I have been fortunate to have many fellow fly fishers share their knowledge and experience with me over the years. It seems that I am constantly learning new things every time I interact with a fellow wielder of the long rod. This is my chance to give back and provide what I have gleaned of the years in a series of short videos that I hope you will enjoy.

The Umqua box...I've come to loath it. Dark colors so you can't see into the box. Tapered lid so you can't stack them. Difficult to place the flies.

I too enjoy using EP fibers. Question: how do you determine how much to use for this pattern (or any pattern for that matter)?
@ShortyOnTheFly
@ShortyOnTheFly Месяц назад
It is just a feel thing. Kind of like selecting deer hair. Wish I had a better answer but it just takes some trial and error and practice to get what you want.
@westsidewil

@@ShortyOnTheFly 1) what brand klinkhammer hook is that? 2) do you find poor durability using pheasant tail? Have you considered using a really thin wire or maybe EP fibers for the body?
@ShortyOnTheFly

@@westsidewil I use Saber hooks. I prefer using a material that will sink for the body. That way the EP fibers will suspend the whole thing like an emerging insect. Hope that helps.

I have done something similar and spent the last 7 years researching the best fly patterns from every source I can find! I have created several books where all the patterns are written down. I reviewed each and reduced the patterns down to the most essential which will catch Brown trout, sea run Brown trout, Brook trout, sea run Brook trout, Rainbow trout, Landlocked salmon and Atlantic salmon! These are the fresh water fish available where I live. Each pattern must be effective for many of these and some (a small number) will catch all or any! I am down to about 30 patterns at this point! I still have specific Atlantic Salmon patterns…the exception, at this point! It is a work in progress and may never be complete! I rarely fish dry flys as I found no need! Soft hackles, flymphs, wet flys, bucktails feather wing streamers and hair wing flys are what I use and on a good day can catch over 100 trout releasing most but keeping perhaps a 1/2 dozen for a meal! Trout are very abundant where I am and if anything overpopulated in many waters here so taking a few for the pan is not frowned upon and expected! If not done correctly, catch and release often kills the fish you caught, later and out of sight! I never touch any fish or remove it out of the water! I keep it in a soft mesh net and grip the hook with haemostats, a quick twist to free the hook and dip the net to let the fish swim away! Probably not perfect but as good as I can do! Tight lines, keep on tying! Best Regards!

Awesome comment my brother. We need to respect the fish, enjoy the battle, but get them back to their habitat as soon as we have met them. If I get them on and the release themselves, that is a win.

@@ShortyOnTheFly absolutely agree…..if you were curious where I am, it’s Newfoundland and Labrador! Small population, and vast numbers of rivers and lakes, way too many to count ?? Certainly more than any person could ever fish!! Keep on trucking!!

Caribou hair floats better than Deer, Elk or Moose(not good)! It is quite hollow! The only disadvantage is Caribou is more brittle so will not hold up as well as the others! However, for a spun deer hair trimmed body such as a bomber, it floats much better than the rest. I hunt and have taken Caribou, so it is readily available to me, as is SnowShoe hare! Thanks for your video and the info!

I remember when i started fly tying money was a real problem so i choose a fly i use a lot of (my go to fly) and bought those materials and every payday or anytime i had some money, i would go buy one or two pieces of fly tying material. This was a great way to stock up on materials without ever feeling like i was breaking the bank!! Now 48 years of fly tying later, i can fill a simi-trailer with my fly tying stuff!! Oh ya, i still need more materials! We will have enough, or ever be satisfied with the materials we have. Because someone somewhere created a fly pattern with materials we do not have!!😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

I haven’t tried a fly in over 30 years. But I’m getting back into that pleasure again! Your video was a great reminder that being creative is far more fun, then sticking to the book. Bugs took out a good portion of my feather stock. So I almost have start over building my supplies up. There’s a lot of new stuff going now. Let the fun begin!

I have a standing lamp with 5 adjustable lights illuminating from behind me and a strong lamp right over my vise on my desk. When tying at shows I have a Peak light that attaches to the stem of my vise. It is expensive but worth it. Do not underestimate the importance of good lighting.

Great little breakdown. One thing that always bugged me no pun intended is in which direction to put the flies into the little slots. Occassionally i find out that i put them in upside down. Also with a bit larger flies especially egg patterns i tend to skip a slot in order to make room for the next egg fly. I have tried putting them in free roaming boxes but egg flies with a veil tend to get stuck together in the hooks. So you go to pull one out and 5 come out and you drop a few on the ground lol. I havent tried magnetic boxes yet?.. plano makes a new one i might try. Lastly i put all my streamers in bugger barns but they take up alot of space. I kinda wish the slots in those were a bit closer together. Gain one thing and lose another. Too flat of a box and it crushes certain flies... Any good box recommendations for holding a large amount of egg paterns and nymphs?... Thanks! Fish on!🐟🎣

Would love to have a beginners guide to buying hackle😂. I’m overwhelmed by the options and want to know what the best bang for the buck is. “If someone has nothing… what should they buy first?” I have been tying flies when I go to my dad’s house😅… now I am building out my own kit but haven’t spent 30 years collecting things on sale like my dad has. Where should someone start with hackle?
@ShortyOnTheFly
@ShortyOnTheFly 8 месяцев назад
Hackle is tough. You should really find someone with experience and walk you through it. There are so many variables they are difficult to cover in a 10 minute video. I might give it a try but in the meantime find an experienced tier to help you out.

I have been wrapping the pheasant fiber wrapped around the wire and then wrap and rib with mono or tinsel. I never have a PT fall apart anymore. I then make a dubbing loop and twist the peacock hurl and wrap that and never have an issue with the hurl breaking off. I know the dubbing is easier but peacock hurl is fish magic. It is adding maybe 60 seconds ot the fly but it is nearly indestructible.
