Follow Ultra Runners Jeff Winchester and Jeremy Reynolds on their quest to meet other runners, test their mental and physical limits, and reach the height of their running potential. It's time to Go Be Awesome!
Casey and Chase are amazing! The communities are incredibly supportive of the race. It is impossible to get lost. My favorite part was after finishing everybody would: get up, go outside, and cheer on each runner as they came into the finish area. Don't under estimate the flatness. One runner said "I have done The Triple Crown, but I have been in more pain in 20 miles of this race than any of them!" He did not finish.
You guys are awesome, I listen to you every week on my drive to work. This year I ran my first 50km ultra in New Zealand. I now have the ultra running bug and enjoy hearing about all the races around the world. Be very cold if you covered a race in New Zealand,
Great Spotlight!! I'd love to see a spotlight on the Summit 200 mile in Colorado, currently running its inaugural race! The whole race is run above 9,300 feet!
Just did a quick check! These RDs are great. We recently had a spotlight of one of their other races, the Cowboy 200. Casey and Chase Hammond are solid and will put on an awesome race.
Love the SSTR! Moved to Ancaster in 2020, have been running these trails since and have done the 20k the past two years. Planning on doing the 50k next year :). So happy to hear you guys covering it!
I ran the 20k, it was my first trail race. I had a blast! It definitely converted me to trail racing. I can't wait for next year!! See you at the finnish line!! 💪😎👍
This race is absolutely fantastic! I ran the 100 mile option for my first ever 100 and it was a beautiful experience. Love the RDs too! Top tier people right there!
This podcast is phenomenal and I am so glad I found it. Pretty sure I binged every race spotlight episode this past week. Love how much passion comes out of the race directors when they get to talk about their events. Keep up the great work Jeff & Jeremy! 👊
Thank you! Glad you have enjoyed the spotlights! Did you happen to find a race from the spotlights that you want to add to your list to participate in?
@@TheUltraRunningGuys oh absolutely! Cocodona 250 is definitely a bucket list race for me. Also Umstead & Blackbeard's both sound like great events over here in NC
Alabama boy here. This makes me want to do this race. Becky seems like a real gem, for sure and you can tell she loves what she does and really loves the racers. 👍
Love this race and these RD’s put on a great event. If you are 200 curious definitely check this one out! I finished in 2023 and will be there in 2024 as a volunteer.
Hey! That’s awesome! It sounds like a great race to us as well. The pavement pounding will be a lot after a while, but that’s manageable and if you do a lot of training on roads then it will be less comparatively. The RD is great and the race sounds like it is organized well. Should be a good time to get that second buckle!
Can’t wait until it’s released! Congratulations Ed!! Request: Could you also have Adrien Cooper aka MountTinMan on your podcast? He was the winner and is the record holder for the LMS at Southern Tour Ultra. Thanks!!!!
hey! This episode was released a few weeks ago. We just realized we had not published this teaser on RU-vid. The episode with Ed is fantastic. And, yeah we agree, Adrien Cooper is a machine. Thanks for recommending!
I registered for this year’s 50 mile distance after moving to GA from Charlottesville, VA last year. I used to run the Blue Ridge Mountains in VA and I can say, in my experience, the north GA mountains are tough. GA doesn’t believe in switchbacks!😅 I ran the Coosa Backcountry portion of the course already and have run on sections of the AT and Benton Mackaye trails here - challenging runs that certainly make you work!
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed the interview as well. We had a blast getting to know Keira and hearing about the Leona Divide 100k. You are going to have a great time. Enjoy it and can't wait to hear how the race goes for you.
Excellent, thank you for featuring Umstead100. My 1st and keep coming back for more every year!! Excellent conversation, questions, and shared information.
Thank you! We love Umstead 100 as well. Was also our first! Looking forward to seeing everyone out there again this year. Neither of us are running it, but both are making plans to pace / volunteer.
Thank the ultra gods I don't have to run the sawmill truck section! I just signed up for the 50 miler with only 15 spots left. Your podcast was nicely put together and it was great when it went off=script - I get you need to keep the to your own aid-station cutoffs, but the follow-up questions and answers were very helpful. Kudos to Keira for showing her passion for the race and everything involved in putting on a race like this. Now I know what to expect and train for coming out of flatter NE.
Thank you so much for this comment! You are right, for these race spotlights we try to stick to somewhat of a script, which is completely different than our approach on our main show. BUT, when something comes up that we feel needs to dig in like that, we move into it. Definitely appreciate you mentioning it and grateful that the episode brought value for you. And yes, Keira is awesome. You are going to have a great time at the race!
That's awesome!! Glad to hear. Let us know how it goes. Excited for you to run your first 100 at the Beast of the East. Just awesome to hear about runners taking their next step along the ultra running journey!
Wait, what? There was a deer in 2022 also? The time we were referring to was back in 2016 when Jeremy’s wife hit one while driving between crew stops. That’s crazy if it happened again to someone! Wow!
That’s awesome! Definitely want to hear about your experience. This is Jeff, I am not going to be out there like I hoped. But I think you will enjoy the difference. Have a blast!
Beast of the East was my first 100 that I did back in 2021. Its an amazing course! Very good aid stations and photography like Richard said. I wanted to do a mountain race and being from the midwest (Michigan) it was nice finding a race that checked the boxes without needing to deal with the altitude of a mountain race out west for my first one. Definitely worth checking out!
