Good chat, as a collector with over 5000 works I would say one of the biggest issues is not bringing in the new beginning collector who is gun shy of spending over 2000. The other issue is the ultra pretentious art dealer who really is clueless as the pretentious stuff ticks off new collectors entering the market. As for seasoned collectors we tend to buy elsewhere and not even attend the openings of these types of dealers. Leo was high style but not pretentious. A poser maybe but never pretentious. Artie was much like Leo very down to earth but full of knowledge. Some of the new dealers not so much
Very weird statistics guys you came up with.. there are almost 300 galleries if each would sell only 3-4 artworks they would all lose money as the investment in the fair is very high.
Wow, excellent discussion for anyone interested in learning the art market and the strategy for new artists. Magnus is brilliant and always on point with statistical data regarding the revenue generated and obstacles that affect most artists today. On a side note, I always look forward to The Baer Facts podcast as Josh seems to have a relaxed way of interviewing his guests which make them feel comfortable through the process, a truly gifted interviewer in my opinion. Good luck gentlemen and thanks for sharing your experiences in the art market.
Burden was explicit that photographs of his performances were merely symbolic of the event. A digital token of a sculpture is less than a symbol... Its a collectable coin.
It was a good talk. My question would have leaned more towards the market pending disruption due to technology and all that follows. Because the sales model will have to evolve 🤔
People can lie, but language cannot. This is also not called fair art, but rather art fair, that is, the echo is not art, but air. And like air it can be anything, from bying a painting for a million scent to a fart, but not art.
I’m an artist, and I’ve been confronted with the question of AI replacing human artist, and the best analogy I’ve given has been the example of the player piano. The player piano can play the best music ever composed, but Stevie Wonder is always going to be better
I was shocked to hear the Louvre has sold the Mona Lisa for any price, let alone 4.2 billion. I googled this every way I could think of, and can't find any mention of this sale. Can you point me to something that documents this? I don't want to believe this is true. It is SO wrong on so many levels. I hope. you respond.
hypothetical to facilitate discussion of trends of museums; extreme hypothetical, but host made his point sfmoma sold a rothko a while back as a less extreme example
Jerry Saltz laments about Hebrew buyers remorse regarding the annihilation of western art. Cant wait until we push past this cultural constipation. These types ruined it for everyone.
