Hey everyone! I buy Laserdisc players that have problems and fix them up....90% of the time. Laserdiscs are a hobby and passion of mine. I want to share with everyone what I have learned over the years to keep them spinning and working just right. Sometimes we will explore other home AV technologies as well.

So far this worked for my Sony MDP-333. I pretty much was dead in the water for CAV discs and CLV discs had a hard time starting up. But this resolved all of it. Only other issue is scanning on a CAV disc causes it to trip out and stop playing. I may have to adjust more than the focus at that point, the tilt perhaps? I have not tried.

Great to see another player being modded for more functionality. This board has got the footprint for the SPDIF Jack next to the CD syncro socket at the back. There is a surface mounted resistor missing just near the chip that you soldered the wire to that stops the signal being router any further through the board. You can then cut the panel and it looks pretty much factory fitment. No extra wires etc. couple of components to fill the OEM spots but aren’t strictly required and the mod looks factory. Obviously yours works which is great but maybe the next one you need to mod you could check the back edge of the board for the empty footprint. There is a thread on LDDB by much smarter people than me about the exact components to fit which I have used as a guide in the past to mod players like this.
@Laserdiscrepair
@Laserdiscrepair Месяц назад
You are absolutely correct. I put that in a CLD-V2800 and it looked factory. The hard part for me was getting the square hole just right, no negotiating on that one. Maybe I'll make another video showing that install. Thanks for watching!

I wonder if you have an in circuit ESR tester if that would've shown them up as bad (as i know its hard to test uf in circuit). Also was the Supercap bad too or just replaced as a precaution ?
@Laserdiscrepair

Thanks for watching! Yeah, I need to get an ESR tester. This one is pretty basic. I was not able to verify if the Super Cap was bad or good because my tester doesn’t go up that high. I’ll keep it around and test when I get a better tool.

This is one of the players I own but it's considered one of the weaker of the players I own. What I do like about this player is it's a lot lighter than other models. I believe this players only weighs around 16 or 17 pounds which is very light for a laserdisc player. 20-30 pounds might not sound like a lot more for the other players but it is because the weight isn't proportional and it's odd weight. Now since I've moved players often I'm a bit used to moving them but for people just getting into laserdisc and want a couple players to own. I can see that be annoying the heavier the weight is. I'm a fairly strong guy too since I've done Construction Work through out my life working for my Father. I did the grunt work so lifting heavy stuff or moving liquid cement in Wheel barrels. I wonder if the older I get if it's going become more of a pain moving laserdisc players from place to place. I don't think so because I believe the last thing to go is power. There' a lot of strong guys in their 60s and 70s.

How did it perform when hooked up with speakers? My old MDP-455 mod from years ago was a problem due to the lack of a “mute” connection on the AC3 board and I would occasionally get a loud bang of sound on my speakers prior to disc start up. After that, the disc would play fine until the next side break and I have the loud bang again depending on the disc played. I’m not sure if it’s just a Sony thing which is why I ask. I ask others who have modified Pioneer units without “mute” added and they seem fine. Nevertheless, all the mods I have done since incorporates the mute circuit and I have never had the “rude awakening” since then 🙂.

Why risk potentially damaging or breaking the laserdisc player connections? I wish I could see a benefit? This is an example of having far too much free time! Adapters are inexpensive and pose zero risk as they are to the laserdisc player. There are also plenty of upscaling options if you are looking to make the video quality more appealing on modern TVs. Such as the RetroTink4k. Regardless, If the time and effort was worth it to you, I guess that is the overall benefit! Thanks for sharing your mod!

I just had to this yesterday. Make sure all the back screws are out that secure it to the middle part of the frame. Video/Audio board screws count as well. Once these are out, tilt the rear panel forward about 15 degrees and pull up. This should release it.

Nice work ! Definitely sounds like that player needs some proper (‘by the book’) calibration on the tracking and focus. The other demodulator that wasn’t working, is it faulty or just didn’t work with the mod ? I’d be interested to know the voltage of the signal coming out of the mod board to the Coax.

Thanks for commenting. The Marantz was definitely bad. I’ll make a video on that as well, haha. I tested the Marantz on 3 separate players. Voltage coming out was 4.5Volts. I was surprised it wasn’t lower given Sony rep for AC3 voltage difficulties.

