If you watch Space Raiders från 1984 (produced by Roger Corman), you can hear many of James Horner's offcut pieces from his composing work for Wrath of Khan.
The script had to be written quickly because otherwise ILM would not have time to create the visual effects. There was a scheduled release date but Paramount had not sold tickets in theaters (which isn’t how these things work).
Miami Vice came out about the same time as TSFS in 1984. Edward James Olmos wouldn’t have been famous as Castillo during casting/filming of TSFS in 1983.
One thing. Shatners career was in the toilet and he didnt have a TV Career of any note at that time. TJ Hooker was well after TMP. TMP is the best Trek pic in my opinion, especially the directors cut. The Shat was typecast as Kirk and living in a trailer with his dogs with no money before TMP Nimoy had the best TV Career at that time with Impossible Mission
I definitely agree with that, being Tombstone as one of the greatest westerns along with the other two mentioned. Silverado should also get a honorable mention.
I was sorely disappointed in this movie. It was a little fun but too many problems to call it good. The biggest one was Beetlejuice himself. Keaton played him well but he wasn't scary in the story. In the first movie you dont say his name 3 rimes or terrible things happen. In this movie he was just helpful, did nothing wrong. He was more like the Beetlejuice from the cartoon. Then theres his wife. What was the point, she added nothing and changed nothing. They could have removed her from the story and it wouldnt have changed a thing. They just kept showing clips of her getting closer to Beetlejuice like there was going to be some climax, but she finds him and immediately gets eaten by a sandworm. Why was she part of the story? It was pointless. Then that song at the wedding, it started fun but went on waaaay too long. It was just trying to remake the day o song but didnt quite hit the mark, should uave been a minute or two but it went on far too long. And then that cop. Was funny and i liked him but he said the name Beetlejuice so many times. I thought you dont say his name 3 times, but its like they forgot that was a thing with him. The movie was still a little fun, but i was so disappointed. The acting was excellent, but the story was bad. I like the evil Beetlejuice who you dont say his name. He was just a helpful nice guy in this movie. He didn't trick anyone but was tricked himself by lydia. The best part of the movie was far and away lydias mom. She was funny as hell. And Keaton was good as beetljuice, he was funny. Just not the trickster from the first movie. And the way he lost on a technicality was a dumb copout. Why would sneaking her in null the contract? And how would ortega get that from quick glances at the book for the recently diseased (which is supposed ro be hard ro understand according to the first movie) and she could spawn a sandworm from those quick glances. She learnwd an awful lot without actually reading the book. The acting was good and that made the movie fun but the story was horrible and made no sense at times and just didnt do Beetlejuice justice.
@@TotallyAwesomeFilmsPodcast you are welcome. And don't get me wrong, if you liked the movie then enjoy it. I just find that for a movie as iconic as Beetlejuice, the sequel had big shoes to fill and didn't hit the mark for me. I was hoping for a terminator 2 or mad Max fury road or top gun maverick. Instead we got ninja turtles 2 (original) where it was fun to watch but couldn't hold a candle to the first one.
It was nice to revisit beetlejuice, however this movie was a poor sequel. Tim Burton was a phenominal director for a time. He hasn't done anything noteworthy since Big Fish. The man is spent.
Almost everyone in the theater WEPT when Spock died saving the ship... Almost everyone in the theater WEPT when SPOCK'S "KOTRAH" was returned to his regenerated body....! James Horner met a tragic end piloting his own aircraft. A terrible loss....
The Romulans seemed to be forgotten. Even in ST6, when there was talk about the bases along the neutral zone, they were designated Klingon rather than Romulan, which went against the OS. Well, who cares.
It's weird to think that the Romulans were not really used until Star Trek: Nemesis. I thought Star Trek 2009 proved they could work as villains. Thank you for the comment!
Nice job condensing it into 16 min. No mention of the death of David scene or stealing the Enterprise sequence is a crime though. All in all very entertaining.
So Harve Bennett did more research than the entirety of anyone who’s directed a modern Disney Star Wars show (Tony Gilroy excepted) or anyone directing a marvel show.
