I was there! it was truly a joy to attend this year’s Long Play, and what better way to end it than with this wonderful piece! I sincerely hope I get the chance to go to another Long Play at some point in the future! and by the way, to David, Julia, and Michael, I hope y’all enjoyed the salsa my dad and I brought! :D
Wow, that was a surprisingly above-par ending (I mean in terms of what you usually hear in new music, not the excellent musician's performances). Really cool piece.
Pranams( Greetings and Thank you) to Steve Reich from Chennai,South India. The word ` minimalism' was SUCH a mental block for me till i heard this work. I really like and admire this piece of music and it was great to see the composer take a bow at the end. Thanks again, Mr. Reich.
This week i've been listening to Bang on Can's version of In C (Terry Riley) and the first release of Music for 18 Musicians a lot, this was uploaded in the perfect time
Really fascinating music. I have heard it a couple of times before, but I believe I never heard it as intriguing as this. The human voices puts an extra dimension to this. It swings!
I love the fact that there's some vibrato on the (left hand side?) voices and possibly violin! Refreshing to hear something different in a Mf18M rendition!
Have loved his work for about 45 years. When I was 17 or so, I saw the ensemble perform at North Western and University of Chicago. Glass was actually loading all his own gear. I went back in the theater - saw him messing with equipment and said, "I don't want to bother you, but I want to tell you that was the most beautiful music I've ever heard." He stopped, thanked me, and said to wait in the lobby and he'll say hi to me and my friends. He kept his promise and loaded me up with goodies as I was on my university's "radio station". He was kind, lovely, and interested in what a bunch of teenagers had to say. Even gave us his address to send a tape. (My friend had his own 'ensemble'.) I'll never forget. Was fortunate to meet him at a handful of events after that - one being opening night of Satyagraha in Chicago; we had the box next to his.
