Well here in Alaska, coal puts out 5 times more heat than wood, and when its -65f outside, it is quite useful. We have a very rural population, and no one here considers Anchorage (or Jueno) to be real Alaska, real Alaskans don't rely on city electricity, and here the state encourages you to be off-grid. Is it dirty? Yes. Is it free? Yes, its everyehere here. Free heat helps locals afford groceries. Also its dark 6 months out of the year, so solar does not work in winter. Personally I believe once carbon graphite batteries are combined with graphine technology, it will make energy storage for heat and electricity a lot easier, and Coal won't be needed anymore. Oh I almost forgot, on the coal furnace you can put thermal couplings and power your house and water supplies too. Obviously you can do this with wood too, but wood doesn't burn as long, and it doesn't work out nearly as much heat, which is a serious issue at the height of winter when you got over 100 inches of snow on the gound and its -80f with the wind chill. Just food for thought.
