it is funny how very few going for international level, even top domestic level competition, where a few feet make the difference between joy and sorrow, do not seem to master any of these technical points in this video. I am thinking the hands / scull clearance / entry & exit. A bit like a darts player just being happy to hit the board and have the point stick in. This is such a good video to ponder.
What a great video, what a good comment. Main principles still there after so many years. Long live Thomas Lange: last Olympic champion with Macon blades and first one with the Big Blades. I remember Gianni Postiglione -- then of the Italian Team -- showing us footage of his perfect finish back in the Eighties.
@@ferdinand1x I think thats a rule the Swiss Federation uses - they make the juniors row with macons to develop technique. Big Blades are a lot more forgiving of technique flaws, apparently. Not a bad rule, to be honest.
Did you know that there is a rowing shoe named “Thomas Lange”? JLSPORT.DE created it together with Thomas Lange. Look here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-95dnsb_4EIY.html and have a close look here: rudershop.de/ruder-schuhe/880-16514--ruder-schuhe-thomas-lange-4260415260352.html#/186-schuhgrosse-45
Thomas Lange employs a style of sculling that emphasizes a lot of body swing, and while this is a style that works for Lange, it is not style that should be imitated unthinkingly. It is not the style that makes the man, but rather the man that makes the style.
This is how I like to scull! I sculled R over L for 30 yrs but changed so I could scull in crews. The E Germans all sculled R over L. We joked at the time that it was to prevent defection :-D But I sculled against a Berlin 4x in the final at Henley Veterans regatta and they had 2 from E sculling R over L and 2 from W sculling L over R. It only worked of there were equal numbers! Nobody else used their boat!
great video, great rowing! What a very good style in compare with this year olympic champion. But i dont think that this is from 1986. In 1986 Thomas rowed for East-Germany (GDR) and used eastgerman boats (now BBG), not empacher.
The original vhs video was obtained by myself from the German Federation in 1986, whilst I was working with BIRO. Ron Needs then put an english commentary in place of the german commentary.
@bcdrachman I think it's Ron Needs. Well anyway, some of the credits (that got cut off because of a "bad spot" in the tape) said the tape was Produced by Ron Needs. I think that means it's his voice :)
the first piece was much better @2:40 If you notice the 2nd piece, you start floundering, and you are totally HACKING the catches in. The finishes look a little lethargic, so the set is off and the boat speed suffers. Petar seems to be suffering here, and you guys can't seem to "get away" from him. The heavy catches are stopping the boat, and you look like you're weigh lifting more than moving the boat. It clears back up again at 4:20-ish and you start moving away again.
washing out a little. also-- at about 35 second in, you hit a wall. When this happens, you need to need to need to keep your head up. If I were in a dual race with you and we were tied--- and I saw you drop your head like that--- it's GAMEOVER for you. always stay confident, chest up, head up.
Sometimes--- a little "hang" at the catch. Remember that "urgency". The second clip--- which starts about 57 secs in is much better. Both of you, however.... make sure you are squeezing in a little higher. It almost looks as if we are "washing out"
Guys: sometimes you're washing out. Keep the hands high into the body. and tense your butt cheeks up a little--- that'll allow you to sit higher into the boat. trey- u especially, squeeze the blade higher into the body, as you approach the body, the handle heads straight for your lap. DON'T do that.
Klein: -gettin better with the body over-- although look how U R resetting/straightening your arms right @ the catch again. - kinda looks like a "wind up" to the catch, and the blade gets high off the water Boehm: - U R kinda winding up to the catch like Alex is. Some of this will come with better balance. Better clearance off of the water will allow you to prep the catch a little better. Both of you: - this is looking like a different boat compared to a week ago!!!! Good work (so far)
Also: Boehm- you need to start the rollup 1/10 sec sooner. Klein- start yours 1/10 later. BOTH of you: Also notice your hand levels at the finish. Both of you finishing into your lap a little, and washing out. Klein more noticeable, but both are doing it. This has to be solved starting with PICK and Swing PICK at the begin of practice. We can work on your heights if the problem persists.
Klein: -see you are rolling up a little sooner than John. -@20 seconds-- see the late body prep. Look at your hands almost running into your knees, AND THEN a late straightening of the arms. +Good Catch, GOOD length. BONUS Boehm: -Same "late reach" as Klein, However you are doing it different. You body angle is there, but you are rolling the shoulders into the catch with your arms straight. Taht is forcing your bodyweight into the bottom of the boat. -late rollup, late catch. +GOOD POWER
Hands are not "slow", but there is a slight hesitation before the hands away. As a result, it looks like you are trying to "catch up" in the last 4 inches of the recovery--- you seem to _accelerate_ into the catch position. :( bad! You can especially set it in the last 25 seconds. Remember: Set the body angle early, and draw the feet to you. ALSO--- you look as if you are washing out slightly. Keep the hands high, and extract clean. Work on the 1/4 feather rowing.
Mike, you dump your chin at the finish. Also you are kinda flapping your elbows at the feather. just try and poke the elbows OUT a little more and snap the wrist only.
