Beautifully observed! Birdie was rescued while we were shooting this and it quickly became obvious she loved to work and was more comfortable doing some actions than others. Both cats are still living their best life and Birdie has just finished on a feature film while Todd Rover stayed at the farm.
Love love love this! I see it so often with our really nervy (client) dogs where reinforcement delivery is so clearly important. Have been working with a kelpie recently who is terrified of traffic and unsurprisingly crazy for the tenis ball. She would refuse food from the hand but was happy to catch it in the air whilst under threshold. She threw me off one day when I couldn't find the tenis ball in my car and opted for a rubber ball - she was not impressed and did not want to touch it for a good while 😂 Perception and presentation is everything!
I start out on a hard and train the behaviour as you see in this video and then play around with the size and depth of curve etc. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZNNfoX71THM.htmlsi=e-NwzZvnJl5ivMeo
I am obsessed with this! Reminds me a bit of Tobias Gustavsson's training and how he uses the Kong as activation and then reinforcement in the search. Are we allowed to use mechanical markers in trials?
We can out here in Australia, you would have to check the organisation you are competing under. Its worked really well, in classes with multiple hides, as soon as I reduce the intensity of the pull it cues him to search again to start the game. I wanted him to understand that the game is contingent on source odour. We do games where he takes the toy to source odour which makes the game happen. So much learning on different levels. Love scent work.
Yes! You got it in one! That’s exactly what you see me do in this video. I rarely say “alert” in training, so when I was getting close to trialing I thought I should start to add it in and always wanted to make sure he understood it didn’t predict delivery of reinforcement. When I first said it though, it obviously sounded like “hello!” Or “who’s this?” Cause he ran to the front door barking his head off 😂😳.
LOL this makes me feel so much better about how my boxer is when I train him compared to my kelpie x staffy! And reminds me I need to be much more patient with him :)
This line up course is tough for Robin and I mentally but it’s teaching me so much more about the way he thinks. But 😂 I hear you. Training outside my comfort zone at the moment.
Hey a friend sent this to me. I live in Barraba north of Ta, Previouslymworth and am so keen to find some noseworks in Tamworth. Previously I commenced doing NW with Ultimate K9 on the Sunshine Coast. Fingers Crossed you can help xxx
How perfect you saw this! This was a trial on the weekend held by Oxley Dog Training Club and they are doing scent work classes at the club now. They did an awesome job hosting the trial and many of their members received passes in novice. Give them a call.
@@micheleizzard4039 I'm at Tingha and looking to start soon when my little one is eligible to join the club. I went to Tamworth on Sunday to spectate the higher levels and Peta was fantastic in her commentary & explanation of hides how scent works etc.
@@buzz.beebeagle7639 Thanks for being in touch. That's quite a way to travel. I'm looking forward to checking it all out. We haven't done the ORT (Odour Recognition Test) yet so will probs start again with Intro to Odour.
JRL3 God, if I had $1 for time I have heard that. I’m sure some trainers use food reduction as a motivating operator as part of their work, but I’ve always suggested the move away from it when I have come across it. In my experience a starving animal is more dangerous - if I am working free contact with a seal or elephant, I do not want them starving, or, like us when hungry, they can’t think properly so learning is inhibited. Much more sensible to provide access to quality nutrition and work animals for food treats and other reinforcers, either conditioned or unconditioned.
Love this! This is exactly how I started my own dog in none work ... although I only had one Q-tip with all three scents on the bottom of the bowl. It was a great start to creating a very dedicated alert signal.
