it doesnt have to be, its just that the queer community feels happier with this version. or honestly anyone whos crush's name isnt drew, so it makes it more relatable for them. also because saying "you" instead of "he" leaves gender ambiguity.
Taylor isn't homophobic, it was a hella insult back when she first came out onto the scene for her music career. So saying someone was "gay" was a bad insult to a guy. Though the original definition of gay is happy but it's not like that anymore.
i don't think taylor is homophobic obviously but gay being used as an insult is a pretty homophobic thing, no matter the intentions lol i'm not trying to cancel her or even suggest she held homophobic views at the time, it's just something that was so normalized but was incredibly harmful. i'm very glad she removed it from the actual lyrics
Thats such a stretch. It was an insult because being gay was bad. It’s a homophobic insult. We hold people accountable, we let them live, and they learn. She is not homophobic anymore clearly but you cannot be stretching to the heavens to defend your fav when she was 16 in 06 from being homophobic. Get real
I like the line here: "I been back a couple since then, I didn't look you up, 'cause some trains you can't catch again, you gotta leave it as it was." better than leaving him a letter. It makes it more of a complete story, just her looking back, admitting it's over, than her getting back in touch with him. Also more realistic and mature.