Just finished this episode on Spotify and absolutely loved hearing the stories. Makes me wish I was younger and could do stuff like this. Owen is a true inspiration and hope to run a race that he is in. Now what can I accomplish at 41 years young 🎉
Hey Jeff and Jeremy!! Love your podcast! I listen to it practically daily on Spotify and most days 2-4 episodes. Been dreaming of doing an ultra for years and finally started training and have my eyes on a last man standing for my first one in April 2024. Thank you for covering this race! I did not realize it was so close to where I grew up and that it finishes on top of the mountain I spent a lot of time on as a kid. Now I am eyeing this race for 2025. Love love love your show so please never stop, getting close to finishing all your episodes 💪. Thanks again, Kevin from Kansas City Missouri. Your Hydra race you host sounds really fun too. 🎉
Kevin! Man thank you so much for this feedback. That means a ton to us. Hopefully you can go check out the race sometime since it is so close. Good luck at your first last man standing. Which one is it? Thanks again for the feedback it helps inspire us to keep pressing. We love it and are grateful for all the people we have been able to meet over the past couple of years.
@@TheUltraRunningGuys the race is Eternal Damnation out of Wichita, KS. Haven't signed up just yet as I have to coordinate my life too 😂. But you know how that works. It's on 4/20 and that's the same birthday as one of my six kids but I think we will be able to figure it out. Just did a half marathon (solo on a whim this morning) and finished it though I was majorly dehydrated at the end. Went out for a 4 mile run 🙄. Oh I also started using Strava this month because you guys kept talking about it like every podcast. I found you guys on Spotify like less than a month ago just searching ultra running and been hooked.
@@KevinHolden-oi1kn haha! I love it. Saw your Strava run and yeah...you need to hydrate!! Feel free to reach out to us at anytime. Looking forward to seeing how you love Eternal Damnation... that just sounds bad for me to say. haha!
Hey guys! I totally appreciate this podcast/video as I’m about to help pace my lifelong running partner for this race. It’s going to be her first 100 race so hearing all of these logistics from the race was so helpful! Any tips for a first time pacer??? See ya at the race!
That’s awesome! So glad to hear that you found the info helpful! The race sounds like it is going to be epic. Lots of advice that can be thrown out at you, but start with making sure you keep your runner eating and hydrating consistently! They are going to not want to at some point. But always keep in mind… “low mood, eat food”. If stomach turns, then slow down and get it under control, it may take being slower than expected but let the stomach calm down.
We can't wait to follow! Good mix of terrain. We know the App Trail is your bread an butter and will be fun to watch you take on the flat and fast and then the hills at the end. Exciting!
For the guest episodes, we release them as teasers on RU-vid to give subscribers and idea of who the guest is. We release the full audio version of the episode as a podcast and can be listened to on any of the podcast platforms that you listen through. For videos of episodes, we do release full video versions of our Race Spotlights.
Temp changes can definitely be tough! Keep your core warm, it is better to drop layers than not have them with you. Tuck the extra layer in your pack so you don't get caught being too cold between aid stations. That's always the challenge, having it with you between the aid stations where our minds start making us question our sanity. Get warm and get the mind back into the game and you will do great!
@@TheUltraRunningGuys do you have a recommendation for a lightweight but warm jacket that I could carry in my pack? Oh has to be vegan also so no puffers with animal feathers.
@@barbaraneel7256lot of good options out there. Biggest thing to think of though is in terms of layers. To give you flexibility to vary it up depending on your own body heat and weather. Don’t lock into one item as it could make you too hot or not warm enough.
This will be my first attempt at a 50. Probably won’t be staying out for the hundo but looking forward to the challenge! Thanks for highlighting this event!!
You never know! You may get to the 50 mile mark and think...LFG!! Regardless though, congrats on this being your first 50 miler. Enjoy the ride. The ups and downs. Enjoy it all. Nothing like it.
I've been there twice and dropped at 50 both times. THIS IS THE YEAR! lol It's a really great race and a lot of fun. Truthfully, the colder the better and last year we had some snow to deal with, but I wasn't sweating at all. I disagree with the no light needed comment. It's pitch black at night. It's a small town, so plan on having to travel about 30 minutes for hotels.
This is your year! Just blow right through that mid point and don't look back! And thank you for the feedback about your experience. This is exactly why we are starting to produce this kind of content. You are helping other runners that will watch this video and also read through the comments. So, thank you for taking the time to leave the note. And go crush the TH 100!
@@TheUltraRunningGuys I did blow by it last year and made it back to the aid station for the last leg, but I was wobbling so badly I was afraid to go on!
You know what is amazing? This many years later, all of the things that Tom says about the Southern Tour Ultra and Ultrarunners doing whatever it takes to finish still ring true. Such an amazing event and inspirational group of people. LOVE this podcast with Tom!
Do you have a son named Leo ? If you do does he go to PCA if he does is his teacher miss Ginn in second grade If his then tell him I’m Demari he should know me but if he doesn’t tel him I am in his class bye
SOO many quotable quotes in this podcast and Andy's other podcast you did with him. "Every day you are able to go do what you love, you should be smiling about it," and "Luck is the last dying wish of the unprepared." WOW... I scribbled those down to save them for later. EXCELLENT podcast, guys-- the way you LISTEN before asking questions makes this so conversational vs just a Q&A. This was such a valuable podcast, and as always, so many takeaways! Strong work!!! All the love, all the miles, all the grit, all the light- @runningbooknerd)
Right?!?! Andy is incredible and we had a blast getting to know him. We keep wondering if we should bring him back on for another episode. He has just so much to offer and we felt like we only scratched the surface, despite two episodes with him.
