Admittedly VIKI's take on the three laws reminds me of R. Daneel Olivaw's Zeroth Law which dictates that robots must protect all of humanity, but he had a far more subtle and less violent way of applying the Zeroth law.
Unpopular opinion but I love every single Pirates film. Dead Man Tell No Tales is my favorite because fuck it I’m just here for fun pirate fuckery going on.
I finished a binge of all 4 seasons a few weeks ago and it's one of those things that I wish I could forget so I could experience them again. I am also hooked on SKorean TV in general now.
Foundation is a show that provides abundance of evidence that studying the past cannot predict the future, nor can the future be predicted by man. What it does show, is that studying the past helps us learn what the fuck not to do, for example conquer lands that aren’t ours, be racist, or annihilate an entire population. The show would’ve been fantastic if it at least focused on one thing at a time, and the Genetic Dynasty was a phenomenal concept, but so poorly executed it fucked the show. The amount of times Dawn/Day/Dusk were replaced without enough being given to the viewer to recognize that detracts from the engagement the show has with the viewer.
I know the whole idea of the word "robot" can be delved in many interesting ways, but considering the word was made before the modern idea of a robot, i don't think its a good idea to claim a story about humans who are treated like robots by an opressive upper class is more interesting than delving into robot vs human supremacy in the near future. Neither is assuredly better than the other, so while Asimov only really cares about the first type of story, it makes sense that most people dont care about seeing or adapting it properly when the alternative is more complex and uncertain. I have a feeling most of Asimov's stories would collapse if capitalism and working rights were properly addressed, however even if such a utopia was formed, robot "rights" as we know them will still be far from ever considered.
Mad Max Fury Road might be the most overrated movie I've ever seen. It's an entire movie about driving in a line that's so boring even the characters decide to turn around and go home.
Wasn't Peter Jackson a producer on The Hobbit when Del Toro was set direct? During the extended period that the project was on hold/pre-production, wasn't Jackson involved with writing or at the very least, story beats or AT LEAST following the progress of the project? I'm not sure cutting Jackson so much slack is warranted. Or do producers just get their credit and then just bugger off and collect their royalties when/if the project is completed?
15:40 "get'em, Will!" This video so good. I'm halfway through and you made me laugh twice. Sure, insightful takes and well written content are great, but making me laugh is hard. That's not a boast, obviously. I love laughing.
We really didn't know how GOOD we really had it back then! I saw the first film in theaters just as I turned 18 (just before seeing the last LOTR film, the first while I was still a minor) and saw the first two sequels while midway through college.
I loved Nemik's Manifesto in Episode 12: "Freedom is a pure idea... The Imperial need for control is so desperate because it's so unnatural. Tyranny requires constant effort. It breaks. It leaks. Authority is brittle. Oppression is the mask of fear." His message of struggle against certain defeat resonated with me, and is what I interpreted as the primary point of the show, given that we know Andor won't live to see the empire overthrown. To struggle against oppression is enough.
These films really had the “movie magic” that just transported you into a believable fantasy world. they weren’t Oscar worthy films, but they were really fun
if only it were an inflection point...now we have The Acolyte, showing they didnt learn anything and we are back in the exhaustive dribble content era. The best star wars media in the last 3 years: Andor Jedi video games Bad Batch
It's not just about making the news entertaining, but also literally telling narratives that they know certain viewers want to hear regardless of how much of a lie it may be.
the "shithead anti-woke brigade" didn't fail to notice what Elizabeth was up to, they appreciated the fact that it was a natural facet of her well-developed and well-written character and therefore didn't seem awkward in the way that a character who exists primarily to promote agenda does.
It slipped under the nose of the "rabid anti-woke crowd" cause most people that are labeled as that don't care about different messaging, but when you priority is activism first, money second, and quality third and you make a bad product people get frustrated with your messaging
One of the points that I hated that were not covered in the cideo, while smaller in scope in regards to the storyline, was still extremely irritating was how the Anacreons and the Thespins with their entire planets to draw forces from, seemed to posses like 80 troops between them and the Foundation had like 3 guns 😂
Interesting take. I loved that movie. Tried to listen to the book but never managed to stay focused. For me the biggest problem with the movie is that when he takes the pill and starts working out, he's doing floor crunches. It was a strange thing to see the smartest person in the world select an ab exercise that even at that time was known not to be a great addition to any workout. And then there's the borrowing from a dangerous man and forgetting about it. But that's not as bad as the crunches.
Thanks for this amazing analysis. Is one of my favourite show of all times and the peak Star Wars without doubt. Every minute you dedicate to the program is a minute that the program will reward you with a story in constant development, well written and made with a lot of love and respect for the franchise. It just doesn't make sense that we were so lucky that someone wrote this treasure. Long live Tony Gilroy!
I'm so glad I came across this video. Bc after Wakanda Forever came out (and became one of my all time favorite Marvel movies) I began to just write this movie off as "the lesser Black Panther movie" but you explained every reason I fell in love with this world in the first place. This movie ran so that Wakanda Forever could soar.
Obviously there are people who don't play games and i'll say this is a good way to experience the game's story without playing it. But as someone who has played the game a shit ton, i'm still not the biggest fan of the tv show, i hate how they removed all the little details from the game that expaned Ellie's and Joel's relationship, i hate the casting in the show cause Ellie and Joel look nothing like the original characters, i hate pacing of the show, lot of the scenes just felt rushed. One thing i did like though was the backstory of some events and characters that wasn't really told in the game.
Lee Pace to Foundation is what Antony Starr is to Amazon's The Boys, both just carry the shows on their back, while all the other characters are like small insects
I really prefer I, Robot (which by the way in my knowledge is not a novel by Asimov, but a new release of a short novels collection, so not a "real book") than what became the Foundation "adaptation" by Apple. This is a true failure. To me, the best adaptation is Bicentennial Man.
Imagine watching the show and not seeing that Dani has been psyco from the start. She only wants to end slavery because she thinks that will win her hearts to rule. Not because she wants it to end because it's morally wrong. She's fine with the people not getting a say in how they are ruled because she's the ruler. Anytime anyone goes against her, she has the murdered. Every seen where an advisor tells her to do something she doesn't want to do because it's the right thing to do she grimaces and throws herself. Though she ends up doing it because she wants to be queen so badly and the advisors convince her it's the right thing to achieve that goal. She's constantly talk about how it would be easier to just go burn down the cities and armies but is reigned in by cooler heads. She legit burns the witch alive for killing Khal Drogo, a man that kid napped rated and tortures the witches people.. Dani is a mad queen from the start
I agree with much of what you had to say... but I think you overlook why people love TV shows. People love the characters.. If the writers set the show up as 1:1 adaptation to the books... it would only satisfy a very small fan base. People don't watch to see how a civilization finds resiliency. Although Foundation has some problems, it is quite an amazing tv show. That does a pretty good job given the medium that it is using. Great Vid though