You are so right. Can you imagine how good Dosney Star Wars could be if they put in the same effort and research as Harve Bennett? And you're ight, Tony Gilroy is awesome!
Kevin Costner sucks. He is a bad actor and has an holier-than-thou, uppity attitude. How he keeps getting work is a genuine mystery. Tombstone was infinitely better than Costner's version.
Where was Carol Marcus in star trek III? Did the film's novelization provide an explanation? Was she on board the Enterprise when they returned to Earth and we simply didn't see her on screen?
In the novelization, she is transferred to the USS Grissom but refuses to go, saying that she is not a Starfleet Officer. David volunteers to go in her place. In Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, in the original Nick Meyer script, Kirk is retired and living with Carol Marcus. I go into more detail in my Star Trek 6 video which should be coming out in the future!
Also, Star Trek the Motion Picture was not the most expensive movie made up to that date. Superman: The Movie was. The Salkinds often divulged that 'Superman's' had cost $50M. But more recently Ilya Salkind has admitted that between the footage Donner shot for the 1st and 2nd pictures, the actual tally was $100M. At the time, this massive budget (the largest in history) was reported by a gossip columnist named Rona Barrett, but the Salkinds had denied it.
Dykstra didn't actually work on the actual effects for Star Wars, he developed the camera equipment. When Lucas returned from location, he found Dykstra and his team sitting around in the middle of the afternoon smoking weed. They had not captured a single, usable shot, and argued that they needed George to guide them. George fired the lot of them and hired people like Dennis Murren to complete the actual effects. Dykstra has since publicly apologized and distinguished himself as one of the best in the business.
That is very interesting. Thank you for the comment.😀 I also heard that they installed a small portable swimming pool in the front parking lot of ILM and the team was just goofing off all day. 🤣
Wrath of Khan, and Nick Meyers other contribution The Undiscovered Country are by far my faves, with the Shatner directed Final Frontier not even in my collection. I’d rather forget about it!
I agree! I love Wrath of Khan, Undiscovered Country, and Voyage Home. I also love Search for Spock. Final Frontier is such a train wreck but there is something very watchable about it. I'll post a video on Final Frontier soon. Thay production was an epic train wreck!
@@TotallyAwesomeFilmsPodcast Thanks. I just came off the new Beetlejuice video after binging the other ST ones. I saw the film last night. While bloated with characters. Your take helped me appreciate it a bit more. Proud to subscribe!
Why do you content creators ruin your videos with crappy stock footage that has no connection to the video? It shows a tremendous lack of creativity. We do not have to see an old fashioned telephone when you talk about a call. For this reason I will not be liking, or following or watching any more of your videos
TMP is one of those movies, just like 2001, that I didn't learn to fully appreciate until I was older, into my 30s. In my final analysis, I feel TMP is a brilliant film. The aging concept was center to the TWOK story, and in canon, a decade had gone by since the events of TMP, hence the Enterprise being relegated to a training vessel. Certain aspects of that first Trek 2 treatment seemed to have been used for the TOS novel, "First Frontier" (such as the Federation never existing and the Guardian being used again).
I agree! I always loved Wrath of Khan and Voyage Home but I didn't truly appreciate TMP until I saw it in 1997 in thr late 20's. I appreciate it more and more and I love the Director's Cut.
It's crazy to think they made a movie for $13 million. Look at what movies cost now and what actors get paid. It's gone completely nuts. And with all that money, I don't see movies coming out even close to the quality of Star Trek 2. Sure, they have amazing special effects and all that, but the stories and acting are crap. They're also ridiculously long!
@@inhometraineroakville1174 Ha, ha, I remember waaaay back in the day, some magazine article was complaining about the same thing, that things like Star Wars and Jaws had distorted film making by setting such a high cash bar...they also specifically cited Terminator 2 for 80 MILLION dollar price-tag! Ha-ha! I don't mind expensive movies. I just wish Hollywood would go back to making movies I'd like, with less obvious woke/DEI messaging.
That is an amazing story. The precedent-setting CGI and direct video marketing surprised me, not to mention the true believers who charged low wages to no wages. I was a kid in high school who had grown up on the TOS. The movie was so, so awesome, and it still is.
