Can blender be used for membrane form finding and patterning process? Few years ago I used a specialist piece of software that did the job fine, but it was so expensive!

Form finding, yes, patterning I'm note sure. The capability is there but probably not out of the box. That could make for a great custom add on though.

Sounds like a pretty complex analysis with plenty of non-linear behaviour...nice. So, yes, I believe you can accomplish such an analysis with OpenSees. The challenge will be validating your results - if you're implementing a novel or complex analysis in OpenSees, the scope for making errors with how you implement the libraries methods is quite big! My advise is to start by solving a much simpler problem (perhaps even one you have a known solution for) and then build up the complexity incrementally from there. Hope that helps - good luck!!

when setting up the x y coordinates for your node does it matter where your origin point is or is it more important to be consistent with your origin point?
@DrSeanCarroll
@DrSeanCarroll 6 месяцев назад
Hey, it doesn't really matter where the origin point is, the only thing that matters is the nodal positions relative to one another. The model can be positioned with one of of its nodes at [0,0] or the whole model can be offset by any distance from [0,0]. I won't influence the analysis.

Amazing explanation! Can we analyze a tetrahedron element with OpenSees? I was just wondering, is OpenSees capable of handling analysis like other professional software? Let's say ATENA or Abaqus, for example.
@DrSeanCarroll
@DrSeanCarroll 7 месяцев назад
The big difference between OpenSees and more commercial software is it's lack of a GUI - I wouldn't say it's a direct competitor to something like Abaqus. But if you like scripting your own analyses anyway, it's super helpful.

@@DrSeanCarroll I currently works on my master's tesis and I want to use opensees for my models. I need abaqus-like features from opensees. Can we use Salome or GMSH as a mesh generator, opensees as a solver and Paraview as post processing to visualize the result? It would be amazing if this works since all software that I mentioned is an open source software.

@DrSeanCarroll

Hey - the DSM is material agnostic in that it will give the force distribution for a structure regardless of the Young's modulus used in the calculation. The value of Young's modulus will obviously influence the magnitude of the deflections though.

I am trying to do analyze a cantilever truss where one node is fixed in X,Y, and Z and a node on the other end has a force acting on it in X,Y, and Z. It is saying "looks like not enough restraints provided", why is this the case?
@austinpayne9801
@austinpayne9801 9 месяцев назад
And if i fix more nodes on the end "face", then it says "there was a problem calculating displacements". Really only one node should be fixed for the scenario i am modeling. It is basically a cantilever truss with one node fixed to a ball shaft and the other end has one node with a rope attached to it pulling in X,Y,Z away from the truss.
@DrSeanCarroll

Difficult to say without investigating the model in detail I'm afraid. You can see how the solver was build here... www.degreetutors.com/3d-truss-analysis-using-the-direct-stiffness-method/ or read a tutorial article about it here... www.degreetutors.com/direct-stiffness-method/ A number of additional 'error checking' constraints were implemented to build this into a browser-based tool. It could be that some of these checks are overzealous in restricting your model or it could be a problem with the model definition. Like I said, difficult to dig deeper in the RU-vid comments 🤔