Nice fix! I look forwards to the AC3 Mod video as i've heard the Sonys can be picky with really low RF levels that make a lot of normal mod boards not work as they need an amplifier.

I Don’t have the equipment to drill a hole on the chassis, my unit has voltage regulator on the back, so I used that hole for the optical jack output and just put the voltage regulator inside the chassis. Also didn’t have any screw hole on the optical jack as I unsoldered it from broken DVD player. So I put some Epoxy around it from the inside and it looks great and very professional on the outside
@Laserdiscrepair

Is there any way to use the existing coax/optical plugs and solder the the 3 pins to the new wires. I guess it’s possible if we can shorten the onboard input connection and use the jack as output. Is it possible?
@Laserdiscrepair
@Laserdiscrepair 11 месяцев назад
If you're going coax, there are some considerations to be made. I think you may need a resistor and possibly a small capacitor before you connect to the RCA jack. Also, you don't need the +5V for RCA connection. The +5V here is to power the light.
@erdonniedarko
@erdonniedarko 11 месяцев назад
Thank you. Actually I meant using the existing optical input and “Convert” it to output as the 3 pins is is accessible on the board, and somehow cancel it’s input option
@johantorneheim1384
@johantorneheim1384 4 месяца назад
@@erdonniedarkoNot possible. A output has a laser diode integrated in the optical jack. For an input you need an optoisolator, or LDR/phototransistor, or some kind of detector, so it means swapping the opto jack component.

Is where the digital out is tapped will work with the optical and coaxial inputs so the mod makes the DDP-1 a digital switcher or does the mod only work with the AC-3RF input?
@Laserdiscrepair
@Laserdiscrepair Год назад
Mod only works on the AC-3RF input. I'm trying to chase down someone from LDDB who made a auto switching circuit. Essentially, they are watching to see if AC3 is active or not active. If not active, it sends the optical in through the optical out.

Bad Laser
@MovieGuy846
@MovieGuy846 2 года назад
Most likely not. Might be a CD centering issue but hard to say. It does come up with the error code of E5 which is a slider issue. Odd... but I noticed a hum when the CD was loaded and that sounds like motor trying to spin (maybe the spindle or maybe the pick-up motor). There could be an issue of dried grease on the laser pick-up track since it has to be come in closer to the spindle motor (e.g.: if the player was used mostly for LD, that would explain grease getting dried up on the inner most track preventing smooth movement for the pick-up).

@MovieGuy846
@MovieGuy846 2 года назад
@@SurgemanX The more I watch this video, the less likely I think it is a centering or bad laser issue. The fact that the CD never gets a spin up (which is needed for the player to identify the disc) tells me there is something jamming up possibly on the clamper side or the spindle motor platform. There is a spring loaded piece on the spindle platform called a PRC Hub that supposed to go down when a CD is loaded (it will stay up with an LD since the larger hole of an LD just passes around it). I would check this out by simply using your fingers to see if it goes down smoothly. If not, it may just need some oil to loosen it up (or need a cleaning).
@SurgemanX

@@MovieGuy846 it's a defective laser.Seen it a many of times when I was repairing them years back.RCA(Pioneer made) and the Pioneers were always the worst models for it.It's a pricey little pick up assembly that's for sure.The only one I found was Aliexpress for $128.00.I have 1 in storage same model,and the same issue.
@MovieGuy846
@MovieGuy846 2 года назад
@@SurgemanX That’s a lot of money to spend on essentially a guess that you are making. A good repair technician knows that giving that kind of advice without actually seeing the device in person is bad troubleshooting. Also, it doesn’t hurt to investigate all the potential avenues first that could cause this issue before spending a fortune on a part that may not be an issue. And honestly speaking, there is something obviously wrong if the spindle doesn’t turn the CD (you don’t hear that hum?). Lastly, I’ve owned players since 1988 and not one of my now 15 working players have ever had an issue playing a CD or LD (laser pick-ups on LD players don’t go bad that often). It’s actually more common to see a failed spindle motor before a laser pick-up. And today with people shipping players for purchase, now you can throw in mechanical alignment as one of the more common issues now for player issues.

If the cam hits the black rider as shown here, then there is an issue with the gear timing. Other symptoms may be that the carriage may drop and jam as the black rider falls over the end of the tilt cam.
