Welcome! My name is Milena. On this channel I will be posting DIY and Hamster Care videos. I post every two weeks.
I made this channel because I adore my hamster Nosey and I wanted to share him with the world. Because there is so much misinformation about hamster care I decided to talk about things that could be useful to hamster owners to give better care to their hamsters. I DIY a lot for Nosey considering hamster supplies are pricey and tough to find so I hope some of those will be useful to you as well.
However, I am not a scientist, just a hamster owner and enthusiast. I am also not a vet so if your hamster is having health problems please take them to an exotic vet.
Amazing Video, I've bought Chipsi Bedding since I live in Germany but the only problem I have is that it doesnt make it possible for my teddy to build tunnels and it collabses on him. I have pressed it as hard as I could when rearranging his enclosure but he just digs it up and now it's just piles of bedding. Any suggestions or ideas :)?
In that case you can use layers of soft hay between layers of bedding. The hay will make everything more stable but put your platforms in first because they are hard to add later because of the hay. And of course compress every layer you put, it's important not to compress only at the end. Make sure the hay is nice and soft. Usually the good hay will be more green, not yellowish or brownish and there will be more leaves of hay. Bad hay is too sharp and has mostly the hard stalks.
I see so many say you should give them time. I vehemently disagree, and no one will convince me otherwise. Most hamsters only live for about a year and a half so one thing you do not have an abundance of is time. This is only my second hamster. My first hamster. Hamdini, died on August 28th, she was a sweet soul. My family got me another hamster that night, I named him Janet. He did not want to be held. Initially, I did the whole 'don't force it' thing, then I came to my senses and decided I was picking him up whether he wanted me to or not. Trust me, if I had not done that, he'd still not be allowing me to hold him. It is in no way a good idea to wait and wait and wait when you're gonna have very little time with the hamster as it is. Oh, and by the way...to those who say 'you shouldn't have done that'...'he'll never be comfortable'....it took literal SECONDS from the time I picked him up for him to warm up to me.
Wow, really cool! Never knew North America had that problem. I'll watch ut for that next time I need to buy any. Had/have hamsters many years currently I have a djun 3 years and a robo 4 years old. My personal favourite though is wood wool. It is by far the best for tunnels - ever. Just make sure you don't buy waxed or coloured wood whool! It has to be all natural. I can testify that the hamster does not cut themself on it. Though for bedding definitely put some hey, cotton, paper towel or what ever does work for you and your hamster somewhere between the layers. Your hamster can even make vertical tunnels with wood wool. Never had skin irritation, or dull fur at any time. So, considering your video, I guess I got the right tree by chance. I'll definitely check when I have to buy more. Oh, and wood wool is also very affordable, doesn't rot quickly and you can get large amounts for relatively cheap prices. Only problem is getting the needed volume or having a place to store the extra. I always end up with too much. Again, loved the video! have an awesome week!
Wow! I've never heard of anyone ever using wood wool as bedding before! 🤯🤯🤯 I never thought of that. I'll definitely have to research it! Is it soft to touch? I've never actually touched some since it's not widely used here. It could give more options to people and it might be made from different types of safe woods. Thank you for this great idea! Is it comonly used for hamsters in your country? About cotton. There have been cases of it wrapping around hamsters' toes and teeth. In some cases, it cut the circulation in the toes so the hamsters lost the toes. 😢 I always use paper towels or toilet paper for their nest
@@MyCuteHamster00 Hey. Well I bought basically natural cotton... all natural always. It's for filling pillow or plush normally. Sometimes there is a piece of the cotton tree in it. xD I have used that now for... at least two years and never had any problem. It doesn't even harm the cheekpouches. I think it really depends which one you buy. I remember the old days where you had the... synthetic pink "cotton" looked like candyfloss. That definitely had those problems. Horrible stuff @.