It's interesting, as someone who just got back into playing in beginner leagues in my 30's, having a longer stick feels great on defense to jab the puck away from players, especially seeing as how light even a full-length stick is these days. I have a few higher end sticks I bought used recently that have been cut down 4 inches and I see why people would want a shorter, even lighter stick for offense. They feel awesome for puck handling and quick wrist shots, which are my favorite shot. I think my skill just isn't at a high enough level yet to really appreciate the shorter sticks relative to full-length for now, but I'll keep playing with both until I get better with the shorter sticks.

As a coach, when I heard, “What time is practice over?” Or “Can I get water?”, I know I’ve let boredom set in and I should have changed what we were doing sooner. Also, I’ve followed the USA hockey “have a plan” approach for years. Fact of the matter is that I never fully get through my plan. This is the opposite of what Brian was saying happened to him - I think i heard he executed all his stuff super fast then had 40 minutes of slack time to fill. To my mind, I’d rather have MORE planned in a theme that I’m teaching a team and then do LESS. Perhaps I’m in left field. I guess your mileage may vary. Open to others’ thoughts…

I get what he is saying but you see give and go's setup from there all the time. First example comes to mind, USA vs Canada Olympics Crosby winning goal. Good video, good perspective.

Something to be considered that never is much is your ape index. I’m 5’8” but a +4 ape index, meaning my arms are the length of your average 6ft male. That means my stick is going to be shorter than usual, and def different from others my height who may have longer legs, shorter arms, etc. But it’s not hard to imagine how much of an effect your ape index has on this.

I don't think the demo by the coach was very good. He showed them the drill a single time and then threw them in the drill. A second demo with questions to detect understanding would have elicited better detecting of CI sooner. I believe.

Birchy is Proving to be a excellent Coach. Loved watching her play for Brampton and the times she was with Team Canada. In fact the lass was never given a proper run with the NWT. She was in then she was out, in and out ....just never given a proper chance. I think also she is a future NWT coach [ assistant at the moment ] Courtney is a class act in every way. This was a superb interview. A very Erudite lady indeed. fiery nature😂😂 and would never back down as a player and always had her team mates backs, but a lovely human, very warm individual . Good luck Birchy. [ even though it is Kessel now.. I still remember her as Birchard and that has stuck 😂]

very interesting. bottom line it is a simple physics equation. the closer the weight of the puck is to the body's center of gravity the more force production you have. which is why your best shooters pull the puck in on a wrist shot. which is also the preferred location on a one timer. still a tough thing to put your finger on though due to the varying lengths of humorous bones from person to person.

The mini rinks or 3/4 boutique rinks are becoming very popular here in MN. Our arena has one and it is a fantastic tool. Its perfect for mite games and 3v3 leagues. They might be slightly longer than 1/2 ice but not as wide but the lines are there so you can start teaching offsides and icing if you choose to do that. It's the best of both worlds honestly and I hope more arenas and associations continue to add them. It is exactly the equivalent to the soccer example you guys use. The other thing that I find extremely frustrated is going to our spring AAA, not only do these tournaments play full ice with all the rules, they use full sized nets with 3.5' goalies! like seriously why not use an appropriately sized goal?

I wonder how much of the propensity to want the puck or be willing to make mistakes or be coachable is actually genetics or nature, like you are born with it as mentioned or if it is actual nurture and is the results of the environment they were born into and exposed to at a very early age.

For young player development u7-u11, based on constant growth in this age group is it better for a shorter budget friendly stick more often (possibly wood) or a higher priced stick to last longer?
@TomP.-bz5um
@TomP.-bz5um 8 месяцев назад
Right now I have u7/9’s using premium sticks that are above the nose and struggling to have a factual conversation with parents if it is better to replace the stick more often instead of higher priced sticks
@sobertrades4746
@sobertrades4746 6 месяцев назад
@@TomP.-bz5um I see no one has responded to you. But in my personal opinion. I'd say it's best for kids development to have proper length stick. Rather then keeping a kids stick longer then it should be to let them grow into it and try get more seasons out of it. Try find affordable sticks maybe even used ones. There's also government funding for low budget families for kids in sports not sure if that could be an option. I have a son in U9 and a son in U7 currently. I'm one of the coaches too. 🏒🤘
