I love the stranglers, but JJ is now the only original member still performing, which does have a great impact on their appeal to old fans like me. Without the soul of the stranglers, Dave Greenfield (R.I.P.) 😢😭I think they should retire and leave us with our golden memories of them in their heyday.
What I love about the stranglers live is that they play the music exactly as it's on the records. It's one of the reasons why they kept playing to full houses till the very end.
RIP Dave.I have seen you play live so many times I have lost count.a true gentleman and a very humble man.my thoughts and prayers are with Pam.you will be sadly missed by all strangler's fans.goodbye GENIUS DAVE.LEGEND!!! 😢💕
When people talk about the punk era they often bang on about the talentless Sex Pistols. Why? All gob metaphorically and physically and no real talent. By contrast the Stranglers could write great songs and that bass growl and rippling keyboards is a combination to die for. And the irony is that aside from that proper talent they did have all the anger and rebelliousness that punk was meant to stand for. Yes they are now a touring greatest hits band but what memories and still a joy to watch.
I will be extremely surprised if it's any good. I'm willing to bet it will be shit. They haven't written anything good since Hugh left. Maybe one track (Time to die), that's about it really.
I was there and on the guest list so got in for free. I was talked into going but refused at first because I'd seen the original Stranglers many times through the years. They were amazing in their day and I mean amazing. Without Hugh, I knew they wouldn't be the same. It was like watching a tribute band and to be honest ... boring. I went, I wish I hadn't. Left half way through. They really are a tribute band now. Just stick to listening to the albums (Pre 10) and watching old videos here. The Alarm (the support group) were much better. Lots more energy, lots more enthusiasm. Believe me, I never thought I'd say those words!
I love The Stranglers, how many bands today of the punk years, have the original line up .....my local lad singer ....keep up with the times........Walk on by.....
No doubt about it, he is extremely talented but this isn't really the Stranglers. They are a bacon butty without the sauce (Red or Brown), OK, but something is missing.
A fine guitar player too. Not many bands can afford to lose a musician the caliber of Hugh Cornwall. But Baz Warne makes a decent replacement frontman. I still prefer the old classics on albums like No More Heroes, Feline and Aural Sculpture. Even if the last ones were good.
It is true, for all those who lament the lack of Hugh, the later tours of the 80's displayed a not very together band. They were going through the motions. They are reinvigorated now and it shows massively. This years Manchester finale was as good as l've seen them.
I only noticed 2 members of The Stranglers here. Is this a tribute band? I've seen the Stranglers many, many times touring when Hugh was with them ...No more Heroes, La Folie, Raven, B/W etc. I saw them on the most recent B/W tour too. It wasn't the Stranglers, It didn't seem right, I left half way through. I had to, it was destroying the memory I had of them. They were absolutely amazing in their day! If you are impressed by this then you would have had a heart attack when they were at their peak!
I agree you are true fan. You've got to admit though, they are not half as good as they used to be? The No More Heroes tour ... I remember it as if it was yesterday ... absolutely amazing! I find most videos after Hugh left depressing.
Saw The Stranglers 25 times, 22 with Hugh, 1 with Paul and 2 with Baz, the last 5 or 6 years Hugh was bored and going through the motions, this is a lot more exciting than any live performance with Hugh after 1982.... in my opinion. Still love 'em! 😀
Hey, please, don't get me wrong, Baz is EXTREMELY talented and he puts everything into his performances. It isn't the real Stranglers though, is it? The words to the songs aren't his and neither are the emotions that were felt when the words were written. Hugh left because he wanted to move on and not be a group touring and performing 'greatest hits' all the time. Let's face it, the Stranglers have not produced a good album after Aural Sculpture (Even that is criticized). They've never had a hit after Hugh left either. He left because they had run their course. He did the right thing. One thing though, when you watch them, surely you must think back and remember the way they were?
What a wonderful way you have with words! You tried ever so hard to form a coherent sentence, you even managed to include two words with more than one syllable! You rebellious little critter!
