It's funny. I was living in Honolulu when this commercial came out. I can tell by the music that's on the commercial. I've lived in Hawai 3 separate times and I'm moving back in 2024 for a forth as a sixty-year-old man and that's where I'm going to die, even though I'm a white boy from New York, I always have had Hawai in my blood from January of 1984 when i arrived as a 19-year-old in the Army.
my husband lived on Hickam AFB from 1988-1992 and several of my husband father’s tv video recordings have this commercial on it. I can see why my husband loves the group Hiroshima and i played the Koto at our wedding to this song to show my husband one of my favorite hobbies
I worked for KHON from 1979-80 and then later at KGMB while at KGMB I worked part-time at Olelo back then Olelo paid people to work for them , now it is all volunteer. so this one assignment at Olelo I was covering the Fasi campagn, I was told by Jeremy Harris to put down the camera and hold signs for Fasi, well I did what I was told, later I was told by my family that Fasi lost the election and beat his wife Joyce, don't know about this couldn't verify if this was true but that's my experience with Fasi and Harris.
"Hi I'm Didi Ah-Yo and away we go!" wow, I remember those commercials, that surreal sensation when you haven't seen a commercial in over 30 years but remember it...
I remember that Hawaiian Electric campaign to improve their image after Wattless Wednesday. Loved the music - bought that album and a couple others by Hiroshima.
@@kshinokevin Wili had a particularly sad ending, due to him intentionally ignoring his diabetes by excessive eating and drinking and eventually dying from it, after getting increasingly sick and having one or both legs amputated.
The transit system proposed at that time was never started; the system currently under construction didn't start till decades later. Red carnation lei went out of fashion partly because people came to associate them with politicians, particularly Frank Fasi and George Ariyoshi. It's interesting that these commercials are from at least two different TV stations: channel 4 and channel 9.
I'm surprised to see this on RU-vid.. Nohelani Cypriano shared this link. In 2003 Danny Couch sent me this video on VHS to feature on his website.. Danny Couch Fanaddicts. Such an honor... and you know Nohelani, I have your Way of Love 45rpm that you had duet with him and signed for me.. Your voices are incredible! I remember the song and commercial living on Oahu. ('87-'91) Alvah Scott elementary, Makalapa elementary, and Aliamanu intermediate school. I always associate the song with my time living there. Great memories. Thank you. 🤙🏽
my husband attended Hickam Elementary (88-92) i was looking at his year book! Hawaiian Electric and the group Hiroshima is burning into my husband’s memory and i love seeing this commercial too!
sister & i were bored kids in 1987, parents were workin so we called creative holidays after seeing the commercial. I asked for didi ah yo, the receptionist gave the phone to her. She sounded the same on the phone with that high pitch voice, then when she asked who's calling i quoted her with the exact same voice & tone 0:24 then hung up. Till this day almost 3 decades later, family would laugh when the topic is mentioned.
