Aesop being raised catholic, and seemingly working through religious trauma (like a lot of us who grew up in the church), he points out the hypocrisy of the church. This track is the most damning, but is a consistent theme in his music.
I don;'t think they even knew what this song was about. I think Robbie Robertson said it wasn't intended to have any biblical sense but could see why people felt that way. Nazareth? Well, it was probably Nazareth, PA where the Martin Guitar factory is, which is where Robbie probably got the lyric. But he wrote the characters based on real people they knew when they were living in Woodstock, NY.

I find most reactions of Aussie hip hop and definitely for Hilltop Hoods has been there more commercial songs. Go check out “Laying Blame” from The Calling LP back in ‘03.
