If so I have fresh bewilderment.. why wouldn't the Public Addresses be done from the Balcony of the Town Hall?

The borough used to be called, "New Inn"? I can just imagine everyone calling them, "The New New Inn", and the "Owd New Inn"!
