I agree with everything Talea and Galen have to say. The Teen retreat is my favorite week every year. I'm on the core team and my teenager went for 3 years and loved it, too.
I appreciate that these lovely folks are willing to share their experience. BUT how do these people afford this? Independently wealthy? This is just so "head in the clouds". Maybe getting into the real world would be more useful?
Taboo subject but if you're middle class in America, you'd be surprised at how much you can cut down your expenses - imagine how much money you'd save if all you did was meditate all day with nowhere to go to spend money. If you don't have to be close to a job, or your family - there are parts of this country where you could house yourself practically for free.
I think such a long retreat would make you a very authentic person. They both seem to have benefited from it. But I do wonder how do people manage financially for four years without working. I think you would have to be quite wealthy to do this And how easy would it be to get back into every day life after such a long time. Would the noise of things like traffic and voices get to you. Very interesting.
One of my favourite teachers. He's so clear, heartfelt, and practical. He teaches in a way that doesn't isolate anyone yet clearly honours his tradition in a non dogmatic way. Thank you Ajahn Sucitto!
