Michael Manring is one of those rare geniuses that pop up once in a many decades…. He is one of the great musicians that re-shaped the bass landscape forever. Like Jaco. I love his work. Absolutely original and very varied.
incredible! I recently purchased fretless bass just to play it with ebow, specifically for this singing-like sound. But then I liked it with a usual bow, too) Thanks for the video, I'll have to expose myself to more music of this gentleman
It sucks that Michael's fanbase consists mostly of us bass nerds. This guy has made some of the most interesting music I've ever heard and he hardly gets any notoriety outside of a few circles. A real shame.
Just watching him tune is like a lesson in mindfulness.

Man this is awesome, if only the audio were better. Seeing him play Bad Hair Day on film is rare.. I dont know if you know this, but he told the backstory of this song when I was at his Master Class.. When he was recording Thonk, a studio staffer was standing over him and the gum in his mouth fell out and into Michael's long hair!.. They tried in vain to pull it out and they had to cut a chunk of his hair out! Hence, it inspired him to create this song! lol
As a bridge lover, I hate to see this, but I understand it has to be done. Did they leave the bridge pillars in place, or have they been demolished as well?
Respect. I love musicians that aren't afraid to push the boundaries of the instrument they play. Michael Manring is a master bassist...you can tell he is 100% confident in every note and noise that he creates through the bass. I love his style and his approach. That ebow is awesome!
He's always around. Touring a lot and playing with other musicians. He should join a band or something, guys like him are rare. He's a very nice guy too. Met him in Pasadena a month ago.
It is generally hard for me to have favorites due to there being so many amazing bass players. However, Michael Manring is definitely my personal favorite, and has been for a number of years now. All of his work is very inspirational. Furthermore, I also really enjoy the length and variety of his solos whenever I happen to find a new video of him. You have a fine collection of footage here, Brian!
