Welcome to General Effect Media! We offer content made by Performing Arts Die-Hards for Performing Arts Die-Hards. GEM was founded to give you access to all of the information that you could ever dream of about the performing arts, whether it’s scores, recaps, stats, analysis, or rankings put together by our hand-selected team of experts. We’re also here to offer you on-the-spot analysis of performances, deep-dive articles, editorials, and breaking news as it happens.
For years, the Performing Arts, whether it’s DCI, BOA, WGI, State Band Circuits, or any other organization that showcases and celebrates the great shows and great performers we all know and love, has lacked a central gathering space for performers, staff, and fans to stay informed, entertained, and engaged. You deserve nonstop coverage from the first corps at DCI Tour Premiere in June until retreat at WGI Finals in April, and we’re here every step of the way.
Has Broken Arrow been ranked based on this year’s performances or are all predictions still based off of last year’s? I’m pretty sure there’s no publicly available videos of their performances this year, but there might be a video out somewhere that the General Effect Media team has.
The last time Broken Arrow competed in St. Louis and did not win was 2006...however they did end up winning their first ever Grand National Championship the following month!
You guys are still sleeping on South Jones High School Marching Braves!? They took Best Overall on 12 Oct, 2024, at the Neshoba Central HS Rocket Invitational in Mississippi, and will compete to be MHSAA 5A STATE champions for the FIFTH consecutive time, on 26 October... with "Where Elenore Belongs". Word is, they're planning for Indy! Has GEM forgotten these guys have already gone.to Daytona for WGI shenannigans!? Just wondering.
@@AnthonyGidley And, I can guarantee you, Tate High out of Florida, didn't expect a 155 member group from Ellisville, MS to win BOA Southeast Regionals last year in Troy, Alabama, but.... it happened. Dayton, OH, last year for Winter Guard, and placed; 4x 5A MSHAA Division Champs, and 30 years of Awards prior to!? I'll keep you posted. This is a feeder program for Southern Miss, Jones College... WCU, and other colleges in the region. They have a blast, but they WORK, too. Blend and Balanced like a good cuppa coffee. 👍
@@RaincloudmusicTFS6 alright, I’ll be honest, I hadn’t heard of their name until your post. I looked them up and was pleasantly surprised at how talented they are.
HOLY MOLY... Mr. MONTOYA... I haven't seen your face in 20 years...I remember you writing and working with the percussion for Bowie back in the day... Randomly started watching DCI videos and some HS videos recently (feeling a bit nostalgic) and boom here you are...
If Dripping Springs was as high as 5th in Visual GE, they would’ve placed 2nd overall. Kim Kuhn called the contest for Dripping Speings (but that makes sense because she’s very smart).
Lafayette has won Johnson City 2/3 times they’ve attended, yet they haven’t been to grand nationals since 2010. They’re a sleeper potential finalist at GN if they attend, especially if they were going this year
Thank you for covering high school band!! Sorry to point out errors, but Rivercrest was at 2A state contest while Redwater and Atlanta were at 3A state contest. You had them a division higher than they are. Btw, if you make it up to Lindale Texas on November 2nd for UIL Area C 4A contest, I’ll be there too!!
Meanwhile, in the Southeast Region... South Jones High School, Marching Band of Braves, (last year's BOA Southeast Regional Winner), took 1st Over All at the Rocket Invitational in Philadelphia, MS, at Neshoba Central HS, with their show, "Where Elenore Belongs". West Jones HS Marching Mustangs also showed up, and showed out! Don't Sleep on South Jones High School!
I’m sorry Danny, I should have sent the results from the Winnsboro contest last year. If I remember correctly, Atlanta won, Redwater was second and PG was third, but I’ve slept a lot since then. And unfortunately PG hasn’t been to the state contest in a while. Two years ago they were a point away, and last year they were in a three way tie for fourth and only five bands advanced. (PG band dad reporting) I really appreciate you putting us in the videos and all you’re doing for the best kids in the world, band kids.
Also (and apologies for a second comment but not actually sorry because #algorithm), I know we’re in the thick of college football season, but the layout of the bracket actually made more sense to me when I compared it to the NCAA Basketball Tournament (or any of the conference tournaments with byes and oddly-shaped brackets). There are a certain number of auto-qualifiers to represent all conferences, filled out by at-large bids. When it comes to seeding, whether you are an auto-bid or at-large matters not. Also, the distribution of at-large bids across the conferences doesn’t matter. Alright, I’ll stop nerding out…for now….
If the rankings are already subjective then what's the point of the bracket? Would everyone just assume the higher ranked seed would win each bracket or are there chances of upsets (like how unranked Vanderbilt beat #1 Alabama in football) and how would upsets be determined?
Kiskis going to likely win their second regional this week in Delaware. It’s too bad they aren’t going to Natl this year, they won class 2A and 16th overall last year, getting closer and closer to being a top 12 national qualifier again like they were in the 90s and 2000s. Do you think Vandegrift has the goods to compete with Carmel and Avon at grand ntl this year?
@@GeneralEffectMedia oh dang I guess I just assumed they were due since they didn’t attend last year either. It Would’ve been awesome to see them there!
I finally understand the bracket concept now. Last week I thought y’all were going to whittle the bracket down based on show performances. That seemed impossible. This is way more fun than just a list.
Please explain it to me. I don’t understand the playoff bracket, except the #1’s from each of the 7 areas are automatically on the bracket. How were the others decided to be on the top 20? In week 2, how did they decide to have X go up against X? The highest scores in the Nation that I saw was Hebron, followed by Flower Mound, Coppell, all from the same contest. How did they choose Vandy over Hebron for #1 in the Texas region? Why was Carmel ranked #1 over Avon in their region? Is there a criteria or are they pulling names out of a hat and saying, “GO!” I hope you can help me with this! Thanks.
@@eddietucker7005 I can't speak for TX bands, but Carmel beat Avon at this past weekend's ISSMA Regional so that's likely why Carmel got the #1 seed over Avon. This coming weekend's Indy Super Regional should be exciting with Carmel, Avon, Blue Springs, and William Mason attending plus all the IN schools competing for the 3-6 spots in Indiana (Fishers, Brownsburg, Homestead, and Castle).
No Daniel, it was not the TOP GUN show. And Aiden is correct….The William Mason 2022 show “Odyssey” is one of the most spectacularly beautiful shows I’ve ever seen!
The lack of clarity in DCI is destroying the sport. I predict BOA will compete with DCI and offer a summer program for professional DCI-level competition
Y'all gonna Sleep on South Jones HS Band of Braves in Week 1!? This MS juggernaut, who won BOA in Alabama last year, took Best Overall at Gautier last week (Oct, 2024!). You Snooze, you Loose. You're missing out! 😂❤ My money's on this group of Jones County kids!
