How fast does beneficial bacteria sets ? Does seachem matrix come already seating with any bacteria? What to do if we are in a rush for an ich outbreak? Won’t have time to dose turbo start ?
@HumblefishReef
@HumblefishReef 13 дней назад
@@MergulhoDoJoey Seachem Matrix does not come with bacteria. You have to “seed” it with live nitrifying bacteria. Unfortunately, this is not an instantaneous thing so I recommend keeping up with water changes until your biofilter kicks in. I will be utilizing one tank as I don’t have space so I’m going through quarantine as we speak with copper for 30 days then I would like to do almost 100% water change and observe for the next two weeks. My question is there is a slight bit of copper present shouldn’t be a big deal? Also, do I have to replace matrix to control ammonia every time I do a water change also, can I get away without doing a water change for the whole 30 days using prime from seachem?
@HumblefishReef
@HumblefishReef Месяц назад
A little bit of copper leftover is no big deal. Once your bio media (Matrix) is seeded with live nitrifying bacteria, it should be good to go until you break down the QT & clean everything. Whether or not you have enough nitrifying bacteria in the QT for continuous ammonia control (for your specific bio load) is an open-ended question. So, I highly recommend monitoring ammonia with a Seachem ammonia alert badge and do a water change anytime the color shows something other than yellow.

? for you. I lost all but one fish (bar goby) to velvet. I did 40 days QT like you mentioned before adding fish to my DT. The fish were great for 3 months and I broke down my QT tank. Days later, I added corals and snails. Within days, my fish started dropping and within a week, only the goby was left. My reef is fully loaded and there is no way to break it down to get that goby, who never got velvet. What am I to do? Some of what he's saying is just not true - pharma grade absolutely IS different it is NOT just a "marketing ploy." It meets higher chemical purity standards and has a certificate of analysis from the FDA. Food grade does not meet nearly as stringent purity requirements and the FDA classifies it as "generally safe." Whether it's good enough is a separate question, but to say that pharmaceutical grade ingredients is nothing more than some sort of ploy or marketing trick is absolutely incorrect.

I get what you're saying, I will agree it does tend to hold to a higher standard, however we will agree to disagree on how much the use of Pharma by reefing companies is used to communicate quality vs marketing hype. My opinion is it's far more marketing to raise prices. If you review the msds sheets on VitaCal (Mississippi lime or their 'pharma') you'll see that the things that matter are effectively just as good. but i appreciate your view.

I got brave enough to get a Scopas Tang (I’m scared of tangs, because they’re parasite magnets) from my LFS, which said it had been there 3 months! I didn’t quarantine (lesson learned), and all was going well for a couple weeks. Maria De Scopas (I named her a mix of Spanish and the Latin to say “broom of the sea” 😊) was eating very well. I had just gotten her to start eating sheet nori. Skittish, but doing well. Then boom… my world was rocked. I saw spots. I was hoping sand. Next day, more spots, but no one else was affected. The next day, she’s worse and Emo Nemo, my Darwin Clown, is in really bad shape! So fast… from nothing to covered in a day. Yeah, a grown 45 year old man ugly cried! Google brought me to your site, and I read and read. I did the H2O2 dip for 30 min, as per instructions. I’m starting dosing on the tank immediately! I don’t know what the outcome will be, as Emo is struggling. But if I save just one fish… I owe you big time! Thank you so much for all the research and time you put into this. I really thought I was going to lose everything, as soon as I realized it was velvet. I haven’t read much that was inspiring about copper and QT with velvet. You gave me, Maria de Scopas (Scopas Tang), Princess Picasso (Picasso Clown), Emo Nemo (Darwin Clown), and Pixie Rasmussen (Fairy Wrasse) hope! Thank you again for that. Corals don’t seem to be ill affected, according to everything I’ve read… especially since they’ve all received H2O2 dips in the beginning… but I’d gladly trade one or two for my fish family.
