Fantastic observations! I must note that if your area hasn't transitioned to cashless tolls, it will eventually, so the toll paying inconvenience shouldn't be a long term issue, I would think. I'd only be irritated by larger vehicles trying to intimidate me...too much unnecessary road aggrssion these days against complete strangers. But if we were all logical, no one in the US would have imported any Cappuccino.
@deldodrives
@deldodrives 2 года назад
Thanks for the comment! Agree, most tolls are going the way of cashless so soon won’t be an issue/inconvenience. Driver’s have been more aggressive than usual over the past 2 years. I’ve been trying to do some videos with my AZ-1 but have been hesitant because of this. Be safe out there!
@marka.2484

I own a 1993 Cappuccino and live in the Netherlands. It is such a fun car! The only big disadvantage of the driver's position is at the right side, is that overtaking on a two-lane road is extremely dangerous. So I just don't. The trick I've learned to not go too much to the left side of my lane is to have a visual marker point. When the slot between the hood and the right side front panel is in line with the white marker lines of the road, you're good. Also, when driving on the highway, you have to think like a motorbike driver. Anticipate, being cautious, because you are extremely vurnable in such a small car. An accident will probably kill you. Other than that, I think it proves that drive a tiny sports car like this can give you more satisfaction than e.g. a Porsche 911.
@deldodrives
@deldodrives 2 года назад
Thanks for the comment! I completely agree with you. Being so small, it's easy to have much larger vehicles miss you just like they would a motorbike. It's key to be alert and anticipate other's moves. As for driving, I compared this to my Porsche Boxster from a handling perspective but the Cappuccino, and most other kei sports cars, are leagues ahead in the fun department. In fact, the Cappuccino has been, to date, my favorite car to drive!

I'm thinking about using this car as a daily driver but I find myself on the highway a lot. Is this car fine on the highway or will it have trouble keeping up?
@deldodrives
@deldodrives 3 года назад
It really depends on where you live. Here in the Southeastern United States, highways average 70+ MPH (112+ KM). Even though the Street/Acty vans top out around 71 mph, that’s really flooring it and you’d be in the high rpm range. I would recommend these for daily driving in a heartbeat if you mostly did city driving or had a highway system that was 55 mph or less but anything faster than that and it would definitely struggle to keep up. If you do a lot of highway driving, look into the Daihatsu Atrai vans. They’re turbo and can keep up with traffic well. I also have a friend who daily’s a Suzuki Wagon R and he tells me it keeps up with highway traffic really well. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions and thanks for watching!

I have the pick up truck version with a 5 speed and drove it for 108 miles at 65, I’ve gotten it to go up to 78mph before but it can’t do that easily. I averaged 35.1 mpg and handled the trip perfectly despite being at high RPM for so long, these little engines are fine tough and able to take the high rpm beating. If you want to go faster that 65 though, and especially on a hilly road I wouldn’t recommend it as a daily

Here in GA you need to have, on top of all the customs documents and the Japanese Export certificate, a vehicle inspection by a police officer, a notarized translation form someone fluent in Japanese, and a title application. Nice man! I agree, the manual beats out the auto, especially here in the US where highway speeds are usually 70+mph. I will say, however, that the auto transmissions on these kei cars are surprisingly smooth. I actually have 2 Suzuki Jimny's and I enjoy driving the auto over the manual due to how smooth it feels especially once boost kicks in. The manual has a higher top speed for sure though.

If you need some work on the engine or even a simple oil change, would American mechanics be able to do it, or do you take it to a Japanese specialty mechanic?
@deldodrives
@deldodrives 4 года назад
These cars are actually pretty simple and easy to work on so I've been able to do all of my own maintenance and engine work with no issue, SO FAR. With a bit of cross referencing and somewhat successful use of google translate, you can find all kinds of resources on most kei cars. I'm actually putting together a master list of US equivalent parts I've personally used on all my kei cars and will be putting it up for everyone to use pretty soon. This way it's easier for others who are interested in jumping into the kei wagon to do so as worry free as possible. As for getting a shop to do the work, these cars are so easy to work on that any shop should be able to figure out how to fix them. I'd stick with shops that are versed in Japanese cars (Honda, Toyota, etc.) just to be safe. Thanks for watching!

I have a 93 with 36,000 original miles and I love it. A few other things I have noticed: Until you adjust, sitting on the "wrong" side of the car can throw your lane discipline off. If I don't watch myself you can tend to hug the center line. Drivethru's can suck just as much as toll booths, it's a bit easier with the roof off. I really, REALLY need to find a solution to put a coffee cup somewhere. I'm seriously considering installing a kill switch for the speed limiter. It's not that I plan driving that fast, but If I need to in an emergency situation I'd like to know I can get myself out of trouble particularly when I suspect most large vehicles and trucks may not even see me. I'm finding the syncros are a bit weak in 3rd. Sometimes I have trouble finding the gear when shifting fast.
@deldodrives
@deldodrives 4 года назад
36K miles, that's awesome! I agree, driving on the right side of the car throws you off, particularly after being out on the road for so long and exhaustion starts messing with your senses. It's not that it felt weird or anything, just your instincts are kind of fighting you. I haven't done a drive thru yet but I'm sure it has to be quite the feat, lol. I'll try your suggestion out and remove the roof next time. My "fix" for the cup holder situation was to get a pair of window cup holders, like these: www.amazon.com/dp/B009IKAARQ/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_U_E-lmEb21JPPJ0 I use them on the passenger side window instead of the driver's side so I don't have anything interfering with my steering wheel and since the car is so narrow, I can easily reach out and grab it from my side. Not a great fix, but the best I've been able to find without actually modifying anything on the actual car. I've see a few folks who drill cup holders onto the dash and stuff but I personally didn't want to physically modify the car. The speed limiter removal is a common modification from what I've heard, particularly in the UK. It might be worth looking into on some forums and you do have a good point with having to be able to evade in an emergency. I hadn't thought of that and it's definitely something worth considering. I personally haven't had any issues with the syncros on mine but have read about them being pretty notchy, particularly the 2nd and 3rd gear. I read about how the issue was with the viscosity of the gearbox fluid used and many owners, after changing it out, don't run into issues. I'm not 100% sure on this since I haven't had any issues with mine but it's worth checking out if you haven't changed out your gearbox fluid. Thanks for the thoughts and hope you enjoy your Cappuccino for many more years to come!