@ Anyways, I sadly have to find another person who uses it. I'm always amazed no one does. It all came to be as I had Gebrils. I had leftovers in a gift basket. They chew A LOT, but also like tunnels. So, I gave it to them and they went bonkers over it. Healthwise, they had no problem either. And considering my hamsters have it since 4 years and I see no health problems it at least works with the wood wool I bought. They do need a day or two to figure it out though. To the softness... hmm hard to say. It is "harder" as it's a long string and not cut to shreds. Depending on what substrate you normally have its same thickness or thicker. (just take a dry stick from the woods and a pocketknife and make some long string then you get a feeling for it or wait till easter). It also feels harder cause it spirals into each other. It's basically like a metal sponge for dishes in that regard (the reason why it holds the tunnels). For a hamster you definitely need to pull it a apart a bit as its really compact when sent to you. The boxes are still huge but super light its a bit irritating the first time. The wood wool expands with time and loosens up. Not to mention it's thin enough for the hamster to chew though easily. I think in the start it also draws some moisture from the air (never gets wet though). So that makes it also softer. But as its more of a string it's not "soft" to the touch of the hand (kinda bouncy-feeling though). That's the reason why I play sandwich. I normally put down a layer of sand, then some hay/cotten - then wool - hey/cotten again- and top of to max with wool. Considering your enclosure... I'd use some wood panel floor above the area cause otherwise walking will be a pain for the little guy. The wool is not level after all and has many airpockets, he'll sink in if its the top layer. If you don't like a blank wood floor top that off with your current substrate. I basically have two cages stacked one is full to the brim with wood wool the other has the wheel so on. For mine (more high stacked) I buy around 5-10 kg of wood wool and it lasts a long time. If you're unsure, yet want to test it maybe just buy 1kg or less. Take one corner at the glass front put it in and see if your hamster likes it (you can even try out different densities). If for any reason your hamster doesn't manage it or shows any discomfort just take it out. Every hamster is different but so far I had 3 hamsters and 3 gebrils and none of them had any problems. Truly watch out for the colours and the wax though. They will CHEW it. It be bad for them to eat it, if i's coated in any way. Also a pro, it smells good.^^ Lastly, if you like the fluffy feeling for your hands. Since a to soft floor is also bad for hamster hips. Hmasters run on the ground which is hard after all. I think you need to pull it apart as much as possible and mix it with everything else you have it also will stabilse the constructions a lot that way. I just came to realise that anything tiny enough that can fall through, does so eventually. So, I rather used hay and cotton for in between. In general, as much as I like forums. I think first hands experience is the best. Just use a hand full and watch what happens. Me for example I had a hamster die from toilet paper cause it stuff it's cheek too full with it................. yeah, still no clue how.... It was shredded like always. Only happened once in all my hamster years. Sometimes you have bad luck. With the cotton I think it depends on how it's structured. The natural one I buy is basically short stringed and only washed/dried. So, mine never could create a sling trap with it (or never has). And as along as its not densed or drilled you don't end up with anything the hamster can't simply rip apart. it takes next to no strength. All of this is of course only based on my experiences and those may differ from others. If I ever had any material that a hamster couldn't deal with I simply swapped it out. If you want to pn me a mail or something I could send you a foto of the tunnels in private. Just don't post such information under your video pls. you'll get spammed or worse.^^ Best wishes!
I love your videos! your hamsters are well taken care of! What kind of glue is safe to use for these types of DIYs? Especially in case a hamster likes to chew?
This video helped me so much. I went into my room yesterday and my room was like 80° and I went and her cage and I felt her and she was ice cold and not moving when we touched her so we put her in the freezer so her body could stay for bury her and I was seeing so many hamster videos about people burying their hamsters alive so I thought I killed her❤😭
I'm sorry for your loss. 😔 Yeah if it was 80 and she had food then it definitely wasn't torpor. These video's just make people feel even worse at an already difficult time.
It’s very interesting, my hammy makes a bit of a screeching sound. It isn’t a pleasant sound and makes me sad when I hear it. Sometimes it happens when she is sleeping so I can only assume she just woke up or had a bad dream and wasn’t pleased because I know to stay away when she’s asleep
Where did you get your toys? I cannot find any good ones on Amazon. Also, where do you put your fluff ball when cleaning a cage? At the moment I have a medium sized cardboard box which I don’t think is ideal
@@rufusjames7671 Some of them I bought in my local pet shop and sometimes I make my own. I usually put her in the playpen under her cage so she can keep busy exploring and picking up food I sprinkle around. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Elk9GEw3fYE.html
marvelous set up ..this hi-lights how much bedding and enrichment can be provided for our hamsters in an enclosure of great size , small pet shop cages are really hamster prisons and should be banned , shops should be made by law to sell cages of recommended sizes . all hamsters deserve a wonderful life and a home that's amazing as this one .
sometimes when i stick my hand in to my hamsters cage, he runs away.... But my hamster can snatch food from my hand.. My hamster(roborovski dwarf) is round
I guess I got lucky, I handled my Syrian from day one when I got her from the pet shop, she doesn't hide from me or bite me at all, she snatched a blue berry from my fingers and spent a lot of time crawling up and down my torso and around my bed. She does get startled still occasionally so I guess it's still a process. She has a fairly small cage so I let her spend as much time as possible outside of the cage and she gets nice treats afterwards and hasn't showed signs of stress or lethargy
@@R1R1S_R0BL0X How long ago did you get them? In the first few days it is common for hamsters not to take the food that is offered. They have cheek pouches where they usually keep some food at all times. In the first few days they might be scared of their new environment so they will eat the food that is already in their cheek pouches. Once they run out they start taking the food you give them, especially when you are out or sleeping. If you've had your hamster for a while and they've suddenly stopped eating then there is a health issue or teeth problems and they need to see a vet.
Boys are more behaving but females arent, i used to have a hamster that is the same breed as urs that is a boy and he died afew months ago and i got a new female hamster of the same breed again and the female is way more aggressive
@@Fonset__e I am sorry to hear that. It is definitely worth trying. However I would check if they are still alive first by looking for the signs I explain in the video. The best way to check is to see if there is blood pooling inside their nail beds. I really hope they are still alive. Let me know what happens and feel free to ask any questions.
Thank you for helping me I thought my hamster is gonna not be fine but luckily you told me because I was worried for hours because I buy the hamster yesterday.
I bought my hamster 8 days ago and she hasn’t drunk anything she has a bottle and a bowl the bottles working she’s not showing any signs of sickness and the watter level hasn’t gone down by the morning and iv tried putting honey on the nodel what do I do
@@TillyDudley-n2z She is probably drinking small amounts but you can offer water in a small dish, like a shallow tealight, as well. You can give her small pieces of cucumber since they contain lots of water. Don't put big pieces because they can get moldy if she hides them.
Nice video, that cage looks great, but must be a nightmare to clean out 😁😁 I had 2 when i was a kid, Humphrey and Honey, Humphrey I let run loose in the living room and he enjoyed ripping up the carpet with his teeth much to my mother's horror, once he got lost behind our fireplace and i had to tempt him out with some food. I only ever got bitten once and that was because i was trying to wake him up by poking my finger into his house 😁😁😁
Beautiful enclosure! I just got a 75 gallon tank and am starting to get stuff to hopefully get a Syrian hamster and this is exactly what I’m planning to achieve for its cage. Love your vids :)
I have a way smaller cage than yours.. i wish i had a bigger one but my parents dont let me get a bigger one, besides my room is to small… i wish i could apologize to my hamster :(
Don’t be so hard on yourself!! The minimum amount for a cage is 450 sq feet even though I think that’s a little small that’s what professionals say. I would say try to shoot for 700-800 sq feet but it’s better than nothing! I’m sure you’re doing great!!
i always cry because how my hamster hates me. idk what i did wrong honestly he js keeps biting me and doesn’t like me. i have a very large cage enough bedding and even a playpen i have gave him the best life idk what to do though
It's best not to push them into being handled. Give them some space so they can feel free around you. Of course, sometimes it does happen that a hamster will really hate being touched but most of the time they just need to feel safer and not forced into being handled. Just take it slow 😊
@@MariliaKan If they hide all the time and rarely come out then you have a ghost hamster. Ghost hamsters prefer to stay in their burrows most of the time and are rarely seen outside so it's really hard to tame them. It can be a bit depressing because it can feel like having an empty cage.
I have the pale bugs you showed in the video, the booklice, are those from the food? I cleaned all the items and moved around all the bedding to search for wet or mouldy spots but didn’t find any
The could have come from food, bedding or some place in your house. They usually eat tiny particles of mold that we can't even see but the also like grain. Check your kitchen too, your floors, areas behind furniture, carpets, etc. Can you see them in hamster food?
Yeah, that would make it much harder. Some hams will not pay too much attention to food if they feel unsafe. That's why making them feel safe and not chasing them is important. Once they relax and feel more confident in their new home they will be more likely to take food. You would just neet to be patient because with a hamster like this taming will take longer.
My hamsters love my mom, when she comes to the room and my hamsters are up they come running over to greet her and its genuinely so cute how excited and happy they look lol
You sound like an out of tune robot. It's very annoying when you tell something and you have a very weird intonation. Just listen to the regular American.. they all seem to have highpitched sentences where they make everything sounds like a question as if their lives depend on it. Ugh..!
